Mahadhammarakkhita (Sanskrit: Mahadharmaraksita, literally "Great protector of the Dharma") was a Greek (in Pali:"Yona", lit. "Ionian") Buddhist master, who lived during the 2nd century BCE during the reign of the Indo-Greek king Menander. In the Mahavamsa, a key Pali historical text, he is recorded as having travelled from “Alasandra” (thought to be Alexandria of the Caucasus, around 150 kilometers north of today's Kabul, or possibly Alexandria of the Arachosians), with 30,000 monks for the dedication ceremony of the Maha Thupa ("Great stupa") at Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka, when it was completed shortly after the death of the Sri Lankan king Dutthagamani Abhaya (r. 161 - 137 BCE). The Mahamvasa lists the congregations that visited Sri Lanka for the dedication of the Maha Thupa, explaining that: "From Alasanda the city of the Yonas came the thera (elder) Yona Mahadhammarakkhita with thirty thousand bhikkhus." (Mahavamsa, XXIX) This reference is seen as having several implications regarding the role of the Greeks in the Buddhist community at that time:[citation needed] Alexandria of the Caucasus or Alexandria of the Arachosians, cities under the control of the Greek king Menander, had a Buddhist monk population of possibly as many as 30,000, indicating a flourishing Buddhist culture under the Greeks. 🇬🇷❤️🇱🇰

This video offers a great balance of the pros and cons of living in Crete. It's helpful to see both the beauty and the challenges.

Many many untrue facts, gross exaggerations. The Greek islands are never boring. In fact, winter is so good simply because there are no TOURISTS. If you find it boring, then you are not OK with yourself or with the superb nature that the islands offer.

Fun fact: this video is tongue in cheek. Nudity in Greece exists, but is not prevalent. Spain has the most topless beaches. Croatia has a bit of it too.
@lovely784021 күн бұрын
Croatia has LOADS of beaches were people are nude, even though they're not 'officially' nudist beaches. The 'official' ones are less common, but as I said, people don't care, they just go to beaches that are traditionally nudist.

There are some misinformation in this video and exagerations. For example health care system is not that bad in Crete especially compared to the other islands. Also in winter the island can still offer interesting stuff, obviously less than summer but still a lot again compared to other islands. There are indeed almost all of the things that the video described but less prevalent than how it describes them. Like nudity in beaches and cannabis exist but not that prevalent. For example people really nowadays in Crete do not care at all about having a boy or a girl and they name the children mostly off their grandparents names and not the parents names. Other than that a pretty good video

Banks and public servants work 8 hours, not 6! They close at 14:00 only for the public. Then they do administrative work until 16:00.

Crete sounds like it’s all about the extremes! But is this really what life on the island is like day-to-day, or is this just another overhyped portrayal? I’d love to hear from locals-do the beaches and nightlife define Crete, or is there a quieter, more traditional side that tourists never get to see? Seems like there’s got to be more to the story!
@christychristy978926 күн бұрын
You can definitely see both sides simultaneously. You can choose how you want to live however.

Crete is number one island in Greece for family vacations. The clubs featured here are confined to specific areas of resort towns where most of us do not go at all due to the crowds and the noise.

Tourism is NOT the main source of income. It represents 20-21% of the GDP. A big contribution, but not the main one. If it was the main source of income this would mean that the rest of the sources would contribute less than 20%. So, in overall, Greece would have max. 40% of its GDP!

Telling a Frenchman that you are a Cretan may elicit a wry smile of confusion.

Despite the hard work behind this presentation it is interesting how you manage to distort the facts and jump to conclusions that are far from reality. We cannot have an operation in Crete? For specialised treatment people prefer to travel to Athens. Also, because they can afford it. Not because there is no alternative.
