Absolutely beautiful film, it was like looking at a moving painting tremendous, does the soundtrack was perfect the loop was quite nice but when the violin came in I started to cry, watching this I began thinking of all the people in my life I have lost, it was a tribute to their memory, I realize some people don't understand abstract filmmaking or experimental filmmaking doesn't really matter what you've done here is absolutely extraordinary, up there with some of the best, Stan Breckenridge, Maya Darren, the Whitney Brothers, and the like thank you for posting this, I have watched this several times, and we'll watch it several more

J'adore ce film ! ... "Light Is Calling" me tire encore presque des larmes... A chaque fois que je le revoit... Et moi, verser une larme çà m'arriva pas souvent, c'est l'effet de l'Olanzapine que je prend tous les soir dans l'espoir de rester libre... J'en pleure à nous veau ce soir en le revoyant... I love that movie ! ... Without doubt the beautiful film that I saw at the festival of different cinemas ( Paris) ... I was already a fan of "Footprints" first discovered on TV in SNARK while I was a student then finally seen in 16mm at 102 rue d'Alembert (Grenoble) during an evening dedicated to Bill Morrison... The guy is nice too... "Light Is Calling" still almost brings tears to my eyes... Every time I see him again... And for me, shedding a tear doesn't happen often, it's the effect of the Olanzapine that I take every evening in the hope of staying free... I'm in tears this evening when I see him again...

Brilliant - I watched this almost every night for years before bed, when hovering right between waking and sleeping - the perfect time for Decasia as well, though the mood in that one is a shade more ominous. I also love 'The Unchanging Sea' - here's hoping you make a zillion more. You're the specter of Stan Brakhage realized, bettered, bested, and beyond.

In this scene from The Bells, the soldier pulls the girl out of a pile of hay. Here, he seemingly pulls her out of a pile of "decay." An interesting and serendipitous parallel. No doubt it is why Morrison selected this scene. I'm not a film buff, but seeing the original felt like "peeking behind the curtain", and perhaps detracted from my experience of Morrison's film. Maybe preserved copies of Morrison's source material should be view for their own sake, not to augment his films. I'm not sure if I will seek out other source materials of his films. Will I watch "The Bells"? Maybe. But it will be for Barrymore and Karloff.

@@AlexMagma I meant something different. The movie was digitized 18 years ago. In those 18 years the film degraded more.

It's an old movie film reel that has degraded over time, so the scenes you're seeing are actual movie scenes amongst the decaying film.
@MewtwoM6 жыл бұрын
I've seen a version of this film before it was badly decayed, and I can tell you it is as stated, a fragment of the 1926 film The Bells. The Bells was a murder/mystery film starring Lionel Barrymore and Boris Karloff, and includes the two stars (Lola Todd and Edward Phillips) seen in the badly decayed footage.
@davidfkennedy78166 жыл бұрын
A year late but whatever. To me it’s a film about aging and the passage of time. Movies and pictures are like memories, and as we get older they get farther away from what actually happened and we remember more how things feel. We can’t make out the details of these scenes, but we can remember the couple falling in love.

It's just some old romance movie with a grimy overlay and some weird music.
@danfadil7 жыл бұрын
What you're seeing visually isn't "a grimy overlay", but the showcasing the decay of old media. The description even says it was played from a 35mm film. It was photographically replicated from the original, and presented in a new style altering the meaning. I think the solo violin is mixed far too high though.
@operator13387 жыл бұрын
Dan Fadil Oh I see. That makes it a little more interesting I guess.
@MewtwoM6 жыл бұрын
The version of this film that I saw on a DVD was in better condition (though far from 100% complete), and it had a completely different musical score (an organ playing the music) which gave it an overall creepy tone, but nothing like what's in this decayed fragment.
@666chainsawkiller6665 жыл бұрын
@@danfadil 100% agree on that mix of the solo violin. I don't understand why they went with this mix. :/
