I think the "Redemption" in the title "The Shawshank Redemption" is Red being redeemed. Red had no hope and no belief he could ever have a life outside the institution. Andy gave him hope and in a was a force helping with Red's personal life redemption. IMHO

Originally the movie was supposed to end where we see the bus driving into the distance but test audiences didnt like it. So they added the beach scene and the voiceover.... Now its a classic

I saw this movie for the first time last year on a flight from Tokyo to Los Angeles. I remember I was browsing the movies and then I saw it. I always heard of the movie growing up but never tried to go outta my way to see it. I cried like a little kid once the credits started rolling and the Japanese old lady next to me was asking if I was ok and I just said “this movie is so beautiful 😭” hahaha😅

Now you can say, I've seen a proper movie! Undoubtably the Stephen King story was the making of this film, together with some great movie actors. I remember reading the Stephen King short story this movie was based on. It wasn't my favorite in the anthology of short stories in the book. I would've never believed such a magnificent movie would come out of it. It wasn't a big hit at the theaters and until people watched it at home, did it become the #1 movie on a lot of people's favorite movie list.

This was filmed in Mansfield, Ohio at the closed Ohio Reformatory. The prison is now a museum and is open for tours. The film saved it from the wrecking ball. Several movies/shows have used it for filming.

Another King novel with a film based on it is "The Green Mile" (with Tom Hanks, David Morse, Michael Clark Duncan RIP) -- same director as "Shawshank" too, Frank Darabont. Highly recommended.

You guys are great. I saw this movie when it first came out and many, many times since. Not only is it IMHO the greatest film ever made, but I've realized (thanks to KZbin) that it's also the best movie to watch other people's first-time reactions to... it's like reliving the first time I watched it myself, which had me go through every emotion possible and ultimately just blew me away. All of the gut-wrenching scenes, all the pain and anguish you feel through these characters, set you up for the most satisfying ending in cinematic history. Hope is a good thing

When a person has been institutionalized, that means they cannot function outside of the institution they came from. There are a lot of people who have been in prison who have intentionally committed crimes once they have gotten out just so they can go back into prison because they cannot cope with the outside world. A person does not have to be in prison for 50 years to be institutionalized. I know someone who was in prison for a lot less than 50 years. Perhaps 20 and when they get out, they committed another crime or violated their parole. Even if they didn’t consciously commit a crime or violate parole, subconsciously they did. Instead of changing their lifestyle when they got out, they started hanging around the same types of friends that got them in prison of in the first place. Additionally, this person was very immature. Mentally and emotionally they were at the same age they were when they went in prison 20 years earlier. I know someone else who also have been in prison a long time. They were in prison for 17 years and when they got out, they stayed out. They got a job soon after they got out working for an office cleaning service. After a few years, this person started their own office cleaning service and has been doing it at least five years by now. Not everyone with a long prison sentence are institutionalized but often they are.

I think you've made a mistake with this one though, because the movie is not about Andy's redemption, it is about Red's. I hope that you noticed that in the conversation at the wall, after Andy was released from solitary, Red says that "Hope is just a shitty pipe dream," an interesting bit of foreshadowing, and at the end, in the bus says, "I hope. I hope."

Its an incomprehensible thing to lose due to innocent circumstances, i myself did at age 12... and i escaped all the way back home 1 time after being gone for 2 years, which is 100 years when your that age.... ill never forgwt the feeling getting off the bus and running all the way across my city nonstop to my neighborhood. Its a feeling that only someone thats been gone against their will can feel, but i wish everyone in the world could feel it just once! Now mind you i hadn't had 1 single minute totaly alone in over 2 years! That long long bus ride home i so cleverly constructed was so insane, like red said in this movie while he was on his bus ride... i could hardly sit still or hold a single thought in my head... the cars were different, my town had grown n changed so much also... all the new big buildings.. this was in 1985. Anyways... i was placed in a bad boys home very very far away from my home. I broke out finally, and by the help of God i made it all the way home for 3 hole days befor i was caught and sent back! It seemed impossible to make so far, it might as well had been on the other side of the world bc to a 12 year old thats exactly what it was to me.... and i made it. Freedom is our most valuable assets we have, that and our health. All the injustices that innocent people are subjected to in them circumstances to me are beyond inhumane. I finally got to go home at 17. Was home for 6 months maybe if that and ive been on my own basically since i was taken away that early spring day in 1982... out in 1987.. 5 years... felt like a life time... hope was all i held on to, hope. Seeing my best friend... hope seeing my 2 sisters... hope of having time alone by myself.. thats what kept me here, that hope. Bc it was the only thing i had left in me and i had to fight like hell just to hold onto that n not give up as other wards of the state kids did. FREEDOM

If you want to watch a movie where the wrongfully convicted guy who has nearly lost all hope gets a redemption through the legal system, I recommend The Hurricane (1999) starring Denzel Washington. Bonus -- it's based on a true story. It's really good.

