As many of you know, Shaun and I have an AMAZING son named #Daxton! We adopted Dax into our family in 2008, and have since learned that he has autism. Today, we are answering some of your questions regarding #autism to the best of our ability, based on our own personal journey with Daxton.
✅ Are you curious about how we raised our 6 kids in this WILD digital world??? Pre-order my NEW BOOK called "Viral Parenting" HERE! www.cutegirlsha...
To read about Daxton's Adoption Story (from the beginning), grab some tissues and click HERE! www.cutegirlsha...
My Feelings Box For Kids: www.feelingmag...
We are not doctors or health care professionals of any sort. We simply want to be super raw and honest with you guys about this huge, impactful part of our lives. With this platform, we have been given an amazing opportunity to educate, and share experiences about a topic that affects so many people. Any time that we hear families openly talking about their personal journey with a loved one with ADHD and autism, we always end up feeling very connected, and understood.
We have learned SO much just from raising Daxton. He is such an incredible young man, and has given us a whole new perspective on patience, as well as compassion. Being his mom has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life, but also one of the most rewarding. We have come across so many spectacular people who have helped us along the way, and given us so much inspiration. We continue to learn new things every day, and we are constantly growing as people because of Daxton. We are so lucky to have our little handsome man in our lives! ❤️
Autism does not define Daxton. His talents and skills are often far superior to ours. We tell him it’s like his super power.
While it has been challenging for us to adapt our parenting to accommodate how his mind works, we will do absolutely anything we can to give him the BEST chance to succeed in his dreams and goals for his life.

I am a psychology major. I think it is very important that you are proud and open about autism. Autism does not define Dax, it is just one of the unique parts of him! He is a smart, handsome little guy, and very loved by you guys. He will continue to grow and be an amazing addition to this the world. Keep on keeping on through the hard times, and embrace the good times. You two are doing wonderful.

I have autism, i still call it aspergers, i was diagnosed as an adult 8 years ago because no one could figure it out "what was wrong with me". But autism isn't a mental illness like you put it in with bipolar. It's just how your brain is wired. the older i get the better it gets because I am able to figure out how to cope with sensory input on my own and other things.

i have a brother who’s autistic, and all of us are adopted from korea (there’s 5 of us). i’m gonna be honest.. it’s hard living with him! i was in the same class as him for 2 years, and he was treated very different than the other students. he wasn’t able to write, so he used an ipad to write and read. lots of the other kids would bully him, and i would stand up for him even though he was soo mean to me at home, but he can’t control it. my parents realized this and my mom created a school for kids who’re dyslexic, have adhd, anxiety, etc. he’s doing much better today even though he is very mean to me and he can’t control his impulses which can be very scary

grace and lydia I have a daughter with Asperger’s and a son that does not. My daughter created a lot of chaos and strife in our house. She doesn’t understand why her brother is angry with her. Well, he’s not so angry now that he’s old enough to understand (he’s 17 and she just turned 21) but he also doesn’t want to be around her. It breaks my heart, but I understand, she is hard to love. She also has ADHD and I’ve voluntarily made a desk for her bc she has to move around. So I made it adjustable for her. She always wants me to hold her hand and sit with her while she does her work. If Daxton likes to move around and be physical I don't know if you guys go to a gym but that is what I do and it has helped me so much with my ADHD! I can now Focus for at least an hour and a half in one sitting versus only 15 minutes. At one point my tutor on my phone had recorded like the steps of what I need to do to get my homework started. Like she had me set a timer on my watch for a certain amount of time and I had to stick to it! And there were some subjects that because of my lack and inability to focus like barely passing college algebra, she would not allow me to listen to music while doing math. She was the best person on Earth! She still is I don't get to see her very much but she is an amazing person! Until I got to college I never really got the help that I needed until I met her and she helps me so much along the way. Whether it was emotional or academic it just it varied depending on what was happening in that moment. Now I also go to therapy to express my emotions and basically learn how to cope and that has helped me tremendously!

