I'm having a problem with cow and buffalo hides. The leather turns out very stiff, and curls on edges. I oil the hides before I tumble them, but as they dry they get hard. I've only done about 6 big hides so far, but I want some soft rugs of both cow and buffalo but can't get them to be soft and flexible.

Oil them more. Most thick skin requires multiple oilings. Also, break them while drying (or tumble dry them)

Wow. I like your set up. How did you start (how did you acquire the machinery...and where from)? How long have you done it? Where do you get your tannin from?

This is all so fascinating. I tan smaller animals, mainly rabbits, and have done some sheepskins. But I would love to be able to process the larger stuff.. the problem of course is I have no equipment to do it other then a fleshing knife, so it would be way too much physical work. How did you get into the hide tanning business?

Very interesting. It does look like a lot of work - I guess that's why it costs so much to have one tanned. Enjoyed the video! Thanks for sharin!

Nice video. What is the difference between this large flesher and the 12 inch that you use in another video located behind you? Also do you have to adjust the machine for different type of skin? thanks

the 72 inch is just for fleshing hides, the 12 inch is called a shaver, it actually thins the skin, the flesher has set bolts to adjust for pressure and tension, the 12 inch uses a foot pedal and is adjusted by how hard you press down.

I’m looking for a pumice wheel or some type of wheel to thin out really thick capes for soft tan, can you give me information on this?

I am surprised that you don't use wood ash to dehair, wood ash only take 36 days to dehair.

Quick question, do you use a kicker box? Or how do you break your hides?

I had a kicker years ago, now I use a staking machine for my flat hides
