Finland is a beautiful country with thousand of lakes and great nature. But one of the things that people complain the most about is winter.
In this video i will explain just a few things i do to manage the winter, in regards to Cold, Darkness and Winter Blues.
FYI
I am in Oulu which is about 600 km up north from Helsinki, so its pretty cold.

Thank you. We ve been in Oulu in September and it was pretty cool. We want to move to Finland and we would loveeeee to live near Lappland. But we have to check first how it is in the summer, since I get allergies from the mosquito bites and they told us in Lappland are way more. Can anyone give me more informations about that? Luckily, I got no allergies YET from the Finnish mosquitos bites. In Germany it’s very Bad, they get so huge and lasts for more weeks. And they are really big. Can get to the size of my back of my hand, doesn’t surprises me anymore. Biteaway is my thing I always carry with me being outdoor in summer. But our guys had in September pretty much mosquitos!!!! I thought in Finnland it would be too cold already but nope.

Cat, you are sooooooooooooooooo funny!!!! You have such a talent to make me laugh!!! Yes, you speak in English BUT I'm pretty sure you've been raised - and surrounded - by familia y amigos latinos. Tus expresiones y sentido del humor son 100% de algún país de donde el desorden y la anarquía son cosas de todos los días...GRACIAS por hacerme reír muchísimo... Lo necesitaba!!!!

Couple things: First, fat. Please, don't over do it! Rather eat one extra (healthy) snack during a day. You don't need to eat that much more during winter. Second, I think your ways to cope with "winter blues" are perfectly fine. I don't personally believe in winter blues and I think it's just something people "learn", because everyone talks about it. But to survive the darkest time in winter, you just need routines, exercise and stay positive and not to be up set from every little things and set backs. Third, I don't know why you suddenly popped to my recommended list, but nevertheless it's great to see your videos, especially that I am from Oulu and I think it's the greatest city in Finland :) Stay positive! :)

In summer the darkness turns to light. So she would experience 20h of light. It can mess with your sleep schedule too.

I like the darkness, kaamos. But yeah the sun does good too, but thats why we spend all summer outside. Most of us drunk AF 'cuz of those perkeleen hyttyset. *NNNNNnnnnnNNNnnn*. I hate them. Maybe the worst thing about finland: mosquitos. But the summer (and those tiny devils) last only _almost_ 2 months so it's not that bad... the hangover in fall is :DD Cheers from Funland!

I was wondering why you appeared in my recommendations. But then you confessed to like darkness "Hello darkness, my old friend..." Have you heard the Henk Port's take on the song? People claim vitamin D is a solution to winter blues. Vitamin C was quite close and it used to be problem before we started getting all year around fruits from foreign trade. I haven't personally tried additional vitamin D.

Eat fat? Someone has been kidding you. Of course if you work outside half year in -20 °C, you will need some extra energy. Plus you will see the sun 3-4 hours. Those who work inside (cubic rats, etc.) don't need extra fat. But the only glimpse of sun is during they lunch hour - if they go out. Otherwise it's pitch black at morning when you take your kids to school and go to work, and at afternoon when you took your kids from school and go home through supermarket. So... living every half a year all you life in a dark freezer may affect, that's why winterblues. Think about it, 80 years old people have spend about 40 years in subzero without sun. Many finns have a solution for this problem by making a suicide at november. Those who don't, drink more alcohol a) to keep they minds off the darkness b) keep you blood not freezing. So that's why they invented xmas. Festival of light and presents and food and family keeps you going until january when the sun starts getting little bit higher every day. For some reasons suicides are quite common also at spring. I don't know why. Well, the winter does something to your mind... By the way, it is very easy to make suicide in Finland. You just need a bottle of vodka. Get drunk, walk in dark woods at winter when temperature is something like -15 to -30, throw your jacket away and pass out in snow, at the morning you are frozen stiff. May be someone will find your body next summer - or not, depends how deep in the woods you are. They call those drunken accidents. By the way, have you tried to drive a car on icy roads in blizzard? Every damn day your way to work and back. Yeah, that's why finns have so much good rally drivers. And why we are considered quiet people? Very soon kids learn that keeping your mouth shut keeps you warmer. OK, may be I'm exaggerating a little bit, but you know what I mean.

What just happened? No, hei! - I see from comments that you have adobted the native way of use "no". Okay, winter is coming, again. Fortunately without the living dead. I have one more suggestion to your winter survival, what to eat: fish. Fish fat is good for winter, has lots of D-vitamine. Alright, you started to sound like a proper Finn with your coffee addiction! I don't really recommend putting it in your lemondade though. Because, lemonade is bad for you, mkay? I suppose my style is putting it in my milk, when rarely I drink coffee. Yeah I confess, I'm not adding many gramms yearly to the coffee consumption here (and there was much surprise among the audience). Which means that someone else must drink my share too, of the average consumption. Hot wine/juice (glogg) is of course good and traditional too, especially Christmas time. And hot chocolate, "kaakao". Funny, with the eyeballs falling off.. hah. Strange that a girl from tropics is so fine with the long dark. Would think it's a shock. Last winter I think I had "kaamosväsymys" (dark season depression). And I don't think I ever had one before. I'm not a fan with the face melting lamp idea either, but I think there's a point even squid dance doesn't do the trick. But no, we don't see psychiatrists in Finland. Not our thing. This is not the USA. You have something wrong with your coo-coo, you'll blend in the crown just perfectly. Weird is perfectly normal, and even preferred. About the "What the dark, dreadful morning"... are you familiar with Maila Nurmi? If/when you are, isn't it proper (regarding the subject) that the woman of that character came from here?

Ahh yes. I didnt know but i googled her and you are right. The darkness and winter thing, i had mady encounters with other immigrants from multiple places, and most people dislike winter even Finns, fortunately my spouse enjoys the winter as well :D. I just dont like loska and räntä.

@@cat_rivers Yeah, there' only a few reasons to love winter. Kids do, winter sports people, people with pollen allergies, resort owners and workers too. And I've never met anyone who loves loska. I'd rather have year around summer.
