Data Engineer here, in IT certifications carry more weight than Degrees which are generic. Certifications are hands on and practical, Degrees are not.

When it comes to cybersecurity and cloud jobs, CERTIFICATIONS are KING. The curriculum at varsities is too outdated to offer anyone pursuing cloud or cybersecurity an advantage because these fields change quickly. Having a degree is good, but don't let the lack thereof hold you back. Amazon and Microsoft typically host conferences that provide you with vouchers for exams.

In the company I work for. We interviewed someone for a developer role, all three of us preferred the guys with certifications over the degree applicants - reason being, we don't want to buy Flour, baking powder, sugar etc Instead we'd prefer self-raising flour (hope that makes sense) - most tech companies do the same thing. Hope that makes sense. It's more cost effective as you don't have to pay for that person to upskill. I always advice my close friends to always have a certification they are preparing for. Skill and your proven ability to deliver tend to make you favoured most of the time (but not always).

@@hildahnhlapo8396 hi Hilda, if money is not an issue and he can secure funding he can go to University. Your job will be to then save up money for him to do certifications whilst in college/university. If you can't secure funding, then look at bootcamps like Umuzi Academy, We Think Code and Explore Data Science Academy to enrol him for a learnership/internship - personally I went to Explore and I completed a data science program. Ultimately options are there. IT is so beautiful because you don't have to have a qualification from a "recognised" institution there's alternatives.

The difference is the certifications. While honors is good, it doesnt hold much weight in yhe cyber security field. The first guy's CISSP, CISM, CSIRT, etc, hold much more importance in the Cyber field. These certificates almost guarantee a high salary

In cybersecurity certain certificates count more than degrees... Because degrees are very general, and in South Africa we don't have any Cybersecurity specific degrees, they have computer science and general IT, which touches on security but doesn't focus on it the way that certifications do.

Mostly for 2024 please advise 2023 to look into IT. Without going to UJ, or Wits. IT is big and it pays. It's insane how one can actually make in IT. Network engineering and cloud engineering these are fundamentals of IT and they can change your life more than you can imagine.

The difference between the 2 payslips is the certificates. I am in cyber security with a Btech and I am earning close to the last payslip. Those certificates are not easy to achieve and some you have to maintain by paying professional fees and do more studying or you will lose them.

@@TebstechpodcastI live in U.K. (my heritage is South African but I was born and bred here). When I call through to various customer service places ( for help with online groceries, car insurance, gas utilities for example), there often is a South African customer agent (based in Cape Town) at the end of the line. It makes me super mad because I know they are not being paid equivalent in pounds. I know our phone calls are recorded so I often say how unfair it is and in a way I see it as an indirect form of apartheid. It’s just not fair. They pay less than they would pay the people here - when really, and ethically, they should pay the same.

The cost of living between these countries should make up all the difference. You should continue with your A+ certification and continue to look for a job. Highlight your customer service experience on your CV and link it to the Helpdesk duties. You should be fine. That's experience counts.

I've said this several times. When someone tells me I have a degree but I'm unemployed. I look at the person I ask which degree did you do. Only to find out it's a stupid degree e. g.
