Rails are for hanging sliding barn doors. They can be found at your local big box hardware store. I special ordered these from Menards. 18 feet required special order.

Hello George, just looked at your video. Do you know the name of that type of track? I wondered why you used 2 winches and not one with a pulley system to distribute the weight across the platform? I'm trying to come up with an idea to create a lift for my mom to get to the first floor.

I used two winches for safety. The lift is designed so that if either “winch system” fails. The winch break, pulleys, cabling etc. are two separate systems. If either fail on any way, the other will still work and keep the lift from falling.

I didn't notice the same issue was raised by others, sorry for the repeat question. If there's a counterweight won't that give you the safety factor? With the counter-weight being equal to the intended load and platform weight, if there's a failure of the winch, it should cause it to "fall" up. As mentioned you video was among many others I've looked at, as I have never attempted such a project before. What's the name of the type of track you're using?

The track was purchased at the local big box hardware store. It is normally used to support a sliding barn door. If I understand your comments.... The counter weight if equal to the load plus the cargo will indeed fall up when there is no cargo. I designed this to have about 100 pounds net load on the wenches when empty. The box is about 250 pounds and the counter weight is about 150 pounds

Thanks for the nice comment, sorry, I don’t have written plans, nor do I build parts for folks.... this video will give you a goood idea of how I did it. I have made several improvements, I really should do a detailed video series on the thing. The lift has proved to be very reliable, trouble free and very useful. I don’t mind conversing with you if you send an email

I don’t recall the brand. I purchased them from Northern Tool and Equipment. 1500 pound capacity 120V AC. They are about $200 each.
