Olá Nick, daqui é a Jessie.

Lovely conversation with a local. I am a strong believer in expats doing their best to integrate with the locals and the culture. That’s a positive development. Unfortunately, with real estate prices skyrocketing, inflation and the over-crowding in Funchal, and Madeirans’ inability to keep up with the rising prices has lead to a somewhat negative sentiment towards expats looking to make Madeira their retirement paradise. My wife has family there and when we visited last year, they shared their disappointment with how the local economy had been impacted by the expats. You can say it’s a double sword because the island is so dependent on tourism, yet tourism feeds into more people wanting to live there. Thank you Mike and Jessie for this valuable insight.

Hello there @adman4you, we quite understand your sentiment and yours, it was important to us to get a Madeiran's point of view. It's a beautiful island but as you say it can't be easy to manage living there. All the best to you and thanks for dropping by.

Ooh we do need a New Years video for sure if you are there for it. I am American, my dream is to live in Madeira one day. I guess the goal is be able to have enough money to buy a condo or apartment for full cash to avoid dealing with the complexity of mortgages abroad. That way I can at least have a chance to be there for 6 months. Perhaps eventually being able to get legal status to live their longer.
@LivingWalks Жыл бұрын
Hi there Wyldstallion, love your name btw! I do hope your dream comes true. I’d recommend chatting to Jessie if you are really considering it. They’ve certainly helped make things clearer for us, it can be a complicated business. This year we were in the Canary Islands for Christmas, so we missed the new years festivities for once. I do have some footage of the last couple of years there though, if that grabs you. I think it wouldn’t be too far different. Hope to bring you many more films from Madeira to get you in the mood until you can be here for real. All the best to you and happy new year.

@@LivingWalks Thank you! Just keep doing what you are doing. I got a ways to go unfortunately. But I'm always plugging away with the goal to escape the rat race that is daily living in the USA cities. How much does a 2 bedroom condo or apartment in Funchal go these days? Particularly near where Martimo soccer team's stadium is?
@LivingWalks11 ай бұрын
Hi mate, best of luck with that goal. Well price wise they vastly vary in that area but the best place to get a rough idea is through Funchal’s pages on idealista. Alas, they’re certainly not getting anymore affordable here that’s for sure.

Interesting to listen to this, thank you! It's sad to hear that locals have difficulty getting homes due to low minimum wages and rising home prices. I talked to a man who owns a restaurant in Lido, he grew up as a kid in Lido. Back then Lido was just greenery with banana trees and fields, and now it's all just hotels. He said he misses those days. Tourism is kind of a double-edged sword, maybe a necessary evil in some regard. I think I understand what she means with good progress would be to not be as dependent on tourism as the island is now. Personally, next time I visit Madeira I would love to see Madeiran traffic be all-electric in Funchal. Imagine getting rid of the noise from all vehicles. There are probably lots of opportunities for the island to become energy-independent as well.
@LivingWalks11 ай бұрын
Hey @freedomhacking, it is a dilemma. The ideal would be that a country uses the tourist dollar to create clean affordable housing for the local population, and encourage other industries to reduce the reliance on tourism, but I don't know how much that ever happens. You're right though, Madeira has a lot of opportunities and I hope they make the best of them.

Hi Mike and Jessie, so the golden visa has finished?
@LivingWalks11 ай бұрын
Hi, no it's a bit more complicated than that. I believe that investing in property has been removed from the golden visa program, but there's still other options available. John or Jessie would be better to speak to for the full details...

I don't know myself as I've not looked at a mortgage, but I wonder if the mortgage calculator on Idealista might give some idea? www.idealista.pt/en/imovel/32114060/

It's a shame how many Portuguese have had to leave their country to make better money and a life somewhere else, especially those who left Madeira and the Azores islands. My family left, but I am hoping to return probably at retirement. My children would likely struggle if they returned to Portugal 🇵🇹 at their age in their 30s.

@LivingWalks Thank you for your response. The natural beauty ,safety , friendly people and slower pace of life is what draws many people to the Portuguese islands. You can't blame them.

Nice Advertisement for property investors. Lol. The island is wildly overbuilt and tourists can barely rent cars nowadays,young people leave the island due to very low pay for high demand hospitality jobs for snooty expats.
