I live in Juneau, Alaska, one of the ports of call. Definitely bring/dress in layers because we have weather that’s very fickle. We live in the Tongass Rain Forest so that means it rains A LOT! Seattle’s got nothing compared to Juneau. Sometimes umbrellas are a good choice, but most of the time when it rains, it blows 15-40mph. Locals fondly call it sideways rain. Best times to travel for good weather are May-middle of July. Temps can range from low 40’s to 80’s (fahrenheit). Average temp is about 55-65 degrees fahrenheit. The further into the summer, the weather tends to get nastier, more often than not. When you do get off the ship and spot snow on the mountains, please don’t ask what elevation we’re at. You just got off of a ship. 😉🤣 FYI-Alaska is the 49th state of the US. Juneau is the capital even though we have only 32,000 people. We use American currency (or bank cards). Main language is English, although we have other prominent Alaska native languages such as Tlingit and Haida. Welcome to Alaska! Hope your cruise is awesome! We love our state and hope you fall in love with it too! ☺️

My husband and I just returned from an inside passage cruise to Alaska on Holland America's Westerdam. I did a lot of research prior to our cruise so I purchased very few of the items suggested by you and many of the other cruise writers. I'm happy that I didn't load up with all of the items that were suggested. Our veranda room had vinyl walls so anything magnetic would have been useless. We had more than enough storage, closets with plenty of hangers, night stands, a vanity. Our bathroom, also had vinyl walls, but it had lots of storage so no need for over the door hanging storage, or magnetic hooks. By our door, we had a soft light that stayed on and a motion activated floor light so no need for night lights. We had plenty of charging stations. Our room had a safe in the closet. I never wore a hat or a heavy jacket even though it was cloudy and cool during most of our cruise. My husband water-proofed our light-weight jackets and sneakers (Sketchers Step-ins), I wore gloves once. Prior to your cruise, go on-line and look at your room. This saved us a lot of money on extras we did not need. Also, don't spend all your port days on excursions. Save at least one day to go on your own so you are free to go where you want to. Just be sure to watch the time so you arrive back at the ship on time. Our cruise was wonderful, and we can't wait to go again.

1. Not spending at least a day in first port for time change 2. Not budgeting for excursions 3. Not booking excursions early enough 4. Plan for lots of rain, and bring lots of layers 5. Bring sunglasses and a hat and touchscreen gloves 6. Get out on deck early for the best viewing spots- wildlife best in the morning 7. Get a veranda balcony if within your means 8. Check how long you have in each port, and which ones you’ll see/miss 9. Eat locally at the ports 10. Be prepared for seasickness

Experienced 30’ seas during the Ketchikan to Victoria leg in 2008. I’d been on sea sickness medication the entire cruise and had no problem. The vast majority of passengers, however, were in their cabins. Very eerie walking around the “ghost ship” where the casino and dining rooms were empty!

It's why I recommend for people who get sea sick to do one out of Vancouver, less time in open ocean so less time for really rough seas. I grew up taking the ferry from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy, ooh the rocking it did some times being such little bots comparatively, and with not everyone required, oe able, to get cabins, some of the 'public' areas were no go if you didn't like the smell...and crew were doing their best.

Several additional tips: 1. Bring binoculars--some lines provide them and some don't. 2. Choose the right time to cruise. If you want to see black bears--choose August/when the salmon is running. If you are looking for a bargain choose May or Sept. 3. Choose the right cruise line/ship. For cold weather cruising it is so nice to sail on a line like HAL where they have a covered pool area and lots of inside areas where you can view the scenery like the Crow's nest. On almost all of my cruises there have been days when it's raining so hard that being outside is difficult due to wind while sailing and heavy rain. Lying outdoors in the sun on an Alaskan cruise is a rarity so all those areas with pool loungers are "unused space" on your Alaskan cruise.
@Dutch_Uncle
@Dutch_Uncle 9 ай бұрын
Anohter reason to go in May or September is that the leaves are not out in May, so you can see the critters, and by September the leaves are normally falling so you can see them. June-August the leaves can pevent animal sightings from the road or rail.

