That’s right in the Caravan we have a shower come toilet but never use it. Just three different soft facecloths for the body . Using a special separate collapsible bowl. We try and avoid using Wet Wipes in the car in order to save the Environment. Instead we have a double little pouch with a facecloth in one of the sides and a towel in the other side - it’s waterproof.

Love the hot flannel method. With a little rosemary oil added, brilliantly invigorating. Thanks for the reminder, Ken. I'm not keen on the 'must shower every day brigade', especially people of my generation who were brought up on cat-licks, strip washes and one weekly bath. They must feel they're very dirty.

@@LifeistooshortCK I recommend Pure Essential Lavender Oil. Apart from Tea Tree it’s the only essential oil you can put directly on the skin. Essential oils are very strong and can burn.. in a full bath of water you only use 12-15 drops so do be careful with a small amount of water when using other oils. Lavender oil is also anti bacterial. Evaporated it kills bugs in the air and regulates your sleep rhythms. A drop on your pillow or temples works wonders. Finally a drop or two dripped onto a wound kills bacteria and promotes healing, you’ll be amazed at how quickly it heals without scarring. It really is magic in a bottle..you should never be without it! PS: Add some to a homemade cleaning solution with bicarbonate, clean your skirting boards with it and you won’t get any spiders 🕷

Great demo Ken! We did the same travelling around Oz, but we used a bit of goat organic soap and occasionally an outside tap in a park or BBQ area to wash hair. Our skin was never better. Sadly today we are all conditioned to think being clean is to over wash and use chemicals on our bodies.

This took me back, Ken. Around 1953 my family moved from a dank, gas lit stone tenement with a mud play area to a brand new 3 bedroomed house, with an indoor bathroom and a large garden bordered by a playing park with 2 football pitches and 2 for hockey. I can honestly smell the freshly painted surfaces and timber floorboards as we moved in. After which other relatives would visit us on different nights of the week to have their weekly bath. Fridays and Saturdays were busy. Ah, the good old days. Thanks for the memory.

My husband and I used to drive an 18 wheeler here in the states (A large Lorry to those in the UK). Before I went on my first trip, I went to the salon and told my hairdresser to cut my hair off short enough to wash/rinse it with a bottle of water, so it turned out to be about as short as Carol’s is (mine was way down my back). We did have a microwave so I would heat water in the microwave to bathe, then wash my hair over a bucket with a bottle of water while my husband was driving down the road. Crazy how refreshing something that simple can feel when you’ve been on the road a while. Sometimes we would stop at a truck stop and pay to shower, but at $10 a shower we didn’t do it every day.

It won't be long before our van is converted and it too will have a 20ltr tank. Being a nature lover, one of my constant battles is my environmental footprint. Hopefully flying less, if at all and using the camper will have a smaller carbon footprint, but on the topic of plastics, do you buy new plastic bottles every time or are you able to keep some spare full ones in the van (I expect room is an issue?). I would use bottles if I had to but it wouldn't sit comfortably with me personally with the current state of things. I see Huggies now do biodegradable wipes. The originals just go to landfill.
@LifeistooshortCK3 жыл бұрын
We but as we need them as storage is our biggest challenge. Used to carry spares but its so easy to get we use the space for useful kit now. Not ideal but needs must. Our 20L tank is a bit of a pain to remove so I prefer to fill it in situ.

Good video, people have become conditioned to showering or bathing especially washing their hair fat too often, this is mainly because of the amount of soap/gels/shampoo/etc they will purchase and use. Teenage girls are the worst, my daughter makes me spend the same amount as the GDP of a small country on bath/shower products every week.

It always amuses me when I read in the comments on van conversion videos complaints that there is no shower..it’s a metal tent, what do they expect?! There’s nothing wrong with a strip wash.. bed bound patients in hospital only ever have sponge baths and stay perfectly clean. I went to boarding school where we had a strip wash every morning, were on a rota for a bath 3 times a week.. in a couple of inches of water .. and a hair wash once a week.. in a sink, using a plastic cup to pour water over your hair to rinse. That would never be considered acceptable today! As you say in your video our ancestors didn’t have running water, they broke the ice on the pitcher every winter morning before pouring it into a bowl to wash. Everyone is so used to showers these days I bet they have never considered a strip wash.. I’ve even seen it advertised on a video as a ‘shower hack’ !! If you’re desperate for a shower there’s always camp sites or local swimming baths.. or check into a hotel!

