The main thing about converting is to remember that if you do, you have a whole life ahead of you to learn and participate so don't feel compelled to rush. Your conversion process will not be to teach you everything, it's to instill into you a love for jewish learning and a basic understanding of judaism's main principles. You will have a long time, G-d willing, to learn and explore and love judaism. This is coming from someone who started the process at 19, converted at 20 but really had a lifelong appreciation for judaism, I just didn't know one could convert until much later. Even four years later I do not regret a thing, it was one of the best moments of my entire life, but even I have to remind myself that I am still learning and trying my best when I miss something or don't know something. Bottom line is there's no need to rush, if it is meant to be, it will happen when the time is right!

I realised I wanted to be Jewish from when I was 17 or so, it wasn’t until I was in my 40’s I stumbled upon a serious of novels by Faye Kellerman that I discovered you could convert. It took me 4 years from my first conversation with a rabbi until my being din, in 4 days I’m getting to visit Israel for the first time.

I love how REAL and honest you are! It seems so rare these days! And the haircut is gorgeous! I grew up Catholic and went to Catholic school my whole life, K-12, and generally the tuition would run about $3k-$7k/year depending on the size of your family. We were well below the poverty line so I know we got a great deal of financial assistance for our tuition, and we were active “members” in the same parish for all 13 of my school years.

Your hair is beautiful! I about fell off the couch when you mentioned the tuition. I never could figure out why children of conservatives of most religions were homeschooled and now understand why. My children are 11 months apart (2 girls & 1 boy). They’re now 41, 42 & 43 and are super close. We vacation together, their children are best friends & they’ll call me now and again starting out” Do you know what your daughter did”. Your boys will be inseparable throughout their lives.

Love the new hair cut! I always enjoy hearing about your boys. Isn't it wonderful as a mom to see friendship build between your children? When my girls were really little they developed their own way of communicating and they played together all day. It is so gratifying to see them getting together and helping each other now that they are grown up. Your sons will be best friends throughout their lives! Enjoy all of the ages and stages!

I love your hair. It looks fabulous. Quite chic and so simple to manage with 3 little ones plus all the other things you do. It's an opportunity to be a blessing to others, if one can afford it, to send another child to a Jewish Day School or even one other child for each of your own that you send. It's a tough issue because education is so crucial to successful children and a healthy society even in the secular world around us all. Some private schools offer scholarships and even accept non-Jews. It is a delight that your boys are so unique and yet can play together or around one another for long periods without real conflict.

I am in the conversion process, while I don't have kids (that ship has sailed!) so day school and hebrew school are not something I worry about for my own self. But, I find the biggest struggle is the cost of everything and the accessibility to things (such as a congregational trip to Israel) is not feasible for anyone who is middle class. My synagogue is on a sliding scale so thankfully I can afford the membership. I'm comfortably middle class, but a lot of my extra money goes towards helping my parents out with his health care needs since he's not in good health. I can't afford the $8k it would cost me to go to Israel with my synagogue next year. It's beyond heartbreaking. I could afford to do a trip there myself as I wouldn't stay in a luxury hotel, pay for private guides, private transportation between cities, etc. I'd really love to go with my synagogue. I truly think beyond the expensive luxury Israel trips, there should be more accessibility and fairness within the synagogues. I know that they have to bring in money and the big money donors keep them afloat, but it does make those who can donate *time* like myself versus money feel cast aside. And I am learning from friends who are in similar financial situations in the community feel the same way-- and some have stepped away from being religious Jews *because* of this. I'm still finding my place in the community... maybe my place is to bring light to this and help find safe and accessible spaces for those like myself.
@MachaMongRuad
@MachaMongRuad 2 жыл бұрын
I'm at the beginning of my conversion journey, but this is honestly my biggest fear. I look at even the range of membership costs at my synagogue and it feels just as unattainable as those day school tuition costs. 😱 Thankfully that ship has sailed for me as well!! I'd love to follow what you're able to accomplish with accessibility 💜 [edit] Oh, and MAZEL TOV on your journey!!

You have to pay to be a member of a synagogue?
@MachaMongRuad
@MachaMongRuad 2 жыл бұрын
@@agirly1503 To have a vote on things that affect the whole congregation, or say for getting first crack at registering for High Holy Day services and such, yes, you need to be a dues-paying member. It's like tithing in the Catholic church, except generally paid all at once instead of in the offering plate every Sunday. The money pays for a lot of great things within the synagogue, just unfortunately it seems to be assumed that all current and future members are well-off families rather than broke individuals. 😅
@sarnobyl
@sarnobyl 2 жыл бұрын
@@MachaMongRuad @agirly1503 My synagogue has a sliding dues scale. They have suggested amounts but we can pay what we can. I pay what I can. It's not much but I give what I can. I make decent money but also have elderly parents I help financially. That comes first. But still, those who donate big money are the ones who get on the board, who come first in basically everything, etc. It sucks, but money talks, even in religion. It's the one thing that's making me rethink my choice.

As someone who went k-12 in Catholic schools in a Midwestern city: the schools I went to weren't designed to compete with private schools per say. The focus was primarily on solid academics plus roughly an hour a day of religious education. There certainly were Catholic schools in my city designed to compete with elite private schools but most of them were attached to a neighborhood church and just designed to provide a quality education/compete with public school. Certainly the church subsidized some of the costs but this is a piece one might not realize from the outside. Yes it was private but not of the same caliber as some private schools.

Yes, life is changing. After 7 years of doing all the childcare for our grandchildren, the little one enters full time kindergarten next week. So we will retire a second time. But they will be going to religious school on Sundays, and I have committed to get them there and back. Very fortunate that their mother, who is not Jewish, respects all of my efforts to teach them about Judaism. Your calendar hangs on the wall in their home so mom knows which holiday comes when. I do the teaching and model what we do. We will see where it takes them.
