Tips from a local: cow’s ice cream is the best ice cream you will ever have - splurge for the waffle dip cone. Dave’s lobster rolls are the best lobster rolls (maybe even just the best lobster) you will ever have, splurge for the half and half. Half hot butter half cool mayo two sandwiches in one. It’s better than every lobster roll you can get in the city in a sit down restaurant. You will think I’m insane because Dave’s lobster is a shack. The food is so good they don’t have to try by having a venue. (Both of these are on the waterfront) If you’re already downtown and looking for the best place to just sit go to the waterfront beer garden. Then you get the view. I would recommend eating at the shacks and then having a drink and relaxing in the beer garden. If this is your second time to Halifax take the ferry over to the Canteen for supper. The chef there won Canada’s top chef. They don’t really advertise that for some reason so it still feels like secret amazing food. Drink Tidal Bay wines. If you’re a wine drinker our Tidal Bay is like if you mixed a Riesling and a Pinot Grigio. You get a white that tastes like fresh summer, a little sweet but not too sweet with hints of stone fruit made to pair with seafood. Not oaked. And I’m so grateful I live close enough to get this all the time. It’s a lovely easy drinking wine that pairs well with food. Nova 7 is a little bit sweeter like mixing a rosé with a Pinot Grigio and is also awesome if you like sweet. Probably just don’t have our local red. I’m a red drinker and I hate it lol. Late evening you can get a wine flight at Obladee in downtown Halifax paired with cheese. It’s a lovely indulgence. Not sure when you get off ship but if you can quickly get to Two if By Sea before 12:00 for a croissant, you will think you have died and gone to heaven. Their croissants are worth the huge lines. Their hot beverages are not, just grab some Tim’s because it cheaper and faster. You’ll wait 15 mins for a regular brew coffee. We have many cool things to do here but honestly my favourite is spending the day on the waterfront people watching. You probably don’t need to see the Titanic graveyard unless you’re on a hop in hop off bus type thing or the harbour hopper. Peggy’s cove is pretty but just a lighthouse for the drive. But downtown Halifax, our maritime culture? Those cool lamp posts that are all bent to look like they’re drunk? I think that’s my favourite here. Be a local and just chill out. Talk to a stranger. The Harbour Hopper: if you like hop on hop off buses a lot you might think it’s cool to basically do a bus tour in a boat that drives downtown and then straight into the ocean. It’s a bus ship and it’s cool. Still a bit of cheesy ness of a hop on hop off vibe so if you don’t like those you will not like this especially with how small our city is / doesn’t have a ton of sites to really see? If you’re staying longer than a day trip (like overnight) and it’s one of the nights the tall ship Silva (a tall ship is the kind of ship you’d find in Pirates of the Carribean) is turned into a dance bar and you love dance bars then definitely try it. Incredible to party like a pirate. Google all the pirate lore of the area. It’s pretty cool. Also listen to “Barrett’s privateer” Google the Halifax explosion before you go. If it’s your third time to Halifax the park with the monument is really neat at sunset. Google the ghost stories of Halifax or take one of the ghost tours. Some pretty incredible tales. You have to be here in October and be able to do this late evening. Don’t go on the dark rocks on Peggy’s cove and don’t read further ahead unless you want a scary detailed explanation. People die on Peggy’s cove all the time because people ignore signage to not get too close to edge because the waves will sucks them in and smash them unconscious against the rocks before you can say “rescue” and for some reason we never put up a fence. So just be super careful around there. Sorry for the graphic imagery but it feels like it’s a person a year this happens to. And it’s hard to recover the person because even rescue is too dangerous. The best way to have Donair is not to get a wrap but to order garlic fingers and use Donair sauce as a dip. Garlic fingers are a local food we have that’s almost a cheesy bread pizza. You dip the cheesy bread in the Donair sauce. Actual Donairs are an acquired taste. This is the best way to try Donair sauce because even if you don’t like it on the Garlic Fingers, cheesy garlic buttery pizza has universally wide appeal and it’s not a total waste.

My wife and I had our honeymoon at Nova Scotia in 1995. My wife (a.k.a., better half) passed away about (2) years ago. I am hoping that my children and I can go back there, as I am very sick, I would like to keep my promise to spread her ashes as she requested at Peggy's Cove. We got to see Saint Margaret's Bay, Lunenburg, Dartmouth Yarmouth, Cabot Trail, and many more which I cannot remember - Canada is truly blessed, as am I for being blessed for having Terry (my deceased wife) in my life. I just wished it could have been longer.

I am from Halifax and was pleased with your take on my city. You should also have mentioned that from the downtown boardwalk you can easily take the ferry ( $2.75 ) to cross the harbour to Dartmouth. It's about a 12 min ride and gives you a different perspective of both waterfronts. The ferry runs every 15mins during peak hours. I can't believe you didn't enjoy the donair, they are amazing...

