This Yamaha YZF1000R Thunderace rebuild has taken the best part of a year to complete. Through all the pain and heart break, all the sets back. We eventually completed the rebuild!. And in this upload we finally get to take the bike out on the open road!. But first it needs to pass the MOT test....

You need to put teflon tape on the threads of your compressor fittings.
@UKTomsk

When using ptfe tape make sure you put it on the same way on the thread front to back anticlockwise or when you tighten down on it, it will unravel. Good Luck.

I bought exactly the same bike in 1998. Italian model as well, as a parallel import as they were known back then. At its first MOT, the testing station stuck a beam deflector on the headlamp for me! Kept it until 2018. It was Yamaha's stop gap bike between the FZR1000 and the R1. In fact I think the first R1's had the same engine? Might be wrong on that one. Still, it was and still is today an awesome bike.

The thunderace was more or less the old FZR1000 with a new set of clothes. Always seemed like a stop gap model while Yamahe finished off the R1. Still got plenty of go though. But yes, more touring than sports. As others have said ptfe tape on your airline fittings.

Geez, it sounds like the cam chain is loose on that bike. Might just be the audio from the camera. The rust in the tank, I used white vinagar (tesco about 20p a bottle) then dried the tank with a hairdryer. After sloshed some acertone in the tank. Next, I put a cup of 2stroke oil in the tank and then filled my tank up. It's been great for over 6 months, just have to make sure I fill up on my way home from a ride to limit the rust coming back. Good luck, it was a absolute pain in the assssss😅

I've owned an 'Ace since new in 1999 when I was in my 20s (it's now relegated to old man semi-retired status as I replaced it with an MT10.) A bit of history... Yamaha's flagship sports bike in the mid 90s was the ageing FZR1000 EXUP. The Honda Fireblade changed the game for litre class sports bikes (smaller size and lower weight) and whilst Yamaha was developing the YZF-R1, as a stop gap, they updated the FZR with the sportier swingarm from the YZF-750, went to semi-ecu controlled ignition with EXUP value (speed, load/gear and rpm sensor based), uprated the suspension, gave it a new "posh frock" fairing and styling and called it the YZF1000R Thunderace. It was their halo model sports bike at the time (for 2 years) to try and compete with the Fireblade and Kwaka ZX9R (which IMO it did well and was a litle bit better than both). The R1 changed the game again, and the rest is history... It got reclassified at this point as a Sports Tourer, which it did fairly well as for a few years. I did about 54k on mine, doing track days (both in the UK and at the Nurburgring), rode the TT course and did 40 or 50 euro trips to the Alps/Black Forrest and places like that. It's still a great bike, if a little dated.. ;) (and the riding position isn't very good to small, older men, which I have now become (MT10 is a worthy replacement for old men who are still hooligans at heart... :D )... ;) )

oxalic acid for rust removal In a petrol tank is by far the best. I've tried other acids such as sulphuric,hydrochloric and commercial products. The inside of the tank looked like new, and needed to be done outside l found out when I opened the garage door l was met with tools with a light layer of rust on presumably from the fumes,bit of a shock to be honest, but the tank was spotless, it came off an old triumph trophy and was heavily rusted.

Soak the inside of the petrol tank with 20 percent strength vinegar, let it soak till rust has gone, maybe 24 hours or longer depends how bad it is. Then fill the tank with a mixture of baking soda and water to neautralise the acid from the vinegar. Then dry the inside of the tank. Get a tank liner chemical make sure it is ethanol proof.

To clean your Tank use a product by C Wylde and son's Leeds, it's called Bio Rust remover. It works 100% I have used it many times, never failed. Just get a bucket, fill with hot water mix biorust in with water, pour into your rusty tank, top up with more hot water right up to the fuel filler neck. Leave for 3 days. Pour out into a container that has a lid has you can put other rusty metal parts, bolts and such in container and treat them too. Your tank will be gleaming. Put a litre of petrol in tank, swirl around, empty into separate container to be disposed of at your local waste management site. Refit your tank and fill it up to stop rust returning. Honestly biorust has worked brilliantly Fo me on many occasions on some of the worst rusty tanks I have come across. It leaves inside of tank rust free and like new. Lovely bike by the way, seriously thinking of getting one in blue and black, same colours has my ZZR1100 C1. I own a YZF750R in cocktail colours too. Great engines those 20 valvers. 😊😊😊

Aw, c'mon. The 916 produced slightly less power, sure, but even the street version weighed less fully fueled and oiled than the thunderace does dry. Which is why the 916 was winning world superbike in '94, '95 and '96, and the thunderace wasn't. And, y'know, unless it was *your* dad's bike, you know inside which one you'd rather ride. One is sexy, after all, and the other one is a thunderace. I say that as someone who has owned, raced and loved several FZRs, and would jump at the chance to pick one up now - the FZR is basically the thunderace without the questionable styling. The 916 simply kicks it into the weeds in terms of performance and styling. As for the zx9, never rode one, the fireblade and gsxr I rode both, and both were enormous amounts of fun. Particularly the gsxr, which was one of the most stupid-inducing bikes I've ever ridden. The FZRs were far more predictable (or boring, if you will) to ride at high speed, but the ease with which the gsxr lifted the front wheel was simply hilarious. Less hilarious was the cost of replacing the clutch every second set of tyres. And that was the '87 model, out nearly 10 years before the thunderarse.

@@wibblywobblyidiotvision There is no doubt, that a 916 is a very beautiful bike, timeless till today. As nearly all Ducati they look best. But: little less Power?? 127hp vs 146hp. The Thunderace easily outperformed the 916 probably (surely) not on track but on street. (This is not my guess, but own experience on endless German highway battles 🙂 at the time with all the competitors as I wrote) And for Superbike. Thunderace was never used at WSBK due to the fact that in this period 2cyl had 1000cc, 4cyl had 750cc aka yzf750 later R7 (Nitro Nori 🙂)

Regarding the rust in the tank, I did the following: Filled the tank with Apple Cider vinegar and left it 24 hours Drained it out, then rinsed with water, to loosen the rust. Drained the water out then sprayed lots of WD40 in the tank. Drain this, then fill with fuel and put an inline fuel filter. Change the filter after 2 months and I never had an issue.

That looks stunning, im actually thinking of buying one from a friend of mine, i drove it some kms and loved it, love the engine, its so smooth, and more confortable than my SV650s as it stands. Congratulations Rye, it was a hell of a good job 😉

The Thunderace was the 1st big bike I ever rode , after having an NSR 125 RR , the Ace belonged to a work mate who had purchased it new , he'd only had it a month after getting back into biking , he let me have a go and I absolutely loved it , fantastic machine , it was the same silver and red , great memories 👍🏻
