Hi, I am a mama to five kids ages 16-7. I become super overstimulated with visual clutter. I wanted to share this bit of encouragement- I did and do much of what is explained in this video and many days it felt like “wow, this just isn’t sinking in.” Well, it eventually does. My 16 year old now actively notices that he’s overstimulated when the house gets disorderly. Win! And this brings the new season of balancing the needs of little ones (who are mostly oblivious to their mess) and teens (who need things in order).

Hi Kallie, I can’t believe you’ve made it this far and have done such a great job with your kids, and still manage to make us some great KZbin videos. I remember when I was six years old and my mom had four kids and pregnant with our fifth sibling, a beautiful baby boy. He was 8 pounds and 9 ounces so she was “really pregnant”, if that’s even a word, or words. I think you know what I mean. I remember writing to you and telling you how much I love watching your family grow. Also, about me helping my mom hang up clothes. I would bend over into the laundry basket and get a diaper, yes it was the days before pampers. Also she had glass baby bottles that she washed then boiled in a wire basket for sterilization. That was 1966. I’m 64 now and remember it like yesterday, so I have no doubt all of the things she taught us (repetitiously) eventually stuck. And, those are happy memories. So, now, I’m wondering, what are some of the tips you can share with me about how to do things with back pain? Did you suffer from back pain in your third trimester? Thank again for sharing your beautiful babies and family with us. This is a great video. One of my all time favorites. Everything you said in this video is so important and so true. I had a play room when I was an only child. And there were toy rooms at our grandparents houses. If you have room for it, I say go for it. I think kids sleep better in clean and less chaotic rooms. Keeping the toys elsewhere is my goal once we have the room.

As a grandparent, I like the idea of having the kids' stuff all in one place. When the children visit, some toys may be brought out of that room to play, but when it's time for them to go back home, the toys need to be put back in the room and hopefully back on the shelf or in the closet. Our daughter used to have a specific time in the afternoon for snacks and if the children wanted a snack, they needed to clean up the toys first. (Also must clean up one toy to 'make room to play' with another toy thereby making less mess.)

You're absolutely right about letting kigs see you cleaning (and participating). When my mom was raising me, she usually cleaned when I was already in bed. She (still) considers cleaning and tidying the least possible activity, so she didn't clean much and we never did it together. So I had to learn the art of cleaning, organizing etc. the hard way on my path to adulthood.

One thing you said that hit home for me is "Allow your kids to see you clean". When I was growing up, I never saw my mom clean. We always had a neat, tidy, and clean house, however, I honestly didn't know how it got that way. My mom ALWAYS cleaned when we were at school or asleep. Guess what - when I got my first apartment, I didn't know how to clean or that it was something that you really had to manage daily. Another good thing is to let your kids "help you clean". Will it be clean to your standards? NO. Will it be frustrating at times? YES. Let them do it anyway. My 6-year-old autistic grandson LOVES to have "jobs". When I clean he always wants to help and I let him. I tell him why I'm doing something, show him how I do it then step back and allow him to take over. There have been times when I've learned a shortcut or two from him. Kids can/do teach us things every day.

Our kids are grown, but we have grandkids now. I've gone through baskets and bins for their toys. Recently we got a 2x4 Kallax unit from IKEA. Set the long way, with 4 bins on the bottom row. Their toys are in there. It looks when they are not here and after they are and clean up, it looks nice again.

Hope this finds you and baby #4 doing well and getting some much needed rest! As a long time mom of 1 (yep 1) I am always amazed at women who have more than 2. Mainly because after having had a C-section and knowing I would have to have another if I wanted more I basically said No Way Jose! And being military and moving around with a bunch of kids wasn’t something I was prepared to do. Maybe having a couple of kids instead of just one would have forced me to be organized. I raised three children, so I totally agree about the cluttering gathering fast. Now it's only the two of us. As my husband has gotten older, he is causing as much clutter as the children did together. He feels like he's got to have everything right there within arms reach. It drives me nuts!! I am a person who thinks that every thing in my house has a place, out of sight with no cluttered up dining table, end tables, night stand, etc. But he has his end table cluttered, his night stand cluttered and if you could see the table that we eat at would make you cringe because it does me. If he had his choice, my kitchen countertops would be cluttered but the kitchen is my domain and off limits to him and don't think I've not told him that. I can handle a tad bit of clutter in my older age but his clutter is getting under my skin. It's just laziness and ridiculous.

Different peoples brains work differently though. Plus with aging forgetting where you put things can be an issue. Maybe you can come up with a compromise? Like a cute container to put his things in ?

@@PinkRose0910 This is what I was going to say, too. It might not be just aging. Maybe he has ADHD or some other type of neurodivergence? Either way, calling it laziness does no one any favors. Like you said, maybe they can compromise. I'd recommend they watch Clutterbug and figure out their individual organizing styles, then they can find ways to compromise that work with both of their brains.

Kids don’t need a lot of toys. They are happier with less toys. My daughter was happier when we had moved all of her stuff out of her room for some remodeling and had about 3 things left to play with. That was 3 and half years ago and she still talks about how much she likes having nothing in her room. She gets overwhelmed. But I don’t know how to keep things down without taking away some stuff she loves. She loves her Barbie’s, legos and crafts, all of which tend to make a big mess.

@@ritadyer9295 I think of kids' toys like I think of kitchen tools. You probably don't need a fancy gadget for everything, but you'll make better meals if you have a variety of pots and pans and different spoons/spatulas/tongs, etc. If you only ever have a saucepan and a whisk, you're pretty limited. Kids' who just have 5 toys or less, no matter how creative, will be limited in how they can play, and for children their work is play. Legos and Barbies are great toys, and usually the more you have, the more you can expand your play. Both are open ended toys that require a lot of imagination to utilize, which are great for your daughter. Craft supplies are also excellent, she is learning and honing so many skills by creating arts and crafts. I know she loves an open space-- I do too. But she needs all her 'tools' in order to do her work (play.) Maybe the two of you can do some research on how professional woodworkers or seamstresses organize their work stations, and if she sees organizing her toys as a means to create her own workstation then it won't be so overwhelming.

Your daughter may be too young for this yet - it has lots of experiments with it and some precious stones. I liked rocks when I was little too. This lasted through college..Hope everything is going well with the new baby!

So are naturally organized kids autistic or have OCD? I don't think you can make a blanket statement like kids aren't organized. Part of it is being positive, like being encouraging when they put dirty clothes, in the hamper. I have definitely felt kids were playing with all their toys, all the time.
