I think the curio shop influenced his painting for busy, over stuffed compositions and for theme - politics deeply influenced his work.

The fact that creatures are peeping in right at the very edges of frame seems very indicative of some kind of psychosis or schizophrenia. It's often described this way - strange figures flickering at the edge of vision.

I don't really see the point of a dialogue when we have no clue about his motives. Something happened to him. Either a spiritual trip or onset of schizophrenia....what do we actually know, as opposed to what we guess with no insight.
