So a moment from this episode that was very quick but I think was very important (and I'm glad you discussed) was the moment Sean goes out to smoke and tries to move something like Daniel. Most of the time in stories like this with someone getting powers, those around them generally react in two ways: fear or jealousy. I think we're so focused on raising and guiding Daniel that we don't need to ignore that Sean is still a kid too and still growing and developing, and I think he might be kind of jealous of Daniel and those feeling might grow stronger as Daniel's powers grow stronger.
@ex.O6 жыл бұрын
He maybe feels some sort of jealousy but the most important feeling is anguish, he has to look over his little brother and at any age that's scary but as a teen it's too much and that what I thing will become to much to handle at some point in the story.

I'm kind of glad that Life is Strange doesn't necessarily give you a way to resolve every conflict or to improve every bad situation you come across. As much as I'd like it if no child in a bad home gets left there, the reality is that in a lot of situations, even if you fell like something is going on, there isn't a lot you can do, which is doubly true if your a kid/teen, and probably even more true when you're on the run. I know the video game trope is that everyone who meats the protagonist either has their life ruined or all their problems solved, but I do like it when a game sometimes just has you pass through someone's life with no way of solving their problems (in the sense that I appreciate the design choice, I do get frustrated sometimes).

LIS 2 Spoilers If you don't let Mushroom outside Daniel does. I agree about Claire. Her emotional state is all over. I think Stephen is more supportive of the boys. I think it is interesting that you give Daniel rules to protect him and his power and with your grandparents they give you rules to protect you that you can follow or not. I think it shapes Daniel on how you follow their rules. If the grandparents want the child in most states they have the option to be guardians to their grandchildren. Yes I've tried telekinesis😀 and it was so sad to see Sean try. Mind reading and future telling too... I just knew the laptop was a trap. Too tempting. I missed the phone too 😂 I think you have to call Lylla in Ep 1 to talk to her in Ep 2. I think it is more Claire scrubbing Karen from their life than Stephen. He seems upset over everything. I think the mom ran away either because of powers or ran away with another man or woman. I think it was sad that Chris's dad told Sean he is aware he is a bad dad to Chris and wonders if Chris would be better without him. I got Chris hit by the car. I had Daniel conceal his powers and didn't think if the repurcussions Maybe if you get the Dad to open up, he will get help, AA or similar, and be a better dad. I feel like Life is Strange 2 is going to start either dividing Sean and Daniel, or uniting them more as brothers depending on what you tell him to do. I chose to make Daniel suppress his powers (with the exception of saving Stephen) and lie to Chris. Now his friend is possibly dead, and Daniel blamed Sean for it. Sooner or later he is going to stop listening to his older brother because he believes Sean is making the wrong decisions, or vice versa, he might end up really looking up to Sean not only as an older brother, but as a guide and mentor helping him navigate his powers and everyday life. Either way I think a bigger catastrophe with Daniel is coming, and Sean's relationship with him is definitely going to be a factor in whether or not you can save him.
@antonyingram6 жыл бұрын
Having played Captain Spirit I *know* Chris's dad isn't a great parent, but I also do feel sorry for him as he's clearly struggling with a situation that's beyond his control. There's not to excuse him for saying the things he said and hitting Chris, but although it's never really made clear, I also don't get the impression he's *always* been a bad parent - just someone emotionally unable to deal with having lost his wife and unfortunately, taking it out on Chris. But II took more of a hands-off approach to all those conversations - I didn't pry too deeply with Chris, and didn't pry too deeply in the car with Chris's dad. He obviously doesn't have the prior knowledge we do as players, and while Sean might get an idea of what was going on in the moments after Chris falls from the treehouse, I didn't get any indication he'd be hyper-aware enough to start delving into their family problems, and more focused on Daniel. But then that all-out focus on Daniel is why I ended up with Chris getting hit by the police car, so that's *clearly* not working out well for me! Other stuff: I'm starting to feel really bad for Lyla, and I think the game may start punishing me somehow for not contacting her (as I've chosen not to at each chance so far). After reading the phone messages in ep1 I actually got the impression Lyla was more interested in Sean than just the jokey tomboyish bff thing they have at the start (certainly more so than Jenn) and Sean's absence is really badly affecting her. She certainly seems too significant a character to just continue ignoring her over five episodes with no repercussions. My big big end-of-story prediction: Daniel will have to make a choice of using his powers to save either Sean or their mother. Since you can't directly influence that choice (because you play as Sean and not Daniel), it will be done as a culmination of the way you've "brought up" Daniel throughout the rest of the game. Maybe a "trolley problem"-style ending is too much like LiS 1, but if it's not all leading up to Daniel using his powers in a true life or death situation then I don't know what it could be...

