Video compilation of artillerymen during conducting live fire training exercises with the GIAT LG1, M102 and M119A3 105mm howitzers.
With a well-trained crew, a 105 mm-Howitzer can launch around ten shells per minute, in a distance of up to 15 kilometers.
Lightweight artillery can be easily airlifted by helicopter, or dropped by parachute, it is easier to change azimuth of fire and does not need a recoil pit.

I went to gun school at fort sill Oklahoma. In the first few days there we saw a demonstration of the capabilities of a good gun crew. They fired the first shot almost straight up, ran the barrel down to a direct shot at a circle of rocks on the side of a hill. One of them had a stopwatch and at the appropriate time said fire. Both rounds hit inside the circle at exactly the same time. I was fairly impressed

Not really in WW2 the Dreaded 88 could get off in the high 20 rounds per minute. A few elite gunners got it even higher. The Dreaded 88 is a multi role piece of artillery and the 105's of today are not. The weights of both ammo are similar BUT I like the 105mm. But more importantly is ammo technology being used now is getting so much better in the 2020's.

M102 is Vietnam era, not WW2. The advantage of the gun is it could shoot a full circle without needing to be relaid. In fact I couldn't see any M102s in this video. This video shows training exercises, which can be far different from reality. I was in Vietnam on the M102. A better challenge would be for them to be firing with little sleep, in the middle of a moonless night, in a down pour with lightning all about up in the mountains in a position which is just a big mud hole. Using stakes with a green light on one and a red light on the other for the azimuth. Using a field phone for communication from the FDC. Then relaying that information to your crew. Which at times can be different numbers for each round fired and sometimes each gun can be given a different set of numbers. All this must be done on the QT.

@chloehennessey6813
@chloehennessey6813 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on what maintenance you speak of. There are some things that need to be done every 50 rounds, 100 rounds etc. some checks have to be done every 500 rounds. Generally the piece is given over to civilian contractors for major maintenance. All they can do is user maintenance. Grease, oil, clean etc.