My wife and I took a cruise on Holland America from Boston to Montréal in Aug 2022, while in Halifax we booked a Private Taxi tour through Halifax Taxi Tours. Lem was our driver/guide for a 6 hour excursion. We were able accomplish so much, and since the tour is catered to your interest, no 2 tours are the same. Lem's knowledge of the history, along with his love and pride for his home, is reflected in his tours. He took us to an AMAZING locals spot that had the most amazing Lobster Rolls on our way out to Peggy's Cove. Lem also gave us the history of the Halifax Explosion and took us right to the approx spot of where the explosion occurred. I would definitely suggest booking with him and I will be the next time we visit Halifax.

Halifax like so much of Canada is just taken for granted. My parents immigrated from Ireland. My father and his brother landed at pier 21 then moved on to Montreal. The emotion I felt at the pier 21 museum was intense. I have also seen the port in Cobh Ireland that they departed from. My wife's father departed Canada to spend over 4 years fighting in Europe during WW2 from halifax. Halifax is a special place indeed.

I live in Nova Scotia and visit Halifax often. I was pleased to see your vision on the City. You got everything bang on with it with the exception of the Donair, in my opinion. There are many takes on the donair but it is a sweet mess to eat. There is also Casino Nova Scotia at the far end of the boardwalk. Northern Watters Knitwear is an awesome shop to visit and have exceptional products there, and yes i am related to the owner so i am kinda impartial. Many many wonderful shops and restaurants to visit. Scenery is spectacular. So very glad you got to visit and touch base with your family !!

My maternal ancestors arrived in Nova Scotia in 1751 on the Speedwell (Canada's "Mayflower"). The house that my Grandmother's Family owned near Halifax is now a local regional museum. I have visited Halifax twice. I loved the Citadel. I have yet to visit the Maritime Museum, Titanic exhibit or Pier 21 Immigration Museum. One day I may return. I have visited 9 out of 10 Provinces and 2 out of 3 Territories. Yukon, Newfoundland & Labrador and Cape Breton are on my bucket list. Our country is so vast. I understand the appeal of cruising but we Canadians do need to get out and experience our own amazing places. I live within driving distance of the Canadian Rockies. It never gets old to go see them.

It is best to mention that Peggys Cove is a place with a hidden danger that tourists ignore. There are multiple signs warning about sudden high waves. It is recommended that people DO NOT walk on wet or black rocks near the water. People who are washed off the rocks cannot be rescued as the waves are strong.

A very good overview of what to do in Halifax. I’m quite certain that the Hop-on, Hop-off bus service includes Fairview Lawn Cemetery on its route. In previous years tour guides were on site at the cemetery to offer a guided tour of the Titanic graves. As a local tour guide, I’m amazed at people showing up at the cemetery and staring at the grave stones trying to guess what they are about. A guided tour there is necessary to fully appreciate the stories of those who perished that fateful night.

Like you, my Dad was born in Halifax and left there and a toddler. My niece then went to university in Halifax and ultimately moved there. I’ve been there several times and just love it. The cemetery where the Titanic victims is definitely worth a visit. Reading up about the Halifax explosion before getting there is definitely worth doing as it a huge part of Halifax’s history and what it is today. Not far from Peggy’s Cove , there is a very touching memorial to Swissair 111 which crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Peggy’Cove and many fishing communities. Many fishermen took to the sea that night to search for survivors. A very sad incident, all passengers and crew were killed and many locals’ lives changed forever after searching for survivors. As for Donairs? Love ‘em. The sweet sauce seals the deal.

I was born in Halifax, but my Naval Officer dad passed away when I was a baby, and after his burial at sea (1961), my family never went back either. I can definitely relate to that homecoming feeling. The year after my military husband retired, we took a road trip from southern Ontario, staying in Lunenburg, visiting much of the southeast shore. I did see my first home in Dartmouth, but leaving through Halifax, it was a torrential rainstorm, so hoping for decent weather in late June. On a side note, my mom met Bessie Murray, the designer of the Nova Scotia Tartan, during her time on the craftshow circuit with the silkscreen scarves she created. She also met and was befriended by Harold and Winifred Fox, artists and jewelry makers, who became my Godparents.

