Ligeti Piano Concerto (Aimard live with Reinbert de Leeuw)

György Ligeti's only piano concerto was written between 1985 and 1988.

The names Aimard and Ligeti are forever linked in my head, since I heard Aimard play the complete Études in the Conservatory of The Hague. It was a most impressive concert, the impact of these pieces was enormous - even when I listen to this concerto, my only thought is: ah but I should listen to Aimard's Études again...

Wow, did he play from the score? Yes, he's easily the best performer of Ligeti on the piano. Most just play the notes (which is obviously no mean feat in its own right etc), he introduces variety of color, subtleties of orchestration, sensitivity to style (whether it's jazz-inflected or imitative of gamelan etc) etc The piano part in the first movement certainly sounds like it could be one of the etudes, but the second movement is the Ligeti made famous by Kubrick: eerie, suspenseful otherness, not unlike Bartok's "night music" but far more extreme... It's a difficult work: I'm a big fan of both the composer AND of African drum music that inspired many of the rhythms here, but it still took me a good few listens to get into it.

He's pretty good, but you guys should check the breath-taking recording by Ensemble Modern and Ueli Wiget... :)

תודה רבה על ההמלצה, היא נושאת משקל מיוחד כשהיא באה ממבצע ליגטי ברמתך! אשתדל למצוא את ההקלטה אפשר לעניין אותך בביצוע ליגטי קצת לא שגרתי? העלתי הקלטה של שלושה מן האטיודים שאתה אולי לא מכיר, של פסנתרן סובייטי גדול ובלתי מוכר שלמד אותם לקראת סוף חייו כשהוא סבל מנזק בלתי הפיך באצבע ביד ימין kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJSleKWIgKeXoKs זה נכון שהוא לוקח טמפי קצת איטיים אבל ב5 ו6 זה עובד לעניות דעתי (ב4 פחות). בכל אופן, אנטולי וודרניקוב היה חבר של ריכטר ועוזר של פרוקופייב והותיר הקלטות פשוט מופתיות של מוסיקה מהמאה ה20 כמו פרוקופייב, שוסטקוביץ׳, סטרווינסקי, דביסי, הינדמית׳ ואף אוסטבולסקאיה וטיפט. מעטים מכירים אותו וחבל חשבתי שדווקא אותך הוא עלול לעניין, ולאו דווקא בזכות הליגטי שכאמור זה קצת ״קיוריוסיטי״ בדיסקוגרפיה הענפה שלו