For #1 use a bottle with a cap, dispose of contents when you can, public bathroom or the woods if is allowed (remote area) remember no plastic only liquid at least 10’ away from a stream when in the woods and if you’re a woman like me, they have small urinals that can go straight to the bottle as well. I keep meaning to ask you about your box in the sink. I saw on another YT video re VW Campers, advice to NEVER put anything other than washing up water down the sink. No draining a tin of tuna, no spitting out your toothpaste, no draining of pasta, etc etc, otherwise it gets very smelly, seems Stinky Pete has a sister! That made me think of your box in the sink and that you perhaps don’t use your waste water facility at all. What’s your system? If your sink box is full where do you empty it?
@LifeistooshortCK2 жыл бұрын
It gets emptied in the bushes along the road somewhere. It’s only a bit of soapy water. Our sink pipe goes straight onto the road which is why we use the box to catch it. Water running from a van would really annoy people. Most van sinks do not have the u bend like at home so if they go into a tank they can get smelly. We don’t suffer from that though.

This is the only thing I have a problem with. We get hurricanes and lose power for a week. We have found that disposable “Sick Bed” Ex Lg disposable wet wipes are awesome! Much better than those small wipes. However, I would need a once a week hot shower at a campground. But, that’s just me! Americans tend to shower more than everyone, with two showers a day for many of us! 😅😅😅😅

We do those things too. Do you do your laundry in van on long trips or just find a launderette?

Does the UK have truck stop showers like in the US? They are reasonably priced here to serve the truckers parked overnight. But anyone can use them.
@oilburner2253 жыл бұрын
There are few truck stop showers in the UK, if you saw the state of the one's that do exist you most certainly wouldn't want to venture into them. I was trucking for a few years leading up to my retirement, never ever used a truck stop shower they really are disgusting. Most were covered in green mould (and worse) and that was the better ones. For cleanliness I used a similar method to Carol and Ken.

Thanks for making sure I never try one 😁👍. It’s about time our government made decent facilities for truckers if they want to attract drivers.

Hello again, just curious about how many litres of water you carry for say a few days trip ? Do you mean you never fill up the whole 20L ? And does it really save much petrol ( my van will be petrol ) if only carry a few litres instead of 20? Lastly , does the ?wrapping around the Jerry can stop it freezing , if not used would the water just freeze ? Sorry all the questions,,! Thanks Brenda

We carry no more than 15L in the tank and 2L as an emergency supply. We get an average of over 50 miles per gallon of fuel. I have not done any tests re carrying water. That comment is aimed at vans that often carry 60 to 150 litres of water. Just keep your van as light as comfortably possible.

I've not tried it but I'm still sceptical one can keep clean without soap. If that were true, why do we normally was with soap at home. Steaming the clothes sounds a good idea. Does carrying water really make a difference to how much fuel you use? One would if thought if you were so fanatical about saving fuel, your van would of undergone weight saving. From a lighter car battery to drilling holes in the none structural parts of the body work, as one would need to do in order to be competitive in motorsport. I'm sceptical since its widely claimed air conditioning or extra weight makes a car use more fuel, however doing a 70 miles round trip every day showed no noticeable difference in fuel usage. This was in a car with a larger engine, so perhaps a tiny 1.2 petrol may make a difference but a camper van is not light and doesn't have a tiny engine.

People are often skeptical about a lot of things they have not tried. Soap will always be needed to remove stubborn grease but not much else. Our water tank weighs 20 kilos when full but it rarely has more than 15 kilos in it. Some vans carry 100 to 200 kilos of water just because they worry they might run out which is really why I made the fuel comment. We keep our aircon on all year round when the engine is running.
