Light aircraft crash landing

This was filmed from my cockpit at a very popular fly in recently as I awaited my turn to line up. I asked the permission of the pilot of the crashed aeroplane before posting this clip.
A Tiger Moth had crashed on takeoff earlier and the AAIB closed the runway for several hours whilst an investigation was carried out. Several of us met up in the shade of my wing and passed the time talking about all things concerned with flying whilst patiently waiting for the runway to be opened. Eventually we were good to go but unfortunately, as you will see, the canopy was not properly secured on Tango Echo which directly caused the crash at the threshold.
I spoke to the pilot after the accident, a very experienced aviator, who explained that this was his first accident in 50 years of flying. We were relieved he was uninjured especially as he was one of the guys we were laughing and having a great social time with in the shade of our wing.
He later explained how badly the open canopy affected the airflow over the elevator that resulted in a high sink rate whilst his angle of attack voice alert was shouting at him to push push push. You will see from the slo mo just how open the canopy had become.
When all is said, he did a great job getting back on the ground and walking away from what could have been a far more serious accident. He did say he would install a fail safe for the canopy latches and fully intends getting Tango Echo back into the air.
If there is a lesson to be learned, it ought to be, check you've done your checks. Safe flying everyone.

We had the canopy open on one of those here in Australia, pilot said it basically stopped flying. He managed to dive it to the ground and land fast in a paddock, but ended up upside down and injured, and struggling to get out.

Well, to be honest, she couldn't have said anything more appropriate. Indelicate language? I think she gets the point across perfectly - she could have shouted, "pan pan pan, pan pan pan, pan pan pan", but, "shit, shit, shit" says so much more and in far less time! I think that should be officially recognised as an SOS signal :)

Summary: The pilot was at the hold ready for departure when the airfield was closed because of an accident. He shut the aircraft down and opened the canopy. The airfield reopened after approximately three hours and the pilot repeated his pre-takeoff checks with the exception of a visual check of the canopy locks, which were behind his shoulders. The canopy opened after takeoff and the pilot reported that he struggled to gain height despite using full power. He concentrated on flying the aircraft and commenced a left hand circuit to return to the runway. He reported that control difficulties due to the canopy being open prevented him from achieving a normal flare. The aircraft landed heavily, damaging the landing gear and propeller. The pilot concluded that the canopy had been left unlocked and he had not identified the error because he did not check the locks before takeoff. He considered that he had not taken enough time to ensure the pre-takeoff checks were properly carried out and that, given the break, the checks should have be started again from the beginning, despite any time pressure. You can hear the pilot of TE calling out the problem at 0:50. Later on he calls downwind and final. If he's able to fly a circuit then it doesn't seem likely the airflow was significantly interrupted by the open canopy.
@SuperRealityKid
@SuperRealityKid 10 ай бұрын
The airflow would have been disproportionately disrupted during the flare. This is actually what the pilot reported to me. He said he run out of back stick as he tried to keep the nose up.

if i remember right, there was a similar canopy latch safety issue wight the early rutan kit planes, and the rutans were contacting the kit owners to give them the hardware that fixes the problem. it may seem like a small thing, but it could be very serious. glad no one was hurt.
@tsmgguy

Right, the fuselage also develops lift, which is destroyed when the canopy comes open. It's like deploying a speed brake. It's impossible to close the canopy because air pressure under it is too great to overcome.
@G56AG
@G56AG 8 жыл бұрын
Maybe the canopy spoiled the airflow over the elevator, but it looks suspiciously like the pilot was distracted by the problem and forgot the golden rule, first and foremost fly the airplane!
@DomAviationChannel
@DomAviationChannel 7 жыл бұрын
I guess he noticed it after departure or midair that the canopy wasn´t properly closed. I would have gained altitude 3000ft at least than properly trimed the airplane and than tried to close the canopy. Anyway a landing you can walk away from is a good landing.
@nightwaves3203
@nightwaves3203 7 жыл бұрын
The canopy spoiling the airflow over the elevator also includes the tail surfaces equating to pretty much like icing on the tail which the flight of the aircraft depends on. Icing or canopy like that ruining the airflow over the tail surface gives crashing as one of the stories resulting.

G56AG the canopy creates lift just like the wing. It raised up throwing off the pilot's inputs, probably spoiling the airflow over the elevator. I wonder if the pilot could have held it down with one hand while flying the plane with the other. It would be interesting to see what the British aircraft authority, like our FAA, had to say.
@gtc1961

doubt it...biggest problem, as you said, with a situation like this is distraction...pilots are instructed FROM DAY ONE to fly the airplane, FLY THE AIRPLANE. My instructors would often put me under the hood and sing the most insane songs and play with all kinds of stuff to get me distracted.

Does the canopy open restrict power on G-CUTE like the RV's tend to? I would imagine with the canopy in the airflow and a potential limit on available power it would be a pig to handle. But he walked away so he can fly another day

Dynaero MCR... Surprisingly, a lot of so called "expert pilots" told us what happened and what the pilot failed to do, but even don't know what is the type of the ultralight aircraft...On MCR two seaters, VLA and UL, the canopy has a lockable hook on each side. If only one is not shut, the aircraft is perfectly flyable. If both are open, it begins to open when rolling, and better to abort take off...In my case, as it happened once, I didn't try to take off and stopped! I would bet that it was hot that day and the pilot forgot to lock both sides, like it had happened to me, an the canopy popped up when rolling, but it is just my opinion!
