Okay but the last question! I’m AfricanAmerican as well, family from the south and have been wanting to change my last name so bad🥺. My grandfather hated the scar of his last name too but died before he could change it. I always wonder if it’s permissible to change a last name given to you if the person isn’t your father. But as the descendant of the slave we now bear the name our father was given so it’s so confusing! Sigh.

It was imposed on the conquered regions of West Africa via the Arab Invasion and the Arab Slave Trade which predates the Atlantic Slave Trade (i.e., our ancestors were forced to convert to Islam via violence or the threat of enslavement).
