This is a perfect illustration of why "animal hoarders" can't claim to be "animal lovers". No animal lover would ever keep an animal in such appalling conditions, all while going out of their way to acquire *more* animals. To animal hoarders, an animal is just another thing to fill whatever hole it is they're trying to fill. Loving this channel, btw! Keep it up!

Back in 2003, I lived just a short distance away from a so called big cat sanctuary in the smallest county in rural IL. Literally no one was shocked when the man in charge was mauled to death by one of the cats, and two tigers ended up being shot by law enforcement. As with any of these cases, my sympathy goes to the animals, and not the people who make a hobby out of keeping them in completely inadequate and often cruel conditions.

I grew up mostly in Hawaii but my dad owned a few companies here in Ontario Canada and as such at age 10 so about 1991 give or take a man named Dan moved into the house next door and he had a Siberian Tiger named Lucian … once my mom got over her panic I was allowed to meet Lucian and up until I was almost 19 he was just like having an extra large dog living next door … he’d come swim in our pool sometimes … he’d hop the fence and come sunbathe on our patio lol … as it turned out tho in 2008 the laws changed and he had to relocate Lucian which proved to be difficult because he had been “too domesticated” and wouldn’t survive with other tigers they said … ultimately Lucian was put down but to this day when I look at the pics of him and I together I’m always transformed back to a place in time where I can still smell the faint sour odour in his fur… As a realist I completely understand and agree that certain animals (lions and tigers and bears (oh my! Haha) etc) are just not meant to be living in homes with humans but I will fully admit that living next to one for almost 10yrs was beyond hella cool ANNNNND it makes for some fkng awesome stories 👍🏻😛

@@truth4004 not only dolphins. Japanese are slaughtering tuna, and many other endangered marine species. The same goes with cats. It may be considered the land of cuteness and everything people want but there is a reason why you can barely see wild cats. If you go to Okinawa, you will see plenty of hungry cats begging for food and plenty of signs that depict cats as dangerous and not to feed them. There is also a huge problem of pollution but we are getting off topic. Japan is ranked number 2 worldwide regarding plastic pollution. For such a small country it is just crazy. I hate that culture of packing EVERY SINGLE biscuit into a plastic wrap. Fruits and vegs are plastified. Then you get a plastic bag and some tape to cover those and then another bigger plastic bag to carry those, that is nuts 😅

Then as public perception of her changed and people saw these things as animal abuse she changed her business to be the Missouri primate foundation to make it come off better. She would breed chimpanzees and they would get loose all the time one of them even being shot and killed by a neighbor who felt his life was in danger. Peta got a judge to order her to hand over all the chimpanzees so they could go to an actual rescue and with the help of US Marshals that finally happened recently. But there's nothing like getting a robocall from the police department warning residence that there are chimpanzees on the loose and to stay inside until they're caught...

This is why we can't have nice things. Or rather, this is why nice people and nice animals can't have each other, no matter how ideal the circumstances. My aunt and uncle raised a red fox kit they found in a den near their rural home, barely old enough to have her eyes open and barely alive. Her two siblings were dead, so apparently something happened to their mother and their father obviously couldn't lactate nor feed them meat they were too young to eat. My aunt cared for little Vicki day and night, trying out various milk concoctions until she found one that didn't cause diarrhea and promoted steady growth. Vicki even slept with them the first few weeks. They couldn't have children of their own so of course they fell completely in love with the tiny vixen. She grew up to be a wonderful family member, along with the dog and cat already there. There was concern about her going outside unsupervised, because if she ran off she wouldn't know how to survive in the wild, so my uncle built a huge and luxurious enclosure that all 3 animals could go out to any time they wanted, through the doggie door flap (yes he put the bottom foot of chicken wire in the ground and bent inward because Vicki was a digger like any fox). And they all lived happily ever after ......or a few years anyway ...... when a busybody neighbor heard about Vicki. She lived almost a mile down the road and had nothing whatsoever to fear, but she called the police, freaking out about rabies and what-not. Long story short, Vicki was injected with pentobarbital less than 48 hours later, by a county animal control vet who didn't even want to do it, said Vicki was friendlier and healthier than a lot of dogs he had to give back to their terrible owners, because they had a "right" to keep their "property." No, people should NOT be able to BUY AND SELL undomesticated and potentially dangerous animals, or even ones that are likely to be more unpleasant than buyers expect (like foxes because they really stink, and yes, love to dig). Yes, some places in America are way too lenient with things like jumbo-size carnivores. It's horrific. It's also just so sad that some places over-correct to the point that there are no exceptions possible, not even for the most suitable caregivers.

Great job researching Ligertown. We are originally from southeast Idaho and gave our band a tongue-in-cheek name, referencing the event and our hometown. The story behind this, however, is very tragic. Thanks for a great documentary.

Something very similar to this happened near where I live a few years back. This guy In Zanesville OH had all these exotic animals. He let them all loose and killed him self one day. The cops had fun that day as an African safari was brought straight to them. It was tragic.

It is utterly DISGUSTING that these poor animals were allowed to stay with their abusers and eventually forced to succumb to the absolutely blatant inability these people had to properly care for & provide for these beautiful, innocent creatures!!! Shameful, just shameful and heartbreaking!!!

It's sad that this area is known for such a tragedy because it's beautiful. A few months before this happened my boyfriend and I took a trip to Lava Hot Springs on the recommendation of a friend. The town is full of natural hot springs that have been directed into pools where you can go and soak. In the basement of our hotel there were private rooms where the hot springs ran into private rooms with hot tubs in them. It was an amazing and relaxing weekend and the local area shops and restaurants were really quaint. There were signs for the animal compound but I've never been a fan of zoos so we had no interest in that. I was very sad to hear what happened there a few months later and the town got a bad rap because people were afraid to go there. Horrific that these animals lived and died the way they did.
