Like all great films of the early seventies, this one couldn`t have been made ten years before or ten years later. It perfectly fits that great film period of 1967-1976.

I honestly never saw anything or anyone in musical like miss Liza as Sally. She's incredible in this role. To me she set a new standard for musical-leading roles, all by herself. And I am ever so greatful: Chapeau to you, Liza Minelli!

So did I! My school went during the Stratford Theater Festival this September. I also saw Caesar and Cleoptra, as well as The Taming of the Shrew. But Cabaret was undoubtedly the best theater piece I saw there.

What a great big brassy B roadway voice. And her personality and performance style is no smaller. but if you don't think she can do something more subtle, more diminutive, more contained, you are wrong. Tons of facets to her talent.

@spareaxe and gingernut4732: This story takes place a few years prior to WWII in decadent pre-war Germany (mid to late 1930's, but obviously before 1939). @TheSoulMan8: Perhaps Liza chose to sing this song "beautifully" to mirror the way many Germans were partying so frantically to forget what was going on outside the Cabaret, it was rather grotesque. I find similar symbolism in the performances of the extremely creepy Cabaret Girls and the Emcee.

Girlfriend known as Elsie---- Nicole from Moulin Rouge is Elsie. Plainly....does anyone see how PERFECTLY that fits her. i wish someone would do this song with clips from moulin rouge. Like when she's laying out like a queen on the floor strewn with rose petals and she's in her evening dress. not what you would call ablushing flower(moods to impress the duke), rented by the hour. the day she died..pills and liquor. i remember how she'd turn to me and say-- "the french are glad to die for love