We also took the cruise line excursion and found there was too little time to take it all in. I wish it were a six-hour excursion considering the travel time. Nice video, and very happy you guys enjoyed visiting Halifax while on your cruise. Although I can't believe you all didn't enjoy your donairs! They are the bomb. Not sure about the food shack on the waterfront you got them from though... you should have went to a Pizza & Donair shop off the waterfront IMO. Always next time! 🙂 Downtown Halifax is so compact & walkable that visitors could easily spend their entire time in port with a wide variety of things to do & see without needing book an excursion of any kind. Bring comfortable walking shoes, and maybe a windbreaker or light rain jacket, as it can be cooler along the water even in summer. Obviously there will be more 'touristy type' attractions during peak summer and early fall seasons. Some possible things to do or see right in Halifax include: - walk or hike in Point Pleasant Park, not very far south of where your ship will be docked while in port; - visit The Halifax Public Garden's; - NS Museum of Natural History. *Be sure to say hello to "Gus" the 100yr old tortoise, museum resident since 1942, and Nova Scotian Ambassador! - Halifax Seaport Farmer's Market (Sat & Sun only) North America's oldest continuously operating farmers market, and a great place for NS themed souvenirs, gifts and good stuff to eat; - Take an Alexander Keith's Brewery Tour and learn about the history of the city, the man and his iconic Keith's India Pale Ale... "Those who like it. Like it a lot!" (look up Alexander Keith's Brewery Tour on KZbin for a taste of the tour); - Take a Harbour Hopper Tour along the streets and in Halifax Harbour itself in their amphibious tour vehicles; - Go aboard 'HMCS Sackville', Canada's last remaining Corvette from WWII's Battle of the Atlantic, a National Historic Site and Naval Memorial. I highly recommend visiting the Sackville, but I am biased as one of my grandfathers served aboard the Corvettes in the North Atlantic during WWII. I remember well his stories about his years at sea aboard these tiny warships; - Citadel Hill, National Historic Site and Canadian Army Museum. Site of British military fortifications dating back to 1749, with a commanding view of Halifax Harbour. Try being a 19th century "Soldier For a Day" as a member of the 78th Highlanders. Even if you don't visit Citadel Hill you will hear from the fortress as it fires off their 'noon hour gun' daily, with the cannon shot booming through the downtown; - Check out Halifax's Historic Properties on the waterfront and the beautiful old stone buildings, some dating back to the days of the Privateers... "I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier. The last of Barrett's Privateers." - Stop in to 'The Lower Deck' restaurant & pub for a bite to eat and a drink. With luck you'll catch a set by a local band. Regardless, be sure to explore downtown Halifax and try some of the great local craft beers, Nova Scotian wines and spirits. There's a ton of pubs, bars and restaurants all within easy walking distance and great & varying vibes in them all. These are just a few suggestions for folks visiting Halifax and doesn't even scratch the surface of possible things to see, do and taste during your time in port. Enjoy and Welcome!

Hi Ilana. Loved watching your review of Halifax port and the places to visit. We first visited Halifax in October 2018 and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Our friends recommended the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 which is a quick walk from where our ship docked. We loved it. It is often compared to Ellis Island in terms of immigration to Canada in the 20th century. Fascinating look at history from another country’s perspective. Well worth the price of admission. We are planning to return to Canada in September 2023 and revisit Halifax. Thanks for the great tips.

If you are interested in NS history...some great "excursions" would be to explore sites relating to the Halifax explosion. (ship parts were thrown over 2 km away and you can visit the sites and get more info at the Maritime museum) This was the largest explosion before nuclear bombs (caused when two ships collided in 'the narrows'). When 3000 tons of explosives ignite it is catastrophic but they burned for 17 minutes .... causing many to stop what they were doing to look at the fires. The explosion leveled much of the city and killed 2000 people instantly - and injured 9000 more. Those who survived sustained awful eye injuries or were made blind. With so many now blind...the Canadian National Institute for the Blind was formed! To this day, Halifax is leader in this field and you will notice advanced signals and aids for the higher than average population of visually impaired people.

We just did the holland america cruise from montreal to boston late september. We took in the tour to peggy's cove, which was beautiful. however they only stopped there for about 30 minutes, not giving people enough time to fully enjoy the area. There was a long line up just to get into the public washrooms, so many people were cut short. A Tip....If you go to the tourist shop, directly across from the public washrooms, you will find clean washrooms there instead. Since we had to tender back and forth to our ship, we didn't walk too far from the port. Downtown Portland, was much more accessible.

So glad you enjoyed your visit to Halifax. We live in Dartmouth (the city across the harbour) and we love the boardwalk in Halifax. We did this cruise in 2017 and played tourist in our city. We met some people from Edmonton who tagged along with us as we walked to the Citadel. We took a back route that isn't quite so hilly. On our way ,there was a regimental band practicing for a ceremony that was in the afternoon. It was like they were playing just for us! Very emotional with the bagpipes and drums. Another point of interest that many people seek out when visiting Halifax is Pier 21, which was the first point of arrival in Canada for many imigrants over the years. There is a wonderful museum there and archives that people use to trace their roots. Another very emotional spot. Furthur down the boardwalk is Historic Properties where all of this rejuvenation of the downtown started in the 1970's. Lots of good eateries down that way, too.

