Life after high school straight up sucks especially with the pressure to find scholarships to ultimately slightly ease the debt after college which I'd be left hopeless wondering how to pay it off. Most people around my community can afford this. I’ve seen 2 siblings go to college and it wasn’t that bad because of certain scholarships. I think that people who want to go to college should, but free online courses should be avaliable. For example, I have learnt abstract algebra from an online textbook, even though I shouldn't have learnt it yet. And those free online courses should exist for every level: Undergraduate, graduate, PhD etc. Those courses should also issue a diploma after a final test, and businesses should not discriminate between people who have a diploma from an online course or people who have a diploma from college. That is the solution.

Before, I planned to go into the field of computing and become some sort of server analyst or a server technician at the time. However, I ultimately didn't go to school because I didn't want to put 49k towards my tuition and instead focused on experience. Sometimes, experience still can get you a job, but a lot of times I was turned away since I didn't have a degree to my name. Also wanted to go into the field of medicine but again, that's too expensive. One thing I really wish school taught me was how to manage my finances though, because I can easily see how people can drown in debt well before they're graduated. Especially when you're fresh out of high school, it's way too easy to ruin your credit, which is pretty much needed for a lot of things

@MineHero367
@MineHero367 3 жыл бұрын
Only problem with that these days is that most schools in my area have the stipulation "For first-time freshman only" on their scholarships, including the large scholarship every high-scholar gets once they graduate. Going to a community college might be cheaper, but then you cant get the $15-30k of scholarships you could get from the big university, you just have to pay them for all your general classes as well.
@K..C
@K..C 3 жыл бұрын
@@MineHero367 I'm not 100% sure of your situation but in my case it's still cheaper to go to community college first than to get the "big" scholarship from a university. I can get my general classes out of the way. As even though you would get 15-30k it would only cover around 1-1.5 years of tuition before I would have to pay for the last few classes and remaining year by myself. Which would set me back around 13-17k.

I did one semester in community college, then quit. I went to a trade school that does job placement upon graduation, and it literally changed my life. No prospective employer cares as much about anything as they do about *_experience._* If you're broke and fresh out of college, you have no real world experience. If your school gets your foot in the door somewhere, that first job *_is_* your experience for your next higher-paying job, and when you start working, you'll be under a much smaller cloud of debt. You might be surprised, there's some kind of trade school for almost anything you might be interested in. If the top-tier roles in your preferred industry require a traditional college degree, go to a trade school to get hired by an employer that will pay for your college education.

My parents insisted on my getting a "useful" degree (rather than what interested me), which was a LOT more expensive for them and still resulted in a useless bachelor's when I couldn't make it through the internship. Only about half of people who start a postsecondary degree complete it, and only about half of those that complete a degree get a job requiring it. So study what you feel passionate about, even if it means your parents drop you like a hot potato. It's your life, not theirs.
@SangoProductions213
@SangoProductions213 3 жыл бұрын
As a graduate, I've got one piece of advice to anyone looking to get a degree (in a field where it's not actually required): Don't. 4 years of experience in the field is 10x more valuable than almost any bachelor's degree. Not only that, but instead of charging you for the privilege of learning, you are paid, and actually contribute to society. Your life is not over if you don't go to college, no matter what the corrupt school systems try and tell you. And if you're willing to learn how to work with your hands, electricians and plumbers can make hundreds of thousands a year - no calculus required. No predatory loans or indoctrination needed. Just actually working and doing something for the world. Obviously, certain jobs (particularly doctors) have extremely stringent requirements (most of which are for good reason), so I'm not talking about those.

My mom, being a foreign mom, basically threatened for me to go back to college. Yea college isn’t the worst path. But it isn’t the best either. I’m going to college and don’t even know what I want to study, just doing general studies. I want to do something bigger than me, and college isn’t part of that plan.

I think that the biggest lie that schools are telling us is that we all have to go to college after high school. It’s just a natural assumption during your senior year that you will go to college and for many people, it seems like the only option. Instead of going to college, I just went to a local trade school and learned web development. After a couple weeks of job hunting, I got a job as a junior developer. It didn’t pay much, but it was enough for me to move out of my parents house and rent an apartment. Also, it gave me valuable experience. When I got my next job, I beat out 5 other people who were CS graduates fresh out of college because I had more experience than them. I now earn 90k a year and I am completely debt free. My advice is to only go to college if you want to pursue a career where a college degree is absolutely necessary. Otherwise you’re shooting yourself in the foot by wasting 4+ years of your life and getting yourself into thousands of dollars of debt.

in the case of my college it's definitely the college's end of not responding to any financial questions. the college subreddit is literally more responsive and helpful than the administration.

In my country the college is free but you must have really good grades, I am currently 15 years old and went several times back to school in the last 3 summers because I had F's in many of the subjects including Maths, Estonian, and Russian. But here I am living a free life listening to 90s songs and I even own a nice 90s car (cost 3500€) I don't even have my car license yet but if I get one, ill be one happy Estonian.

I graduated in 2004 in the US. I went to ITT Tech of all places. I have debt that I have been paying on since 2009... My school was in the shady business of selling poor quality education and was found guilty of it and was forced to pay back the students who attended. Unfortunately for me, most of my funding was a private loan, which did not qualify for refunds. So I never got to graduate with a Bachelor of Computer Science in Networking and have 14k worth of debt still and no education and no credits that can transfer, even if I wanted them to. ---Got to Love The US

I'm currently a senior in high school and plan to go to a community college for Auto Body Technology, and already did a school visit for my current high school and loved it! My brother already had some FAFSA help and my mom is helping me do that again. She and I do plan on going to a private college visit there, so she can get a idea on how it is.

I got one, honestly without it I probably wouldn't bother with college. It just isn't worth it when I'm teaching myself all of the skills anyways. All my college does is have me research and write papers. Usually 1 paper per class per week followed by 1 forum post per class per week, then 1-3 replies to another student per class per week. Any variation outside that is rare. Actually technically I applied for a normal scholarship, but this college came along and "upgraded" it to a full ride on the condition it only applied to them. The student who was offered it first rejected it and I was the runner up who ended up with it.

With all the $$ you pay to colleges, there is also the question if what they are teaching you are actually useful. I've been to workshops where many professionals admitted that more than half of what they had to learn at college was useless. I guess it makes you a "well-rounded student." Not sure if that is even worth the extra classes you have to pay for.

I personally dont plan on going to college, I'm gonna be a 1st year starting next school year. I have my own life ready for the most part planned out, I know what I wanna do, and that's more than most can say. I've found my calling, and im following it, hopes maybe to high, maybe a little to optimistic, but I always get back up, i've got multiple back up plans, and im already at the start of my career doing twitch streams just about every Friday night and Saturday night. The future is scary, and I dont think anyone can truly be ready, it doesn't shine with that end of the tunnel light, but im gonna face it with as much courage and optimism as I can, I learned that my depression got me no where. So im gonna pursue My art, music, streamer/youtuber life, and make the most out of it. No college or extra education needed Damn sorry that was long
