LIFE IN BASILAN - I'M BACK ONE YEAR LATER.
I first came here last June, and loved it so much that I came back a month later.
This time around, I spent one and a half days trying to really understand how life is in 2023, with lots of different explorations around Isabela City, the island's largest.
From Marang-Marang, whose women's association is rapidly developing with a new floating cottage and a thriving weaving industry, to the former JW Strong/American Rubber/BF Goodrich rubber plantation in Barangay Baluno that's now under a cooperative, to seeing old friends on the boulevard, to Isabela City's public market on bagsakan day (products are brought from the nearby mountains to the city every Sunday) to a local-style lunch on Block 4 beach - these were such great experiences.
Isabela City - I love its diversity, its vibrancy, and its openness.

One can see from the public market scene how rich the soil and the waters are around Basilan. If we did not have a peace and order issue there for decades, this place and a lot of the people in it would be very wealthy now and the place would also be a great tourist destination. Ansel, whenever I watch your vlogs I can't help but be amazed at how you discover and explore introducing those various parts of our country and culture. Something that most of us has never done in our entire lifetime. Historically they have big links with modern day Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. That's how trade flowed, even with merchants from as far as China and Arabia. It has a hugely different history...
