Lakey, first i really enjoy the surf and travel content. 1/100 of a point loss at Bells was a killer to watch. Rooting for y'all to make the final 5.

Lakey, thanks for the content. One time I’ll love to see you review a wave of yours at a competition. What you were thinking paddling in, strategy, what you did well/not so well, if you thought you were underscored/overscored etc. Anyway, keep up the great work and best of luck for the Australia leg. P.S Tom won the heat.

its great to read that you have been focused on your objectives and surfing, and thus a reduction in content. sometimes, often in my personal experience, its better to be able to focus without concern or distraction for how others might perceive a situation. Thom is surfing the best i have seen him surf, on that blue railed CI, and if the video was an accurate assessment of the session, then i would say he won that heat, especially with those fierce snaps. its interesting to watch your surfing lakey and see what you are doing and where you might be challenged with maneuvers and board shapes. you are definitely in ripping form. that said, i maintain that i think your boards are too finicky and too small regarding each nuance, and having ridden a board rook 15 very similar to that which you might be riding, i can say it is the most challenging difficult unforgiving board i have ever ridden (and yes, i realize that its also an aspect of extreme nuanced maneuverability for drastic high performance surfing), but is also equally as temperamental to various wave conditions. having ridden boards more akin to tom currens black beauty, at 2&3/4 thick, and much wider, and of course 6'6" :), i can say that that board floated and stayed on the water surface so much better, and thus was less sensitive to how steep or mushy or large or small or peaky or lined up the waves were, and performed on them all. granted, the extent to which my 'aggro' maneuvers were was perhaps an occy (or contemporary caroline marks style) vertical backside snap, and maybe thats why as an 'old man', i like the classic (pre slater (i feel like a broken record, and maybe i am :) pre 90s pre potato chip pre air pre extreme 90s and 00s style) 1980s style surfing. those boards, while maybe 'slower' and less responsive, allowed all those surfers to ride everything, around sections, over sections, into the inside, in the pocket, in the barrel, because they stayed on top of the water, regardless of how much or how much less rocker and overall shapes they had. also, contrary to what brit says, as a tiny 135 to 140lb 5'6" person (150-155 back in the 'power surfing' days) i never felt as though i never had enough strength to maneuver my boards, especially and including that CI 6'6" enough to surf adequately, including floaters, cutbacks, lip smacks, frontside and backside, and pocket snaps into the barrels tom carrol pipe style. i guess i am just an old 'aged out' vintage era guy now, but id rather have 'too much' board that stays on the surface, than a multitude of smaller boards that none of which seemingly actually keep momentum and stay afloat regardless of specific waves. the thicker longer boards for hawaii that you were riding, to me, seemed to be most stable and versatile in my opinion and observation, and seemed to serve you with float, drive, and momentum, while still being maneuverable. but then again, what do i know. probably nothing to very little, admittedly :). in my humble very amateur but experienced surfing every wave i could over a 16 year or so period, from la jolla to ocean beach sf in every possible condition that california can offer, daily, in every season, opinion, it should take no more than 3-4 boards maximum to surf that entire wsl circuit and have them serve you so you are not having to have 'specifics' to have your boards function in a way that you are not struggling or frustrated with responsiveness. how many boards did tom curren have back in the day? and, would the rides he was getting, although perhaps less contemporary explosive and dynamic in maneuvers, compare and score better than the ones you are getting? just a though. an honest one. be good, have fun, keep ripping, keep fit and healthy, and keep well. proud of you for all you do and are doing :) and cheering for you :) you are an impressive inspiration to be a pro on tour and have the career you have. it speaks volumes of your athleticism and commitment :)
