The life and times of a soldier during Operation Iraqi Freedom II (2004-2005)
Being a soldier is more than just combat. A soldier is still a human being and I tried to capture those moments that bring more of a human perspective to a combat tour. Those were the parts I prefer to remember when thinking about those days. This is original video I shot during my tour as an Infantryman in Iraq in 2004-05. We conducted full-spectrum combat operations in Baghdad. We did see combat, but the point of sharing is to show the other times... the human stuff. I was a 23 year old kid in a very dangerous place, but we were still kids. I'm not here to provide commentary about whether my experience was better or worse than others, it just was what it was. Enjoy!
I'm thrilled to see how many people enjoyed my last one. A couple thoughts to address your comments:
1) Yes, I'm still alive and doing well. No, I am not homeless! Everyone depicted in these videos came home and are living today. Most have successful lives, families, and are doing fine. Yes, we have all struggled in our own way with this experience and some more than others in the years that followed. Part of us will always still be there....
2) Yes our unit did lose people in combat. I chose not to share that aspect (or video of them) on this channel out of respect for their families.
3) This video was shot on a Panasonic mini-DV camera. I bought it at a PX in Germany in early 2004. Most phones didn't have cameras back then and KZbin didn't exist. I just wanted to remember my time there. I brought around 8 hours of footage home from the tour and it disappeared into my attic for over a decade. In 2016, I found the tapes and converted them for a computer. They are 100% real and original.
4) If you have judgements or critiques about us (you "keyboard warriors), feel free to comment. Just remember that you're only seeing little snippets packed into 15 minutes out of a whole year of experiences that don't begin to show the whole picture. Based on the comments from the last video, many of you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Remember the time frame here, a lot of things about both Iraq and the Army itself changed in the years that followed. I did a second tour in 2008-2009 and it was a whole different place by then.
5) Those of you who were babies (or not even born) when this happened but still have critiques about our combat posture.... you sound ridiculous. Seriously... especially when you relate this to your video games. Dude.....
6) Please keep your politics to yourself here, wherever you stand on the war. That is not the point of sharing these.
Finally: For the other vets who served, especially during that time, thanks for your service and I hope you're doing well today. Enjoy a little taste of the past!
Best wishes!
JD

"The best bread I ever had in my damn life." "If nothing else here, the bread they make is amazing." This is so relatable, some countries just don't have good bread, it's just something to cram in your mouth hole that keeps you alive, even if you go to specialist bakery the bread isn't good, and then other countries have bread you can buy in the supermarket that tastes like angels massaging your taste buds for some reason. I think it has to do with the particular cultigens of wheat that are dominant within every country's commodity distribution network, some wheat tastes really nice, other wheat is not so nice but grows better on that country's particular type of soil.
@MegaPuggz
@MegaPuggz 2 жыл бұрын
lol, its just how its made and the time and effort that goes into it..
@ReddoFreddo
@ReddoFreddo 2 жыл бұрын
@@MegaPuggz Where your wheat comes from and what particular cultivar it is will be the deciding factor into how your bread tastes. If you put a lot of effort in the bread, you let it rise for a long time, you mill the wheat by hand, etc. That might make the bread taste better, but it won't ensure that the bread will taste good, or even better than a loaf from the super market.
@MegaPuggz
@MegaPuggz 2 жыл бұрын
@@ReddoFreddo yes what wheat you use matters, but more so, the skill of the person making the bread is the difference between authentic bread made by someone making it the way its made in their home country and mass production bread.
@ReddoFreddo
@ReddoFreddo 2 жыл бұрын
@@MegaPuggz Authentic bread can be of poor quality, the most skilled person in the world can't make a decent bread from poor quality wheat (of course a skilled person would want to use high quality wheat) similarly someone who makes his first bread ever, if he follows the instructions right and uses high quality wheat, it will taste really good. Skill matters, it's not the deciding factor. We just disagree on this, but that's OK.

You're a good human being. Thank you for this. I will be sure to show this to my students next school year on Veterans day or really, whenever there's a good chance to fit this in. Videos like these are so important to humanizing conflict and showing a different side to documentaries, battle maps, and such. There's value to those things as well, of course, for education...but I feel something is lost and men in war are reduced to mere plastic soldiers on a map. This shows a real human side to things. It's a shame that old men who are bitter and hateful send young men to go fight and die and hate other young men half way across the world. What you all did saved others from being drafted into such a horrible conflict, so I thank you for your service, because of your willingness, others got the chance to stay home safe and sound.

Seeing the kids makes me sad, knowing once the U.S. withdraws from the middle east, most of these kids will be forced to serve in their military or die really blows. The whole situation sucks. On one hand, when the U.S. military leaves, the civilians are going to be left to a dictator's will, but on the other hand, the longer our troops stay, the more Americans die in an unwinnable war. sucks to see this all unfold.

I was watching a documentary about it and I'm pretty sure the casings were sold for the enemy to melt them down and remake them as bullets or something.

I'm really glad some people spent the time trying to document stuff like this. In a couple decades, people will probably be using videos like this one to understand what life was like for people. Who knows, there might be folk who have to write a paper on you!

My father served this war. KIA in '06. The first cryptologist in 60 years to be killed while serving in the Navy. Thank you to everyone who served in this battle. To those lives lost, thank you for your bravery.

I was attached to 2-37 AR (1AD) up at Taji during OIF II. Probably waved at you guys on patrols in west Baghdad. I'm still currently serving in the National Guard and when I tell my young guys about the days of rolling around with no armor at all, they don't believe me. They can't imagine it. 1:27 is exactly how we rolled too. Thank you for uploading this. These videos are priceless.
