The Kabardian (or mountain) horse breed (Circassian - adyghesh) is one of the oldest aboriginal horse-harness breeds. It is included in all world reference books on horse breeding.
The history of the Adyghe people is closely connected with the history of the creation, use and improvement of the Kabardian horse breed, which has become widely known far beyond the borders of the Caucasus.
By the 16th century, the fame of the incredibly hardy and frisky Kabardian horses had spread far beyond the Caucasus. There were legends about Circassian horses in both Western Asia and Eastern Europe. Merchants and aristocrats from these regions paid big money for a Kabardian horse. Especially massively these animals were bought up by the Crimean and Turkish nobility.
The breed was formed in conditions of keeping all year round in the herd. In summer, in open mountain pastures, and in winter, it was kept in the foothills and on the plains, only feeding it with hay and grain. The Kabardian horse breed has long been highly valued as a fighting breed. They are capable of covering huge distances, while they were never shod, and even in large numbers they could not give out the movement of troops with the sound of horseshoes.
The legend of the Circassian people (Circassians, Circassians and Kabardians belong to the Circassians) says that the ancestor of the Circassian horse (the progenitor of the Kabardian breed) was the mythical stallion of the Alps, who came to people from the foamy waves of the Black Sea.
