My Dad was there in WWII. So many Germans surrendered that they had to barb wire their own machine gunners for protection. They had to pull hoses in so they could get the captives water. When I travelled there comfortably as a tourist, I imagined my Dad in full gear sleeping on the ground. He was Italian/ American and could speak Italian. The army used him as an interpreter. He was sent home from Italy disabled and lived to be 90. I was so lucky to have him as my father.

Heading to Sicily for the first time this coming week and looking forward to it. We are staying in Marsala, Agrigento, Ortigia, Taormina, and Cefalu so we will get to see a lot of Sicily. I'm from the next town over from Noto and agree that it is a nice town to visit, but even more charming and vibrant is the adjoining city of Modica in the province of Ragusa next to Scicli!

My friend you forgot Agrigento with his amazin valley of temples. You forgot MT.Etna and Catania. And other places like Segesta, Selinunye,Erice,Modica ect.

1st generation born in the U.S. My parents and all my aunts & uncles are from Sicily. They immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1960s/early 1970s. I haven't visited the motherland yet. Hope to visit one day.

I've done most of Sicily, and prefer the north and north east. This year I did Trapani, Erice, Marsala, St Vito lo Capo, Favignava and Levanzo, also went to Catania and also Palermo (have done Catania & Palermo lots) I actually hated Trapini. I also went back to Mondello, and boy has it changed in 20 odd years, so built up and touristy, Sun umbrella's everywhere. Last time I went it was still unspoilt. Such a shame.
