I cried when Aiken and John talked about being a “yes man” cos I totally relate to that. And what John said hits too close to heart - the expectations that because you were there for your friends, you expected them to be there for you. And you end up getting hurt when they weren’t there for you the way you wanted them to be. And that it’s actually our fault to have that expectations. And yes, they might have tried to be there for you in their own ways but you just don’t recognise it. And that hurts to know too. It just make you feel like you’re an unappreciative person. Tough pills to swallow guys 😭 but thanks for the episode, really enjoyed it. Feels like a free therapist trial. 😂

I always looked up on Aiken for being such a genuinely wonderful person. Like, seriously, even if he was a yesman and a people-pleaser (which I am struggling to say no as well) , the way he portrayed himself is something else. I hold my respect towards him at such high regards, but after watching this video, man.... I'm so proud to see him improving and putting himself first now.

I can relate. Saying no was so difficult for me in my younger days too. It stemmed from being overlooked from everything during my school days. Teachers didn’t even know I existed, I was picked last during football games, and I just wanted to be part of things, so I would say yes to everything. Now I just DGAF if it doesn’t align with my values. Good on you Aiken.

Yeah, in workplace setting, if you are a newbie or just 1 year working within the company, you condition yourself to earn brownie points to the higher ups in your dept and in the HRD, even if you have no intention of downright asskiss under them you try hard to always be on their good side, by way of minimizing as much as possible saying "no" to them

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a game-changer for trauma, that's particularly hard for the brain to digest. For those who are curious, read 'the body keeps the score'. I was doing alot of self-help to assimilate my PTSD but only got to therapy after another similar incident and had a breakdown. There is no shame to getting help and if you are able to, (both emotionally-ready and finacially able) please get help. It won't be easy, as your brain and behaviour learns new method of coping but you will come through it like a phoenix revived. Thank you Aiken for sharing so openly, and adding the fact that you had done your own homework and discovered EMDR and got the help you need. Part of healing is the self advocacy and courage to do so.

It's so true. That you will not know the importance of mindfulness until you've been to the state that was out of your control out of a sudden. Often ur actions now links to ur experience in the past that i realised too. Its so true that learning about urself does help in managing ur emotions. Expectations have always been hurting u when it's not met. Regardless how low u set the baseline, it's bound that it might not be able to meet that. Overtime, i forgot about it n unknowingly had expectations again n got hurt once again. #MindOverBody In every negativity there will be positivity n we should shift it there instead of victimising ourselves.

Can relate, my friend, husband and I are people pleasers. But I’ve also matured through therapy. Saw Aiken gyming in Virgin Active Marina One before, he seemed slightly down then, almost wanted to encourage him but too shy. Glad he’s gone for therapy and in a better space now.

Great session! Just a personal feedback that Johnathan could perhaps wait a little before cutting into providing comments right when Aiken is sharing (esp his walk in therapy). And the questions phrased and asked if not processed properly could come across as mocking therapy services…
@syn92582 жыл бұрын
Myself too could relate very hard to that "yes man" part. Used to be a people pleaser for so many years until one day I decided to say "enough is enough" . Guess not only we have to do the right things, doing things right is equally essential to anyone's mental health in some way. And nothing to be ashamed of for being virgin no matter how old one is. Many people treat it like a laughing stock coz sexuality has been portrayed as what Aiken mentioned. Staying virgin doesn't necessary mean it's purely being conservative or religious, there're some other aspects and reasons as well. As much as we don't judge someone who isn't, people who have yet been staying virgin are not supposed to be alienated in any way. This is another great episode of TDK, appreciate Aiken's sharings and TDK's effort along the way delivering such good podcast episodes.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Ideally its supposed to remove the negative emotions and beliefs from the traumatic memory to make it more bearable to live with if it ever resurfaces.

Regarding the question at 26:30: no, the Catholic church never introduced dating sessions for singles. We are given that choice to meet, mingle and date whomever we want. 26:37 there are dating apps for specific religion. I tried the Catholic and Christian ones but there are hardly anyone there.