We just did an Alaskan cruise last month and plan to do it again next summer. One of the things we will do differently next year is not book so many excursions and city tours. Instead, we will hang out in town and soak in the local vibe. Having said that our favorite excursions were the dog mushing camp in Juneau and the Zipline in Icy Point Straight (Icy Straight Point?) It’s called the Zip Rider and it was a BLAST!!! It’s a full minute and a half and you are just FLYING down the mountain! Heads up though… They say it’s a “short walk” from the top of the mountain to the zip line platform IT IS NOT!!! It is a steep, winding, treacherous hike down to the zip line platform. Be prepared!

Here's a tip for Skagway - I cruised with 3 friends in 2004, connecting rooms w/balconies on a Celebrity ship (you're right about getting a room with a balcony, it's worth it). We all wanted to take the White Pass train & rode together going up - I booked an additional 'trip' where I got off the train at the top, then took a bus back down (the bus driver was great, telling stories, singing songs), then we had a special outdoor grilled salmon lunch, learning to and then panning for gold, and touring the Red Onion Saloon 'brothel museum" (photos, the Madam's famous gown, the rooms the 'employees' used - all Very Fun !) My friends just rode the train back down & missed all of that ~ all told me they wished they'd have done what I did, because the views from the train going down were pretty much the same as going up. Plus, that train is not air conditioned (but the windows do open) & it was a hot, muggy day in June so they regretted just staying on the train (it's a pretty long ride and it rolls along slowly). BTW I decided to move up here in 2011 & am still living here! Now I can watch the Northern Lights every winter (you usually don't see those on the cruises, they're more prevalent in the winter months & you need the darkness of winter to see them.)

How did you find about the additional going down the mountain trip? Very Interested
@emilyeast6924
@emilyeast6924 Жыл бұрын
@@PensHensandHoovesHomestead If I remember correctly, it was a choice when you signed up for the White Pass train through Celebrity - either ride all the way up & back down, or just go up and take a tour bus back down into the town of Skagway (and it listed what you would do on the bus tour, the salmon meal, the gold panning, the museum tour.) The bus also stopped on the way down by a large wooden sign that said Welcome to Alaska & let everyone on the bus who wanted to get a photo under it, do so. Most of the bus riders did that. Also, in the area where the meal / gold panning was located, it was set up with old buildings that looked like the Gold Rush days, as if you were in a gold panning camp. ALSO, there was this HUGE, old 'dog' chained up at one of the buildings (he was friendly) and you could go pet him. I couldn't believe how big he was. Come to find out, it was a WOLF we were petting! (By the time my friends got back into Skagway, they had very little time to explore before it was time to get back to the ship. I think all they did was go into the Red Onion Saloon & have a quick drink, before heading back to the ship.)

My husband & I took a 14 day, land/sea adventure with Princess line May 2022. It was amazing. We did the land first, highly recommend. We flew in on a Friday to Fairbanks, Alaska ( tours did not start until Sunday). For us as well from eastern USA , 4 hour time difference. We booked a tour to the Artic Circle for Saturday afternoon. A bucket list thrill for us. We both really enjoyed all the adventures on the land portion of the trip. Train ride to Denali Princess Lodge. Guided bus tour through Denali. In Seward we took an excursion to Kenji Peninsula amazing widelife. We were non stop on our Alaska trip we over did but felt once in a lifetime trip. Celebration for our 30th Anniversary! We were actually happy with visiting in May still a lot of snow. That's how I wanted to picture Alaska. Best vacation! Biggest mistake is not getting the balcony. I just returned 5/16 and luckily we had great weather our whole trip. We had an ocean view room, which had a large window, but not a balcony. Layered clothing w/ a waterproof shell a must. Get a shell for your backpack too. We did a helicopter glacier tour, which was probably the highlight of our trip, in Skagway and one passenger had no rain gear and was drenched while the rest of us w the gear were dry. It was a light rain but we were on the glacier for 40 minutes. Imagine if the rain was heavier. One day we would be in t-shirts and other day layers w long johns underneath. Not only is Alaska our biggest state, they will constantly remind you especially if you're from Texas, it costs quite a bit more to do everything. Especially to eat, but it is a must to try the Alaskan sea food. I couldn't get enough and it adds up quick. Also, so many breweries! Lots of great beer. Binoculars are a must, unless you have a newer phone. My wife has a Galaxy 21S and her phone zooms in so well they were better than binoculars. You may see whales, dolphins, bears and bald eagles from the ship as it cruises the inlet, another reason to get the balcony. So happy with our experience overall.

