I've always wanted to film this but just assumed the sparks would be too dim to really see with the lighting required for high speed. Really cool footage! Edit: Oh, and also I had no idea this was triboluminescence! I thought it was peizoelectric arcing

Greetings fellow soundy! My main trick for these videos is reverb for daaays & a lot of pitching. I do spend a lot of time choosing the right sounds and being as meticulous as possible with sync when I can--which I actually wasn't able to do as neurotically as usual for these but luckily no one seems to have noticed (shhh).

Kai Widman I admire the sounds during that video too. Sound creators for Films are people you would never think of, when you think of the production of a movie, but without them, every movie would be boring. If you'd really record the sounds during the shot and replayed them so slow, you would probably not be able to hear them, since the sound gets deeper when played slowly (sound waves stretched or something like this).

@@MrShakamuni01 not really a spark, it's crystaline fracturing exciting electrons that were formerly bound to a partner. You can get the same by striking quartz crystals together, rubbing them together, etc. Cellophane tape unrolling also generates the phenomena, as well as x-rays sufficient to actually x-ray a researcher's finger in a vacuum chamber. Electrons are very excitable things.

In the middle of the video, I was thinking... WOW this guy has an AMAZING Audio Engineer. These sounds are incredibly well done. And I'm so happy that you explained this at the end so that others can know that there is an effort is put into these videos beyond what meets the eye. Most videographers these days have audio engineers behind the scenes bringing to life every detailed frame that our eyes see. Such an underrated job. We love you Audio Engineers!! PS. As usual, Destin your video is amazing! I absolutely love lightning in slow motion!! I had never heard of Triboluminescence before. You earned my subscription to this channel about 5 seconds in as I thought to myself "Why in the world am I not already subscribed here?" Keep up the amazing content and thank you! Ok Destin, not sure if you are going to read this but: There was a video about Scotch tape being ripped in a vacuum, that caused both Triboluminescence, as well as X-rays. Not just a little bit of x-rays... Enough to develop film. It was significant. (but required a near perfect vacuum) It looked IDENTICAL to these lifesavers, and the theory behind that is that scotch tape isn't a physical bond, but a chemical bond that when ripped apart, releases energy in the form of light and radiation. I would LOVE to know if this would be the same result? Do you have a way of measuring x-ray radiation? Science!!!

The part that fascinated me the most was that during one frame around 4:31 you could see the blue glow beginning to spread before the pellet has actually struck the candy. At least, it appears that way with the streak of the pellet visible to the right of the lifesaver. I wonder if the shock wave travelling in front of the pellet, as it moves through the air, is creating enough stress to start shattering the lifesaver. If that's the case, couldn't you just fire a bullet past it but close enough for the shock wave to shatter it?
@Overmann55
@Overmann55 6 жыл бұрын
I believe it was the force traveling through the lifesaver from the front part being opened up - as if a wedge (the pellet) was driven in and forcing the part in front of the pellet to separate. Maybe?

Do high speed cameras have rolling shutters? Enough that, if the right part of the frame were captured first, the bullet would have moved ahead by the time it started capturing the impact point?

Watching the sparks appear primarily along the fracture lines, I immediately thought of the reports of "earthquake lights" reported by many witnesses in areas that have suffered earthquakes. I am guessing it's the same effect, only on a much larger scale, as energy is released at the moment of fracture. Great videos!

Not a scientist but it think what happened there was the bullet was traveling faster then the camera was recording, so when they went frame by frame to slow the already recorded video down more the bullet got blurred and stretched. Kinda like if you swing a glow stick on a string in a circle it looks like it makes a solid ring of light, same idea of blurring.

@karim lavji I'm not so sure about it. Light is fotons after all, and even when they don't have mass, they do have electrical charge. What I assume is that there is so low electrical charge you wouldn't feel anything, or the "crush" you make isn't enough to make them. I'm curious about it, if it releases the charge because they have an electrical charge from the beginning, or because of friction.

I remember this from Outdoor Ed in the early 80's. This is an old trick that they have stopped doing at what is now referred to as "Science Camp". I had to share this trick with my daughter who just returned. Kids love it!

One thing that I feel is very rare and that I really appreciate is that he talks about hoping to EARN your subscription and he says “if you WANNA subscribe to the channel” He’s not being click-baity or begging for subs or demanding that we subscribe or ‘hit a certain amount of likes’. I feel like that’s an indication of good character that’s very absent in youtubers these days. One of the reasons I’ll always be a fan!

i'd take a massive pile of candy all going off at once to generate enough of a spark to light something. It's bright, but the actual voltage is in the picovolt range.

That's how I remembered it as well. It had to be wintergreen. We would chomp down on one while looking in the bathroom mirror with the light off. You had to keep your mouth open of course in order to see it. It was definitely spooking looking.

Destin, you forgot to add the sub button at the end. Also, in all the slo-mo shots, the candy broke at exactly the place where the "lightning" passed through...so my question is did you find a shot in which the "lightning" passed through a point but did not break? edit: Sub button is there now

Osama Rana the light is at places where it breaks. its not that it breaks where the light is.
@OsamaRana
@OsamaRana 7 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean, but the light appears before the crack, so to me it seems like the sparks are...almost weakening the candy, making it susceptible to breakage. Does that make sense?
@arjen4120
@arjen4120 7 жыл бұрын
Osama Rana i see why you would think that but it might just be that the crack has already happened and that you see the light at the same time as that it cracks. And that you only notice the crack after the light

Maybe ... the minimum ignition energy of a hydrogen-air mixture is a scant 0.019 mJ, which I think is less than you can even feel, at least readily. Casual Googling has not revealed how much energy is liberated in this case. TL isn't that well understood ... it quite likely involves the movement of electrons, but whether they are moving between orbitals or between larger discrete particles I'm not sure. It would definitely be interesting to see this performed in a carefully controlled hydrogen atmosphere.

Why is it blue? Is it just the amount of energy?
@soylentgreenb
@soylentgreenb 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, but it is not well understood. Unrolling scotch tape will also generate a blue glow (also triboluminscence), but in a vacuum you will get x-rays. Quite a lot of them. Enough to make an x-ray image.