@@LifeWellCruised and we'd love to have you. Nova Scotia has a lot of unique places, and most are all within a pretty easy drive. Is Schattauer a German name? Our south shore was basically settled by the Germans centuries ago,and in Mahone Bay there is a plaque with all of the founding names. My husband's mother was an Eisnor (shortened from Eisenhaur). Lots of "come from aways" are settling in Nova Scotia again, and the Germans are once again buying property along the South Shore. This is an excellent summary on what to do in Halifax. We were there on October 2 on NCL Pearl from Boston to QC. We had a very pleasant walk along the waterfront then went to the NS Art Gallery and saw the Maud Lewis exhibit. We then walked to the public gardens which still looked beautiful in October. We love Peggy's Cove, but had been there the previous year on a driving trip from Toronto. I think the best part of the Canada-New England cruise is sailing up the Saguenay to La Baie. That is where the best fall colour was in early October. Not all cruises go to La Baie, but it is worth finding a cruise that does. The people that meet the ship there are wonderful and put on a show at the pier. Love your channel.

Rented a car and stayed at Bn B which was a wonderful experience in late May, early June. Lunenberg sea port was excellent as was Peggy’s Cove. No whale watching, but a boat ride to see bird island and all of the nesting Puffins in 7 foot seas with a class of 3 graders was unforgettable! A day at the Fort and a lunch of the period ? With rainy weather and costumes of the 1700’ s was also a reminder of how spoiled we are today. I missed the tour of the under the ocean coal mine for 3 miles by 20 minutes was a big disappointment. It was later closed as unsafe. Now after watching the 10 years of searching “ the curse of Oak Island” and all of the modern tools, I would love to visit and tour the shoreline some day! History is being rewritten for North America. We live near Orlando, Florida and have experienced the force of Hurricanes over the past 60 years and visit Daytona Beach every November the past 20 years. Thank you for sharing the video and comments as we are now in our mid 80’s but still love to travel together!

It could be chilly. Dress appropriately and have an umbrella in case you get drizzle or rain. You could also have a beautiful sunny day! Maritime weather is changeable due to the influence of the surrounding ocean. The leaves are turning now so it should be pretty. Enjoy your time. So much to see and do in our beautiful province!

Always nice to see what others are doing while visiting Halifax. This is where I spent all my University years and I loved it. Donairs were a popular snack especially after an evening of pubs but I did not like them either- that sweet sauce 🤢 no Very different from the “Greek version “ With only one day you have to choose what to do and😢 everyone loves Peggy’s Cove. Lots of walking required to see public gardens and Citadel Hill . Pier 21 is a very interesting place to visit also. For cruisers I would simply suggest that you do a little research and plan out all the spots that you want to see.

Thank you for the video and all the great tips! We cruised last fall and are going again this summer. Our favorite shop was Peace by Chocolate in the waterfront area. It's so good we're still "rationing" it and will be stopping there for sure! (Look for the film "Peace by Chocolate" to understand the name and the family's story--we loved it)

Adding Fisherman’s Cove next time I think you would enjoy. It’s just across the harbour in Eastern Passage. It’s like a mini Halifax Boardwalk with also a beach. You can also take a ferry to George’s Island right in the harbour and explore it.

Our favourite in Halifax is the beautiful City garden, one of the only 2 original victorian garden in Canada (the other is in Victoria). It’s a 15 minute walk from port or a stop on the Hop on/off. Really beautiful!

Halifax is one of the ports and I was already going to book the Peggy's Cove excursion and now I'm sure to. I will keep your video handy to help me maneuver around once there. We have spent 4 days in Halifax on cruise itineraries an will be back next August. We just love it and always eat at the Bicycle Thief. Have enjoyed the Maritime Museum, The Citadel (complete w/ noon cannon shot), Gardens, all of the traditional snacks, tees shops, The Plaid Place and strolling the boardwalk. We might do morning Peggy's Cove and afternoon HoHo to see more of town next time. I would always choose Halifax over St. John which has less to offer. If you have time, the excursion to Lunenberg is interesting. I studied Halifax Harbor explosion history and Titanic history before going which helped me to appreciate the area and its people.

I agree that you choose some of the best spots to see in the Halifax area. Peggy's Cove is my favorite but the Citadel is wonderful also. For lunch in downtown a restaurant named "Upstairs Downstairs" has never disappointed me. The most difficult thing to get used to in Halifax (maybe elsewhere in Nova Scotia too) is that some of the lobster is served chilled. Not my favorite but it seems to be fairly popular. I also highly recommend visiting more of Nova Scotia if you ever have an opportunity to. Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, Baddek, Louisburg, Beinn Bhreagh, and Cape Brenton are all fantastic places to visit. One of my favorite areas to visit and regardless of how many times I go there, I see new things every time and thoroughly enjoy the trip.
