This is a really good way to learn about the creative side of filmmaking, it's much easier for people to develop their own style and tastes by watching completely non-subjective content like this. I do as many of my own test shoots as I can but I don't have the time or the budget to hire all of that equipment. Nice work Film Riot, I'd really like to see more videos like this.

Er, loved the comparo, thank you as always Film Riot; but as an old school 35mm photographer I'm wondering which sensor size do these focal lengths apply to? I guess super 35 or APS-C, but just to be sure. The 85mm clearly wins (more flattering), but on a full frame 35mm camera, I think I prefer 105mm ;-))

As cool and useful this video is one aspect that this video did not answer that I would be curious about is the price for the different types of lights shown as well as the portability for each one of the different types of lights as far as speed for set up & take down for each type of light. Are these lights only useful in a set location inside or can they be easily moved from one location to the next and how easy is it if you are trying to light a scene outside with the lights. What would be you recommendation for a portable light set up should you go outside and it is a night scene outside and doing a portrait scene but still want the background to show up such as a sunset or sunrise set up and all you have is a limited budget and only battery operated lights but don't want the harsh light of the flash? There is no problem finding locations for lights because you have stands and other places to direct the light but don't know how to set up the lights with no places to plug in power cords.

It's not about focal lengths but about the distance from the lens to the subject. If you shoot with 50mm, then switch to 16mm and crop in, the face would like the same. It's a misconception really.

Yeah I got that, but in most cases the most dramatic thing a lens changes is the actors relationship with the background. Seems like a test like this is useful only to people who want to film a person in front of a black wall :D Anyway I'm just messing with you. Have a good one :D

There's an interesting misconception here that you're taught as part of learn-photography-on-the-internet 101: that longer focal lengths create compression of an image. In truth, *longer distance from your subject creates that compression.* If you were to place your camera 25 feet from your subject and take two shots: one with a 35mm lens and one with a 100mm lens, then crop the 35mm shot in post to fit the field of view of the 100mm, you would see that the compression is identical. Inversely, if you were to place your camera 5 feet from your subject and take one shot with the 35mm, and many (stitched-together) shots with the 100mm, you'll find that you get the same decompression and facial distortion as is associated with wide angle lenses - in both images. Here, they may vary slightly given that the field of view of the 35mm lens may concentrate onto the sensor in a place that is farther or closer than your tripod's pivot point, which is acting as your (sort of) center point of light concentration for the 100mm shots. If it doesn't really seem right, just imagine you're looking at two people: one in the midground and one in the foreground. As you move closer to the person in the midground, you'll see the space between them, in your field of view, increase. As you back up, the opposite. It's the same with lenses. It's not that a telephoto lens is creating compression. The distance creates compression and you're magnifying the incoming light to see that compression up close. Close one of your eyes right now and move your palm closer and farther away from your one open eye. You'll see your fingers bend away and your palm get much, much bigger respectively, just as would happen with an ultra-wide lens (or a 100mm, for that matter.)