Jane, the foster system isn't so simple. Living relatives still have to fight for the child (or children) depending on a multitude of factors. It isn't just "oh, your grandparents are still here, so you'll go with them." Its A LOT more complicated than that.
@Raicheru135 жыл бұрын
Good point. There is so much grey area. Relatives can also refuse to take children in. Genetics don't necessarily mean anything. The foster system can also be terrible, so it's reasonable for kids to avoid the system out of fear. Mileage may vary due to state or caseworker, but my friend was in foster care and it was the worst period of time in her younger years.
@setherous5 жыл бұрын
Wow here I am like 10 months late to this comment. But it sometimes is that simple. I know here in the U.S. if a parent with sole custody is deceased they try and find the next of kin to keep them with family. Like if a mother cannot be found the grandparents can be given custody or uncles/ aunts. It's a way to keep kids out of foster care while keeping them in an environment that's less traumatic given they have just lost a parent. It's very quick and then the kids are checked on by a government agency to ensure they are getting the right care and temporary custody is granted almost immediately. Then within a few months time they grant custody to the guardians once proven that the children are well cared for.

Two cents : I live in the greater Philadelphia area. I used to live near a family who had a couple of their own children and a multitude of foster children. The father in the household was a felon, and continued to sell methamphetamine. I don't understand how they allowed it. The family was vocal in the community about enjoying the money they were paid to care for the children. In contrast, I have friends who were eventually adopted by their foster parents and had very happy, loving adoptions and lives. Foster care system is a real coin toss.

I think you missed the racial undertones with the grandparents: they had a bad relationship with their Latino son-in-law, a distant relationship with their Latino grandchildren, they asked questions like "Why did you run?" - Because they're two Latino kids standing over a dead white police officer! Forget foster care, they would be lucky if they got to jail in one piece! And especially from their point of view, they watched a white cop kill their father for no reason! They don't hit you over the head with it, but if you are aware of the racial problems in America (and doubtless in the UK) you see how the cop shooting their father, their reluctance to go to the police, the way they were viewed with suspicion in town, the way their white grandparents responded to them, it's all subtle racism.

As a father of three who will turn 41 on the 16th, there is NO situation in which being verbally or physically abusive to a child (or woman) is forgivable for me. I don’t care what is going on in your life, you don’t take it out on the kids. Before I turned 30 I was a Captain in a private security firm. At 31 I had a stroke, followed by four heart surgeries. I’m only now beginning to get truly mobile again. It’s frustrating. It sucks. Some days I want to give up. But my children rarely know it. What’s going on with them is what’s important. When you become a father you lose the right to put your wellbeing first. You get to soldier up and deal. Captain what’s his face’s old man needs a good poke in the nose. And those grandparents... Grandparents are not obligated to take their grandkids. Sean doesn't know them. If you confess the power to Stephen, he does give Sean a pat on the back. I expected Brody's blog to be terrible! If you confront Charles directly, which you can only do if Chris confesses that dad hits him while drunk, Charles will suggest that he will send Chris to Emily's parent's house (not that it's clear he won't just grab some whiskey and beat Chris instead). ETA: I felt very different about the grandparents... Mostly because my mom's family is exactly like them. They're blue blooded and cold, but not unloving. I never thought they'd turn us in after the first night. If I needed shielding from the cops in my life I'd rather have my blue blooded grandparents than the warm loving ones that for all their hugs and kisses don't have the foggiest notion how to lay down the rules I need to hear to not immediately call Lyla. ETA2: Lyla is doing a lot better in Ep2 if you called her in Ep1. ETA3: It's hard for me to see what valid excuse there can be for mom to sever all contact with Sean and Daniel. I'm trying to keep an open mind, but it's really hard to live in Sean's head and understand it.

She was a good friend and a fan favorite - I hope she plays a major role later on! Someday, I hope we learn what was up with that plane in Ep1! I hope we get to Mexico sooner rather than later. Puerto Lobos is on the east coast so there's still a ways to travel after crossing the border. Whatever's there, has got to be a more interesting game setting than grandma's house or a christmas tree lot! (Would be cool to meet their grandparents on Esteban's side though) I don't know what to think about the "mom with powers" thing, since this is the same universe as LiS1. So, did Vanessa and/or Ryan Caulfield have powers? Finally - I hope the wait won't be any longer than for this episode, and with no save-file-eating bugs.

