Carnevale is a holiday that lasts traditionally from 2nd february to the tuesday before the Ash Wednesday, but it's celebrated chiefly in the week before that: the thursday before Ash Wednesday is "Giovedì Grasso" (Fat Thursday), then there is "Sabato Grasso" (Fat Saturday) and then "Martedì Grasso" (Fat Tuesday / Mardi Gras). It's a holiday that in the old days celebrated the hope for the end of winter and allowed people to enjoy themselves and even subvert the social order, with license to play pranks and jokes on each other and even on public and authoritative or socially high people, to eat a lot of food for free and enjoy life in general, before the strict and sober time of Lent. The masquerade was a way to subvert the social order, because with a mask and/or a costume you could be anyone and behave like you wanted, beyond your census and social position. In modern times masquerading is usually reserved to children, but in Venice the old custom was maintained and during Carnevale you see a lot of people going around with masks and costumes, challenging each other to be the most creative and luxurious possible.