Another very helpful video Illana. Yes wet weather gear is absolutely necessary. On our cruise a naturalist told us most of the state is a "rain forest". Never new that one and yes in one day great clear skies and rain could happen several times a day. Watching for wildlife can really payoff. Saw two brown bears on the beach as we were in Glacier Bay. They actually challenged each other by getting on their hind legs and roaring at each other. Without watching as much as possible we would have missed that amazing wildlife experience.. My first Alaska Cruise was many years ago. I was single, and I booked it through "Single World." My mom was a CTC in NY and highly recommended it. She was right. The group tour guide & organizer was fabulous. The most outstanding trip adventure was a private company that put us in small boats (3 or 4 people) We got very close to the glacier, REALLY CLOSE. I was very cold surrounded by big & small blocks of ice (my hands a shaking as I remember it). The ice floats sometimes had animals sitting on them; THIS WAS VERY GOOG! When you're on the ship you have no idea what it's like being up close and personal with seals & other fauna! Luckily, we avoided any of the ice calving (breaking). The tiny boats would have flipped over, NOT GOOD! I Thank you for all the hard work I know you out in. I love watching & learning from them.

My piece of Alaskan cruise advice would be to have backup plans for excursions. I went to Alaska last May and the three excursions we booked ALL canceled. The most disheartening was a hike/boat trip in Skagway. Scrambling to find something else to do, we booked the White Pass Train Tour. Little did I know, that would turn out to be my FAVORITE part of the trip. The views were amazing and you can stand between the train cars and get some breathtaking pictures. Even though it was a blessing in disguise, I wish I would have been prepared with some backup ideas in each port.

@matthewhoffman9788
@matthewhoffman9788 Жыл бұрын
@@melissaduffy4 It normally sells out. Would definitely book this excursion early and not be too concerned about the "what ifs" regarding the weather. A dormant volcano could erupt and volcanic ash could also disrupt air travel as well as the views from the train. Are you going to cancel your cruise to Alaska? Of course you're not, so don't let something that you cannot control, like the weather, cause you to miss out on a great excursion! You'll need your passport if you take the train all the way up into the Yukon (Canada) and Caribou Crossing. We had some rain but regardless the views were still spectacular.

Be sure to bring at least one pair of shorts and a short sleeved or sleeveless to. On our first Alaska cruise, it was rainy and cold, but the last one wasn’t at all. Our second cruise was in July and we were expecting it to be cold like the last time! Wrong! We left the ship in Skagway and walked halfway down the wharf, to turn around and go back to the ship to change clothes. It was nearing 90 degrees that day. And we had a glassblowing excursion planned where it was so hot in there, we nearly suffocated! We didn’t bring shorts at all, but my husband brought two pairs of zip off pant leg nylon pants. Thanks Ilana 😊. We spent one overnight in Seattle before embarking. It gave my daughter a chance to see the Space Needle and Pikes market, etc.. When going into Glacier Bay, one side of the ship will face the glaciers and then turn around and let the other side of the ship face the glaciers…I agree that having a balcony room is helpful if you chose one. I spent a lot of time on our balcony and saw wildlife. Yes, the Rangers said you’re more likely to see the wildlife in the morning and I believe in the early evening. We saw a lot taking day hikes on our own, or a local bus transport. We appreciated the kind and knowledgeable Alaskan residents, and we bought locally made products. Thanks again to you and your viewers for all the helpful tips that made our trip enjoyable 😊

We just got back from our Alaskan cruise yesterday! A must in my opinion is getting a balcony room. Especially when you have young children and working your day around naps or kids not wanting to stand on the top deck to whale watch etc I wish we would have gotten a balcony room so we could still see the amazing sites like Tracy Arm Fjord from the comfort of our room while our kids could be comfortable as well. Overall this was an amazing cruise.

Totally agree on excursions and their associated costs. For many, the expense of the cruise can be a strain on budgets, especially when you include airfare. My cruise was free (won one) and we still spent around 3k for airfare and excursions. Not to mention another $800 for OBP, as Free at Sea for NCL was not offered as part of the prize. Eating in port in Alaska is expensive as well. Do your homework and really plan as best as you can. Otherwise, the expenses will add up quickly.

