I am really sad and disappointed that the Zumwalt class was cut short with only 3 ships being built. I see her as the perfect successor to the Arleigh Burke class of destroyers, but not in the configuration she was first designed for. I'm talking about the Zumwalt that is being redesigned now from the shore bombardment support vessel that was supposed to strike targets up to 80 miles in land with her advanced gun system (ADS). We all know what became of the ADS, but the future Zumwalt will be the beast, a true successor to Burke. With 2 AGS removed you free up 1/3 of the ship's volume for anything you can think off. And the US Navy thought off something great - new boost glide hypersonic missiles. With upgrading Zumwalt's radar with the new SPY-6 radar and with an Aegis combat system, you can fill her Mark 57 VLS tubes with anything from the groundbraking SM-6 to LRASM to quad packed ESSMs. And last but not least, Zumwalt was originally designed as a ship with a huge electrical output and a room to grow, which is important for laser weapons that are coming, sooner than any of us thought.. All in all, with her massive 15 000 tonnes displacement Zumwalt was actually a cruiser sized ship, so she could have replaced Ticos with ease... The new destroyer US Navy is working on, as a replacement for Arleigh Burke class, starting somewhere in mid 2030s, is an awesome piece of tech, no doubt about it, but the tumblehome design and those flat surfaces without protruding stuff out of her, made the Zumwalt mean looking, a true base for the US Navy's 21st century main surface combatant.. Well, it is what it is, I just hope they won't retire the whole class because they are to expensive to maintain. Although I doubt that is in Zumwalt's future given the massive investments the Navy is making by ripping AGS and installing new hypersonic missiles on board.

They're not going to need more than 3 Zumwalts. Plus the new DDG is in the works to replace the Burke. Most of the info here about the Zum is bull. She's going to be running lasers, satellite weapons, running the ORCA's, and most certainly a railgun at 55+ knots. All while running as submerged as an ironclad presenting less of a physical target than it does an electric one.

The most important part of naval machines is the maintenance cost and it's duration, as well as the efficiency in the missions. You may find advanced machines in different markets with tremendous capability, but the problem is not being ready when you need them due to maintenance issues and operations budget issues. Readiness is more important than capability in war machines.
@BMF68892 жыл бұрын
The Navy bit off more advanced technology than they had a handle on. Better to have built Arleigh Burk size stealth destroyers to ensure the stealth technology was workable. And the Navy didn't wait to see if the rail gun would be feasible before building the Zumwalt class. And by the time the Navy was down to only 3 Zumwalt class destroyers, the conventional gun that was supposed to be the interim solution prior to the rail gun the cost per round of ammunition was up to $1 million per round. And the Zumwalt class ended up not having any more offensive/defensive capabilities than an Arleigh Burke destroyer already has.' I doubt that the Navy will ever put a 4 billion dollar ship in harm's way when it has so little capability to contribute to winning a war, unless it becomes a last available option. Now think of the maintenance costs of maintaining three very unique ships that have nothing in common with the rest of the Navy ships. Bad dog--No bone.

Dude, this video is just so wrong. There are only three DDG-1000 Zumwalt-class USN DDGs; no more will be produced and this has been the case for many years now, so I have no idea what source gave you the number of seven. The AGS turrets don't provide any firepower as the custom shells to be fired from those guns were never manufactured due to abhorrent per unit costs (they lost economies of scale going from 32 Zumwalts planned to just 3 manufactured, so each sell was rumored to be priced at $80,000); again this has been known for years. It was just announced the guns will be removed on the Zumwalts altogether in order to install a newly designed and larger VLS shaft to be the first USN ship able to launch one of the new hypersonic missile designs, with maintenance and upgrades to be started by the end of this year.