So... I somehow managed to get the "Chris gets hit by a car" ending, and I think this is how I got it. In Episode 1, I chose to steal camping supplies from the gas station after Daniel had used his powers on the owner. This apparently makes Daniel more unpredictable, and I actually asked him to stop lying to Chris in Episode 2, but he decides not to. I also don't ask Daniel to use his powers to move the cupboard off of Stephen, meaning Daniel chooses not to move the car himself when its driving at Chris. SO not only does Chris get hit by a car, Daniel blames himself and was too sad to enjoy the yo-yo I stole and wooden beaver I spent most of my money on. I literally got the worst ending to episode 2.

As someone who has never played these games but thoroughly enjoys watching your videos on them, I get the impression that these games (particularly this episode) are teaching the player a lesson of disappointment and helplessness. The grandparents won't always be warmhearted and loving parental figures that provide the solution, you won't always be able to save your new friend from his abusive father, sometimes you're the side-character in your brothers story, and sometimes you can't save your new puppy from being eaten by a couger/mountain lion. The game teaches you lessons about loss and failure and how you can't always repair or prevent the damage done like in most games, and that subversion of expectations and tropes is what makes this series special.

I don't think I've ever seen Luke lose it like Ellen usually does, and over a comment about condoms. His face just got so red there at the end. As far as the path Sean and Daniel take, they are never in the midwest, but are traveling down the west coast of the US (so he hasn't actually carried the condom across the midwest). Also, I think the lukewarm reception given by the grandparents is just another subtle poke at covert racism in the US. If Sean and Daniel's father weren't latino, they would have likely been far more welcoming. And just in case you aren't aware, marijuana is legal in Washington, Oregon, and California, so ending up on a marijuana farm would not be so unusual (though I don't think there would be any growing in December or January, even in California, unless it were an indoor operation).

I kind of disagree about Chris’ dad. I get what you’re but I get it. Abusive relationships aren’t black and white it’s complicated and the victim still loves the abuser and the abuser still loves the victim even if it is toxic, I know as I’ve been in one. I guessed all of Chris’ toys right and e told me his dad got drunk a lot and when he does he gets angry so when I was in the car I had the option to tell him to get help and I did. I see your point of view as well but I think they were trying to say that toxic and abusive relationships are extremely complicated. I do think that Chris should probably go and live with someone else like his Grandparents at least until his dad is in a fit state to raise him.

I feel like my playthrough for Captain Spirit was really different to most; mostly because I went out straight away when he called, but through the episode he seemed much nicer to Chris and playful (the milk and the foam gun come to mind), and then the snap came at the end. I got the impression he was a nice guy and a good father who had been destroyed by this awful event, but that there was still some part of his old self still there. I didn't manage to get him to open up, but on my master playthrough, I'm going to and I hope there can be some sort of resolution.

As a foster parent, I do know that the foster system here in the U.S. works differently from state to state. A constant, though, is that when the child services is looking at who to place children, most do all they can to keep siblings together, if possible. They also will approach other family members, with a cursory investigation to make sure that the relatives are not a worse situation, than that the children are leaving. Relatives do have the option to refuse to take the children, though. This could be indicative that the boys knew that their grandparents would refuse, if asked, instead of actually showing up.

I’ve never disliked a child more than I’ve disliked Daniel. Regardless of his age, he still should have some speck of understanding the severity of him and his brother’s situation. Yet and still he continuously makes dangerous decisions that affect *everyone* around him. And it’s not just silly little “oh the kid is playing with sharp objects” stuff. It’s “I know I’m on the run but let me just go out in public and risk putting my entire family in danger because I miss my friends”. I don’t care what anyone says, you can say “he’s just a kid”, at the end of the day, he’s still remarkably selfish as a person. And if the game’s purpose is partially raising Daniel properly with everything going on, you should be allowed to reprimand him for any selfish behavior (as you do with kids) but at best your options are Sean is regretful but aloof towards it all and your worst are Sean blows a fuse at Daniel. There’s no real or efficient discipline that ever gets handed to Daniel for anything he does cause “he’s a kid” but then he does dumb things like expose himself and Sean and break literally every rule presented in front of him. And I know some people really wanted to find out about the mom and the plot demands it or whatever, I still think it’s incredibly awful of Daniel to insist go into his mother’s room. But not because he doesn’t deserve it, I get that a kid who doesn’t know his mom would want that, but Sean clearly doesn’t want anything to do with her. Daniel kinda forces Sean to confront things he’s already tried to move past and bury and I think that’s just another stitch in a full string of decisions Sean has to make against his own best interests because Daniel requests. To me, if this is a story about two brothers (and not father and son, where in parents should put the children first), Daniel should be equally giving as Sean, because even though Sean needs to take care of him, they should have each other’s’ backs. But I just ranted about a fictional 9-year old so who’s really the idiot here?

