Love this video! It's really well done, straight to the point, sincere and enjoyable! Visual merchandising is something I would love to do, and thanks to this video I have a better idea what I'm getting myself into. You mentioned something about creating an atmosphere for when a customer walks in, are in charge of scents and music too?

Good Job and Keep up the good work.

this video was very helpful!!! i just love your enthusiasm and your passion for your job. I'm currently a stylist vendor for Macys special events in south/central Florida..and i must say you work for an amazing company. I love the trust they instill in us when they call us in to style shows for them. your video has really helped me a lot as I have a second interview for a visual merchandising opportunity. I'm so excited! I love creating stories through styling..its such an amazing feeling, especially when you can enhance someones style by placing them in looks they never would have tried, had I not taken them out of their comfort zone. I love your videos, and i just followed you on instagram. you will most definitely get to where you are going...and I guarantee you will be way past in love with it! :-)

I now want to focus on Visual Merchandising only! What companies should I start to look? I absolutely need to exercise my creative side more so than I'm allowed to now.

hi there, I've worked in visual merchandising with children's wear and also children's confectionary. I'm looking to progress into this further as I'm still at the beginning. In my confectionary job my manager and area manager decided on displays to buy in and I would set it up but I'm curious as to how much power do you have in buying the stuff for the displays? Do you approach your manager with a concept and then buy in graphics and wallpaper etc or do you get it sent to you as a planogram? Can you propose what wallpaper or vinyl you want to buy for the stores display? one more question - do you take a portfolio with you on interview? I'm being advised it's just cv but I think a portfolio is needed. many thanks :)
@missmariyaxo9 жыл бұрын
+Kayleigh Akester I would say bring a portfolio so they could really see your creative skills (: Since Macy's is such a big company, they need all of their stores to look similar so for big displays we got sent the stuff for the displays. But when we worked in individual "shops" we sometimes were able to get some of our own decor.

I've been working in retail for awhile now and like Jennifer below I realized my favorite tasks were putting together the displays. I don't have much money since I already went to a few years of college and am paying back loans (alas, no degree to speak of), but I found out SNHU does online courses for fashion merchandising, which includes marketing, graphic design, and business classes too! I can't afford to move to NYC for FIT so I'm hoping this works out... I really love doing this and wish I could be taken seriously instead of laughed off by my coworkers for wanting to re-do the displays again. >.< Thank you so much for making this video; I immediately went to your instagram to look at more photographs for inspiration!
@missmariyaxo10 жыл бұрын
I hope my instagram offered some good inspiration (: I will be posting more photo's daily! I would suggest just get involved in your store displays as much as possible, or volunteer at events helping with decor and be sure to take pictures of it to start building your portfolio! (:

Hey, I'm trying to get into visual merchandising now. I work at F21 & even though they did not hire me as a visual I still help out the visuals on a daily basis just to get experience on it. Other than styling I have no experience on visual, Do you think if I applied somewhere else would they want me to have experience or would they train me a little first?
@missmariyaxo10 жыл бұрын
Hi! A lot of companies are hiring right now for season holiday visual trimmers! That would be a great way to get your foot in the door. & as for your question- it depends on the company. A lot of campaniles prefer to hire people with about 2 years experience, but some could train you first!

I am super excited, I have done visual merchandising in past jobs but I have never been a visual merchandiser, I have a degree in fashion retail and management from The Art Institute of Atlanta. I was wondering how was the interview process?
@missmariyaxo9 жыл бұрын
Samatra Gibson You go through a basic interview process with general interview questions and then questions regarding how you work on artistic projects and how you work with on a team. I suggest bringing a portfolio or something that you can show off your creative skills. They want someone who wants to be there- so be excited!

Great stuff Maria!...I am Rahul from Mumbai....your video has helped me prepare for my MBA exams...How do you coordinate with merchandisers during the launch of a new product? How long does it take to set up a visual merchandise plan for a new or upcoming product?
@missmariyaxo10 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you! We have "planning meetings" with the merchandisers' talking about what is coming up in the next few weeks and what days we will come together to work on certain projects. To set up a visual plan could take a few hours and to actually execute it could take from a couple of hours to a few days. It just depends on how big the launch is, if there needs to be a floor move, how much collateral, etc. Hope this information helps!

I used to be a sales associate at TJ Maxx, and I LOVED the days they told me to change out features. Unfortunately, my full-time position now as a front end coordinator doesn't allow me out on the floor since I'm in charge of the front end. :( It was really awesome to come back to the features I made in a few hours and it was all sold. Maybe some day I can do that again as a full-time associate with TJ Maxx or somewhere else.

Hey maria! Quite a helpful video, I must say. :) Well.. I am from India, planning to be a visual merchandiser. I hav some questions, if u could plz answer them. Is it necessary to hav a certain qualification in visual merchandising to be a visual merchandiser? Are online courses worth doing? Do they have any value? If yes, do u have any idea about such courses in V.M.? Expecting a reply soon. All the best for ur future, keep up d good work!! :) (y)
@missmariyaxo10 жыл бұрын
Personally, I got an associates degree in Visual Communications which helped me out a lot in my job. To start out, you don't necessarily need to have certain qualifications (but it's good to know basic skills/tasks)...but you might need some to move up the ladder. I went to a fashion school called FIDM for my degree, but I do not know of any good ones aside to FIDM courses. Thanks for your question, hope this helps (:
