On Monday, October 24, 2022, the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies hosted Asmaa AbuMezied, Yousef Aljamal, and Jehad Abusalim for conversation moderated by Helga Tawil-Souri about the new anthology Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire.
In his opening remarks, Jehad, the editor of the collection, said the book project seeks to “lessen the distance” from Gaza by having Gazan's participate and share their stories.
Yousef said his chapter “challenges this stereotype of abstract statistics and not personal experiences” by showing generational trauma and how the realities in Gaza impact his family. Asmaa discussed the evolution of Gazan identity, specifically using the example of Palestinian farmers.
