When introducing a new subject, a good instructor breaks it down into manageable segments, so the audience can understand it. You did exactly that, and made the opera and Wagner relatable. Your mix of audio, visual, lecture, and questions was spot on. The music for the Walkure brought back images of black and white silent cartoons from my youth. While I am more familiar with Italian opera, I now feel that I know something about the works of Wagner. Thanks for sharing! Good job Professor Murphy! 😊

Hmm. Maybe I was thinking of Scenes III and IV of Act II.

Act II is boring??? Its the heart of the story and it features the most engrossing music of the entire opera.

Wotan doesn't need someone from earth. They all live on earth. Wotan needs a free creature, free from all of the god's promises and oaths. That's why he didn't "wave his hand" and killed Hunding. He couldn't get involved.

Wagner wrote in the score that Wagner waves his hand and Hunding drops dead

What I recall is that Wotan drops Hunding with a wave of his hand. I will reread the libretto.

This guys gives a good overview… but can’t believe he skimmed over act 2 so fast! It’s so pivotal to the entire story! And didn’t even mention the tordesverkundung!

No. Only Wagner is performed at Bayreuth.
@ToxicTurtleIsMad Жыл бұрын
You mean NOT in Bayreuth, surely. Have you ever been to Bayreuth, seen a contemporary production there? Did solti record the ring in Bayreuth? Karajan? Furtwangler? What a stupid comment. Beyond stupid.

Amateur that I am, I am certain that Fidelio, La Traviata, and even Beethoven’s 9th have been performed at Bayreuth.

@@davemurphy3210 yes Beethoven 9 has been performed there a couple times in special performances. But not the others

Shortly after WWII, La Traviata was performed there.