I've been on three Alaskan cruises, and I would absolutely pay careful attention to the land cruise itinerary offered by cruise lines. We went with Royal one time and spent way too much time on a bus. We could have easily planned that portion ourselves and taken trains. Also, and more importantly, only some cruise lines go through Glacier Bay National Park, and that is absolutely a must-see - far more interesting than the other glaciers. Holland America is one cruise line that is permitted to go through there, and we had a fabulous time. Going forward, I would only choose an itinerary that includes the all day glacier experience even though we are diamond on Royal. It's that amazing.

Such great tips! Also would recommend a small, even cheap pair of binoculars. It’s fun to see the wildlife a little more closely. This isn’t just for Alaska, but I found out about it when we were on our cruise with 14 family members. We all had balconies next to each other. And on Royal Caribbean, at least, you can remove part of the balcony partition which made all our balconies adjoining. It was amazing!! Such a great and private gathering space. I sailed to Alaska in September, 2022 and had a balcony stateroom. I was only on my balcony a very small amount of time. It was aft and although the sky and ocean were beautiful, I was pretty much seeing wake and not much else most of the time. The ship I was on has a deck 8 waterfront with sofas and chairs and I spent the VAST majority of my time out there. Happily. It was fun to get excited with my fellow passengers when a whale or other animal showed up. If I were to do it again, I'd likely book an inside cabin and save that money for other travel.

I didn’t think i would be in my room much and normally wasn’t because i was on a quilting cruise. However, anytime I went back to my room for a few items. I would see the amazing scenery and stop and sit on the deck for that reason. Thank you for all your great tips. You don't need to pack like yr going to the Antarctic. Us Alaskans can spot the tourists on what they wear. A good coat that's waterproof and a hat and gloves. Pants and sweaters are good choices. Waterproof hiking boots or good shoes. If you go in May its still break up season and its muddy. Here in Homer its still in the 40s and had snow flurries 2 weeks ago. I'd pick a cruise middle of june to middle of August. September and October the weather is already changing and could possibly be snow.

We overpacked thinking the weather would be colder and rainy. Skagway train ride was exceptional with stunning views. Juneau whale watching tour was fun with more majestic views and spotting a whale was fantastic. We were disappointed that we took a totem pole excursion that failed to take us to Creek Street early enough to really explore Ketchikan. I learned a lot to better prepare for our cruise from your videos.

We had amazing weather on this cruise! We had an inside cabin but felt surprisingly fine about it. We were only in there to sleep. Even though the ship was fully booked, we found plenty of places to sit and enjoy the scenery. Lots of quiet places to find. Even in Glacier Bay when everyone was on the public decks, we still had easy access to all the amazing scenery. I heard another reviewer who mentioned that he stayed in an inside cabin and booked a private cabana for his HAL cruise. The Koningsdam staff was wonderful. And the beds are extremely comfortable. Great wifi and ac in the cabin.

Book a balcony mid-ship. Eat at the ports for local sea food. Alaska was our first cruise and I was unaware that cruise ship food would be the same no matter where you cruise. On the balcony I had a young dolphin staring up at me swimming along side the ship in a very playful manner for about 30 seconds. An experience I never would have had with an inside cabin. One more tip, at least on Princess, get a coffee card and drink real coffee from the coffee shop instead of the stuff from concentrate in the buffet and dining rooms. Apparently the coffee from concentrate is common on cruise ships and it is bad.

Just got back from an Alaskan cruise on Princess that left on the 20th. Made sure everyone had rain gear and clothes for colder temps. So, of course, it was amazing weather for the entire time and never rained. Oh well, better to be prepared than not. My wife did make the mistake of not bringing enough warmer weather gear, though souvenir stores were happy to help in that regard. Sunglasses were essential. My suggestion would be to make sure you have enough luggage space to bring things home. Had to buy an additional suitcase as we hadn't accounted for that.

Hi. Love your channel. Even though I consider myself a seasoned cruiser, there are always helpful tips which I can incorporate in my future cruises. I did an amazing NCL cruise in Alaska this past May - and so glad that I had done my own research and used my experiences from previous cruises (albeit warm weather cruises) to prepare for Alaska. All the tips you covered in this video are spot on; especially, not spending a few extra hundred bucks to get a room with a balcony. My little interior studio cabin was lovely and had a 24-hour live video feed to the outside of the ship, and an exceptional private lounge for three of the floors in the interior of the ship. I still regret not having gotten a room with a balcony. Other favorite cruises: A NCL cruise in the Mediterranean in September 2015 with my Mom and my Sister. Hands-down, memories of a life time especially as Mom passed away in Feb 2021. Next cruise: I am planning a NCL cruise through the Panama Canal. No - I don't work for NCL, but after cruising on other cruise lines, NCL ranks at the top with me. Thank you for your videos - and I will be watching more content in prep for Panama. Cheers and safe cruising!

