Impressive footage with street scenes of Berlin in summer 1945 in a completely destructed city, e.g rubble women (so-called "Trümmerfrauen") starting to build up their houses, policemen organizing the traffic against the background of the ruins.

Seeing this in such excellent quality is amazing. To think all these people we are still seeing, are likely dead now but in the film they were so young and had a full life in front of them. I was stationed here with the American Army's Berlin Brigade Bco 5/502 INF from 1988-1992. I was there the night the wall came down. I had just left McNair Barracks and headed to my housing on Flanagan Strasse. While 40 years is a long time after the war, we were the final American soldiers who closed the door and turned off the lights. It has now been over 30 years since I left. Hopefully I'll make it back one day.

my father was u.s.army and inside when the berlin airlift took place.he helped a young german girl that was around 13 who had 2 very small siblings(a boy and little sister) and their great aunt that was very frail.in the last days of the war,their mother had been raped and killed by the russians,the father taken by the russians and never returned.the rest of their family fell victim to the russian shelling/attacking the city .he was not suppose to do things to help them but many soldiers did help others,especially orphan children because they could not turn their back on these people who had nothing left.dad said,he was a typical american softy.

Brilliant footage - just been there. We stayed straight opposite the dome near museum island. I looked for evidence of the battles in 1945. Lots of rifle and lMG damage all around that precinct and along the river - testament to the final battle in April / May. Seeing the state of the Tiergarten, Brandenburg gate and that whole district around the Reichstag and Reichs Kanzlei it really is remarkable how they re-built. And at this time crossing from the British sector to the soviet sector with no trouble and just driving the jeep down the Unter Den Linden. All that would change once the cold war set in. Just another ordeal.

@@tucrin8717 After the war, a lot of Germans were without work and people were not happy, that's when the USA started the Marshal plan and yes they did make it a showcase but that was not hard to do because eastern Germany was having real hard times. If you are old enough, you remember what we called the cold war and did the Berlin airlift. We also did it so we could keep the military there. the occupation ended in 1955 and I got there in 56. considering the damage in Germany and death toll of the Germans. they were very friendly, Liked Germany and the German people.

I always watch these videos thinking that maybe my father may appear in one of them. He turned 21 three weeks after Germany surrendered. His home was in what became the Russian sector of Berlin, and even though it was partially destroyed by Allied bombing oh, he and his mother continued to live in the few rooms that were left. Eventually the Russian state took it over and they were forced to leave, but luckily managed to sneak into the American sector of Berlin, where they were allowed to stay. After the wall came down my dad flew over there and met with his mother to see what had become of the house. It was no longer standing and had been replaced by a block of flats.

​@Solid Water There are many reasons. I somehow feel connected to that time. Berlin was a very dynamic city and even during the Nazi period it was so interesting, especially, the historical buildings that not only were beautiful, but carried the echoes of those who had lived in them. All of that was destroyed by the end of WWII destroying the history and culture of a city that had been around for so long. There is something about walking inside a building knowing that people from the past had walked through it. It gives a place some grounding and an opportunity for the people of every generation to carry that history through into the future. And now that the city has been rebuilt, it's a new city. It's as if Berlin never existed before. Berlin has lost it's past and it's soul! The hustle and bustle energy from the past is not there. It was a chic city and people took care to dress nicely. That's all gone. Berlin feels disjointed now. There is ultimately something to be said about a city that has had the most amazing historical buildings that are all gone now. Our generation will never know what it felt like to walk in the streets of Berlin in the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s. It's such a shame! So I will continue to look at footage from the 1930s and 1940s. It's the only chance I get to see what Berlin was like and the extent of the devastating the destruction that came afterwards. Many people who had lived in Berlin during the 1920s, 1930s and early 40s never came back. Their houses, apartments and family legacies were gone. I know this feeling of despair because I went through a revolution and I have been permanently cut off from my homeland and my country's history. Perhaps another reason for my interest is that my great uncle lived in Berlin during the late 1930s and into the early 1940s. I would have loved to have been with him in Berlin at that time!

@@rainerzufall4079 Thank you so much, I was right it's no longer there. Maybe they'll rebuild it like they did the Stadtschloss. Though I kind of doubt that will happen. Edit: Just googled, they're going to put some new monument there, makes more sense I guess though I still find it sad this beauty of a monument will never exist again.

@@richardwagner4285 Hitler took Germany out of poverty without invading other countries, France and England allowed him to recover the territories he had lost, but then he began to invade other countries, and to top it off he signed a non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union, to then break the pact and invade that country, that was Hitler's biggest mistake, maybe the guy was crazy to have made that mistake.

Beautiful, yet so sad imagery recorded. If hindsight can be applied I am certain that everybody was relieved that war and with that constant peril of death was over. Of course there would be tensions ahead, but war was over.

German Army made Berlin one huge garrison and a fortress. They fought there to stop the Soviets so the city became a battlefield. That's why it was ruined.

@@capnordest when Hitler gained popularity and power he started to rebuild Germany through road building and infrastructure, rebuilding core needs, gaining him massive support by him giving employment to the many in need. it was a massive knock on effect, factories supplying the workers, the workers demanding supllies, families getting fed, unemployed gaining employment, all the time people looking up to hime as the saviour after the hardship after WW1. cany you sympathise with the people? i know i can. little wonder how he gained in popularity. read upon your history. it;s far more than just "backing Hitler".......much, much,more.