When I saw the video I was really concerned at first but then I watched it and realized there was nothing to be concerned about!! The fact that Daxton has autism doesn't change my opinion about him. Honestly I have never noticed anything that would assume the fact that he has special needs. What I have noticed is that he is a very smart little boy. I think he is just as incredible as any other child and that is the truth. Now that I know that he has autism, I just think he is extra special and smart as before and, like he has said in previous vidoes, if he wants to become an astronaut, he can. As a big sister in an Autism family (2 children and one parent with Autism, and the other two children and parent with Sensory Processing Disorder) I gotta say right on, y’all. You are doing so much to make sure Dax succeeds and it shows!! Autism can throw a lot of hurdles at you and when it’s someone you really love, it can be incredibly stressful. But it’s also an incredible experience for growth for everyone involved. I’m so glad that you have gotten to a better place for Dax and yourselves, and that he has an incredible family as a support system. Keep doing what’s best for your family, and don’t let judgement eat at you. As the saying goes, if you’ve met one child with Autism, congrats! You’ve met one child with Autism! Every person with the diagnosis is a unique individual with different needs. Much love from my Autism family to yours 💜

This makes me so happy; I am 19 and I was diagnosed with ADHD at age 7 and have level 1 Austim. I have an IEP. And I can tell you that it gets easier when they find something they love and learns to deal with the episodes themselves. I also don't like being told I had a temper tantrum I like to call them episodes because I get embarrassed when other people call them that.

Dax is always so kind in your videos and it is clear that he loves his family. I’m glad he found his way to you! I work for a company that does in home ABA Therapy specializing in autism and your outlook is so positive on his diagnosis and progress. I love seeing success stories that seem minor to neurotypical families and I look forward to seeing how Dax continues to meet personal goals! As a parent, we all struggle with wondering if we are doing the best we can for our children and from your video it seems as if you two have become his best advocates. Kudos for continuing to look for answers and best of luck. Thank you for sharing, and any future successes you choose to share!!

You guys are role models online, I'm sure a lot of young kids will be watching this, and I think it may be through watching family vlogs that I garnered a great respect for my parents and didn't have as much of a teen rebellious stage.

You guys are awesome parents of wonderful children! I always wondered what the reason was that you moved from here (Utah) to Texas. I agree with you that this has all been meant to be, for you guys to be his parents! Dax reminds me a little bit of my youngest brother, who was born with only half of his brain developed. My brother has a mind like you wouldn’t believe! He can remember things that happened in the past that none of the rest of us ever remember. If we need to know a date of when something occurred, we ask him and he almost always will know the date and sometimes the time as well. He doesn’t have use of his right arm and his right leg is smaller than the left, but he is stronger than most people. Never challenge him to an arm wrestle! You will lose! ☺️ It’s just amazing how children that have these kind of challenges are blessed with amazing abilities. Even though it can be challenging for families at times, we are actually very blessed that Heavenly Father gives them to us! Obviously, Dax was meant to be a part of your family! And I am so thankful that we also have my brother. I think having the Gospel in our lives definitely helps us get through the hard times. I wouldn’t have it any other way! 🥰 Thanks guys for sharing this with us.

Omg this story really touched my heart. My brother has a very similar story. I am so sorry about how hard it’s been for you. But I promise it does get better. My brother was born when my mom was 24 weeks pregnant and he had a 25% chance of survival. And thank god that he made it though. After he got home from the hospital, he had very similar characteristics to Daxton, with other health issues. I love that your family is positive but still acknowledges the struggles in life. My brother was also non verbal, and now he is speaking more clearly but still isn’t fully verbal. He also is very smart and even thought he learns differently he is able to take high school level computer science classes and he is in the 8th grade. If I could give you all any advice(PLEASE don’t think I am trying to tell you how to parent Dax), maybe try to dig deeper into his interests(If you haven’t already) And have talks with him about what his dreams are. My brother wants to be a Aerospace Engineering Data Analyst at NASA(Yes the longest title in the world). So we decorated with outer space decorations and posters. And because of it he was more motivated to sleep because he always wanted to be in his room. Lots of kids with ADHD/Autism and or learning disorders, learn differently but are very good at one area and are smarter then the average person in that area. For my brother that was Computer Science. Lots of love ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