So, I played episode 2 because of the pre-order and it has also stated that my choices werent comparable. My original ending was Chris getting hit by the car, because I didnt have his trust, and I told Daniel to keep the secret. But I went back, got Chris's trust & open up, told Daniel to tell the truth & talked to the dad. This lead to the ending where chris still jumps out but Daniel takes action. One thing that I found was strange, was before it said that I had OVERALL, REPRESSED Daniel's powers! When in fact, I never repressed his powers until there was the option to prank the guy in the market. I decided to leave it alone...but for some reason the game took that and felt like it scrapped all the times I encouraged him. I've also never lied to Daniel & I only lied to the dad about going out? Which is weird. Idk how the game mechanics are working but idk it's strange how one odd choice like those can DRASTICALLY change the outcome. Idk if anyone else is experiencing this or feeling the same way? I'm mega confused. Also, I have a theory that Steven knows something about Daniel's powers. When he talks to Sean, you'd expect him to be more confused and asking questions but he seems like he's seen it before? Maybe it's a rare gene that went from the Mom to Daniel? He says to not let Claire know due to her beliefs. Is this why the mom ran away? Is this why they( more Claire) keeps the room locked?

I'll start by paraphrasing my comments from Eurogamer’s videos on episode 2: I was kind of cold on this episode at first, feeling like I'd been railroaded to an unreasonable degree. As soon as I saw the 'outcomes' screen at the end, though, I immediately reflected on how much difference all my small actions and choices had made. From that moment, everything felt heavy with responsibility and consequence again. I'm equal parts excited and apprehensive about where things will go from here. Hearing about other players’ experiences really hammers home how much all those small decisions add up. For instance, I haven’t been perfect at teaching Daniel the importance of obedience and honesty, but I've been pretty consistent about doing what’s ultimately right. So Daniel disregarded Sean’s instruction to tell Chris the truth, but then used his power to save Chris from the police car. So Chris is left with the misapprehension that he’s got superpowers, which could backfire spectacularly, but on the other hand he’s met new people he liked, and had an amazing adventure. You might not get to save him from living with his Dad, but at least you get to brighten his world, which might help to give him hope for the future. Small actions with bigger consequences down the line. For now, I don't regret calling Lyla both times I had the chance, though I can't help but feel the consequences might snowball in the long run. She's such an interesting character, even though her last two appearances have both been fraught telephone calls. I can’t help suspecting - or hoping - that her inevitable reunion with Sean may develop into a possible romance. Episode 3, dire prediction: Anyone who let Daniel kill the cougar will find a news report about a group of hikers being terrorised by a family of starving mountain lions. Turns out that violence begets violence, you monster, and depriving that family of their mother and their winter morsel forced them further afield in a desperate search for food. Episode 3, less dire prediction: I now doubt that Karen was responsible for the tragic death of Chris' mum, due to the chronology, but I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of that story. I think we'll learn more and maybe find some answers. I also suspect we might learn whether Karen had any connection to Sera, linking her to goings-on in Arcadia Bay in the original LiS. I agree with Jane about Chekhov’s condom. It’s time will surely come, if you’ll pardon the expression. Same with the pipe and flash drive Sean’s also been lugging around in his bag this whole time. Whatever will happen, I’m looking forward to episode 3, as much as I’m looking forward to Jane and Luke’s commentary. ...And as for superpowers I tried to unlock as a lad: psychokinesis. It'd be so useful - flight, first aid, building or demolishing structures, starting or stopping vehicles, igniting or extinguishing fires, exploring the ocean in a mobile air pocket. Depending how it's applied, it could be just about the most versatile superpower available. Or not available, as it turns out.

You sort of gave me a slightly dishonourable mention last time over the Rachel Amber mum thing, and now Jane's starting to draw the same parallels I did :P That letter's quite a kick in the teeth for that theory though; it seems like quite a significant part of the boys' emotional story, and I can't really fathom what would be there instead for people who didn't save her in BtS outside of what we hear in episode one. Also I would always do the Dragonball energy thing when I went to the toilet as a child. I felt like the regular practice might help.