Hi ILana (sorry if I misspelled your name!)! I’ve done two Alaska cruises so far: the first one was on the Majestic Princess, and my second Alaska cruise was with Norwegian on the Encore. While I loved both, I found myself enjoying Norwegian the most. Both itineraries were pretty much identical, but it seemed like the docks were completely different. Being a solo cruiser, I was wild about the solo cabin neighborhood that the Encore offers. Being a native Pacific Northwester, I’m accustomed to the cold and rain, so I made sure to pack layers. You’re right, there can be days where you’ll encounter some choppy seas, so if you’re susceptible to motion sickness, most definitely be sure to prepare. I don’t typically experience motion sickness - even in severe weather - however, I pack motion sickness remedies anyway. You never know if things are going to change with your body or not - OR maybe you run into a fellow passenger who forgot to pack theirs. I like being prepared for any circumstance. Finally, I can’t wait to try HAL. They’re next on my list for an Alaska cruise.

We went to Vancouver to catch a cruise to Alaska with Celebrity. The cruise was amazing. As for Air Canada, I will never fly with them again. They caused us to miss our night in Vancouver before our cruise. So it was a hurried and worried get to the cruise port experience that morning. We are planning another Alaska cruise but this time out of Washington. We did stay 2 nights after the cruise in Vancouver and enjoyed that very much. We packed layers but didn’t bring a big bulky coat. We went in September and the weather was great. Unfortunately many of the excursions sold out so fast or were just too expensive. But we did a couple of them and enjoyed them. Be prepared for expensive restaurants at the ports. We just eat on the ship because the food was excellent and paid for 😂❤

A very helpful video before my first cruise, thank you. My cousin and his wife cruise twice a year and offered a piece of advice - DO NOT depart the ship with an apple from the ship, carrots, etc. You will be pulled over for full search by customs as you cannot take produce into a foreign country. If taking snacks they have to be commercially packaged, ie. individually wrapped protein bars, etc. I would have never thought of this and I am one that would have likely grabbed an apple or banana to go.

We just got back from The Royal Princess the same week you were in Alaska.....our ships followed each other ! I would add "bring shorts" just in case..... we brought shorts and I actually got tan on our Glacier Bay National Park day! the weather, the entire week, was SO amazing. Also, if you can do a balcony, get a balcony.... totally worth it !! Also, in Skagway we did the Whites Pass railroad with the bus tour first to the Yukon. That was THE most amazing day trip...... the Yukon is like being on another planet.... truly amazing.

We really enjoy your vlogs. They have given us a plethora of invaluable information. We cruised to Alaska in 2015 on Celebrity for 7 days. We're going back to Alaska in May 2024 for 13 days (6 days land tour) on Princess out of Vancouver. Thanks for all the good info.

I think that the need to fly in the day before really depends on how far you have to travel. I live in Phoenix, AZ. If I am leaving from a port on the east coast, I fly the day before. But, if I am leaving from a California port, I fly in the morning of the cruise because even if my one-hour flight gets cancelled, there are many other flights to choose from.

We are going on first cruise in September. Vancouver-Alaska on Koningsdam. This is how I started watching your chanel back in March. Thank you for all of your insights. Being newbie to cruising, we have scheduled all of our excursion while booking. The more I listen to others the less regrets we have to have booked different experiences ahead of time.

Great video! I would suggest Anchorage (Whittier and Seward) for a North - South cruise terminating in Vancouver (or vice-versa). You typically get more ports, and more time in each port. These cruises on Princess and Holland America also include Glacier Bay which is incredible! Another big benefit, at least on Princess in Whittier, is embarkation. You essentially get off your bus or train from Anchorage (the views on both are beautiful!) or your Land/Cruise trip and walk on the ship. Your bags are taken from the bus / train to the boat for you, and going through check in takes all of 5 minutes.