My older cousin has autism and is hands down the sweetest person I know. He doesn’t like hugs from most people, but will hug his sister at any random moment and says he loves her. He has a small group of friends but is very close to them. Sadly, this last school year has been difficult, because his girlfriend broke up with him this last summer. He respected her decision but says he will never find someone else to love him. Thank you so much for this video, everyone should be aware of autism. :)

I’ve become a better person because of it and he really kinda saved my family. He requires the attention of a 1 year old 24/7 with his attention seeking his allergy’s of gluten, dairy, and food dye plus his medicine it’s a lotttt. Am almost 13 and that might seem young but I’ve learned so much more than any human could possibly learn.

Mindy, my brother was diagnosed with autism when he was 2. Since then, our life went crazy, for the better. We’re constantly trying to figure out what he’s doing or why. He is a verbal, crazy happy kid. He has aspergers. My brother is the reason that I want to work in special education. There is no reason to struggle. You guys are doing amazing. One thing you can try and do is find a class for you guys to help understand who Dax is and what he wants.

I am tearing up watching this because you are speaking a language so many of us know, and feel. I am not a dr, but I am married to a Clinical Psychologist, and his advice for me is 1) don’t look too far down the future, because we love our kids, and we tend to catastrophize the future (will he be homeless? Will he fall in love? Will he ever be self-sufficient?). Our other “phrase” is “we deal with today, and we don’t borrow trouble from tomorrow BUT (in Canada)there are special bank account you can set up to help your child in the future. Seriously, my biggest fear is what happens when we aren’t here? I don’t want my oldest to be “burden” and there is no way I can crawl out of the grave to protect him. (My husband would tell me right now “he is goi g to be fine”😜) There is a mourning, and that is normal and then there is acceptance, and then there is living, and letting him make mistakes on his own, but at a different rate than our other child. Honestly, you could do a whole channel for parents, siblings, aunts Uncles, school situations on dealing with Learning and intellectually differently-abled or different learning styles. I really dislike the term disabled, because know one, not even the experts, can predict the future. My son was diagnosed NVLD (it is not Autism but similar, and it is a spectrum diagnosis) but I am also NVLD, and I growing up School was hard for me, but I had parents support (I am 47 years old, so there was no accommodations or modifications. I did repeat grade 9 (best and hardest choice my parents made), I have two University degrees: BA and BEd, and now work privately helping kids who learn differently. And I am quirky as heck, and have very close friends and family is my everything. I want to tell you, some days I don’t believe it, but if my life is an example, everything will be ok.

I was diagnosed with aspergers/pdd-nos (back before it all fell under autism spectrum disorder). I went through speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and ABA. I was told in pre school that I wouldn’t go to a normal school. Sometimes I still deal with anxiety and feel like I’m behind. But I’m 24 now, I just got married and I’m working on my PhD in biomedical engineering. My work deals with data science and analysis with autism spectrum disorder. We’re working on early diagnosis with blood measurements and I wanted to let you know that he’s got a bright future! You guys are great parents and he’s gonna do great things! He has a unique ability he might not have had otherwise.

I’m so happy to see you open up about it and not be ashamed. My brother has about a level 3 Autism and he’s 12. It’s comforting to know you aren’t alone, that there are others who go through the same struggle. There’s no guide book or right way for Autism. Each case is so different, that’s why it’s so hard to diagnose. I’m so happy that you aren’t the parents who try to “cure” their child, that you love him and accept him the way he is.

At my school we have a program called zLinks. It is a peer to peer program. Everyone who is involved with it gets to work with kids with Down syndrome, ASD, Austism, etc. I am in my first year in the programs as a sophomore, and this year I am working with a girl with autism so seeing this video is awesome to hear experiences from others from the beginning, but one thing I did connect was that your day revolves around how they are doing. There will be days when she has a bad day and so it just affects the rest of her day or maybe even week and you have to work around it.