I respect it being number one on IMDb (it is my top Drama), but how it got that rating is not simply it being universally loved. A petty war between "The Dark Night" fans and "Godfather" fans over which film should in the top spot, led to each of them attacking the "other" film, by giving it the lowest rating possible. After fans of both knocked each other out, Shawshank was alone on top. IMDb changed they way film's the votes were counted after that point, which will probably lock down the top five forever.

It has been the no. 1 rated film above the Godfather 1&2 every time I checked since that began. So others agree. It’s interesting to periodically look at because it changes but not as much as you’d think - and movies that shouldn’t be there because they were good but not that good do have a relatively short term stay but presumably due to a well written algorithm end up going away. I’ve made sure to watch everything in the top 250 and if something appears I’ll check it but as I say often they’re good but don’t deserve a permanent place there. This does!

Hope and salvation are the underlying themes of the Shawshank Redemption, and, of course, the Bible is the ultimate source of hope and salvation for all men, which is why the Holy Bible is a another recurring theme throughout the movie. (It is no accident that Andy conceals the rock hammer, which is the instrument by which he achieves his escape and wins his freedom, within the pages of Exodus.) By the way, the redemption is Red’s, not Andy’s. It is Red who has lost his hope and faith in mankind during his long years of imprisonment, and in whom hope needs to be rekindled.

The editing was wonderful in this video. But, I must stress…don’t get too hung up on criticisms. Just make small improvements along the way. If you look at some of the most established movie reaction channels, their first few videos are not so great and trial and error with sound, video, and editing. So, just keep your head forward doing the best reactions you can and your channel will grow. Onward!

This film diddnt do very well when it came out. The subject matter and length put movie goers off. Its was nominated fo 9 Oscars but didn't win a single one. But at that time you rents movies on VHS tape to watch at home and word of mouth went round as to how good this was for a night in. It now ranks in the top 10 or top 5 even of the greatest films ever made. I've watched this film loads of time and there lots of little things you miss at first. Red tells Andy 'hope is a shitty pipe dream' and he then goes on to find hope crawling along a shitty pipe. Also the picture showing Red as a young man is actually a picture of Morgan Freemans son.

I ALSO feel that Shawshank Redemption is the best movie EVER made!!! 🥲 What is REALLY gonna pickle most of your brains though (which NOT many people know or figured out) is that, if you pay attention to the timeline and I mean REALLY pay attention, like, mathematically work it out, 🤔 Andy Dufresne COULD have escaped from Shawshank Prison a WHOLE YEAR EARLIER than he did!!! 😲 The tunnel was already dug, and he had his escape plan worked out, BUT, he stayed the extra year to help young Tommy work through his high school equivalency and pass the exam! ✍The fact that Warden Norton had him shot 4 times in the back by CPT Hadley 💔 was the final straw that broke the camels back so he thought "fuck it" I've had enough and I'm off! 🖕His time in the hole (the 2 months) the warden thought was punishing Andy for, ONLY gave him the time required to think 🧠of a way to screw HIM (the Warden) over and get some MUCH needed payback!!! So he came up with the plan to hit him where it hurts the most, in his pockets and his reputation! 🤑👋 Hope this helps and sheds a little light on this fairly unknown plot twist for you all?! 🙂

@@ImmersiveReactions the other thing I found humorous is that for the more eagle eyed 🔎out there, you will notice that Andy's rock hammer ⛏was hidden in the bible at the start of the book of Exodus (you notice the warden skips RIGHT to it where the string marker is?!?!) 🤔 The word Exodus in Latin means "To exit or depart" which I find the REAL irony of that scene and just TOO funny!!! lol 😂🤣😂🤣
