In a world filled with noise, distractions and chaos, a number of artists seek to push the boundaries of perception and experience. The Light and Space movement of the 1960s explored minimalism with a uniquely Californian spin - with a keen attention to the interaction of light and space. Crucially, the materials these artists relied on to create these perceptual experiences emerged from the postwar aerospace industry and its advances.

Beautiful film about beautiful work. Anyone who denigrated these artists at the time were perhaps a tad envious of their living in the light, experiencing the sea and sky in such an essential way. I like the final comment, that art can be some sort of respite from the world and life in it, this work is other, it gives you space to be. Hats off to all the artists and the film makers who have captured it all so well ❤️

A recent article about Robert Irwin in the NYTimes brought me to my initial discovery of Robert Irwin. This video is a very informative extension of that. Wonderful to learn about Helen Pashgian and to reacquaint with Larry Bell's art. // I am reminded of an afternoon when the western sky in my town turned to a distinct yellow color. It was something I had to experience, so I parked the car and spent a half hour looking at it. I noticed that no one else seemed to be interested in this phenomenal event.

One of the best videos I have seen in a long time. Light has always provided "art" for me and I have an idea I wish I could manifest.

It's provided art for you; art you struggle to manifest? For me, light has always denoted, meant, or evinced 'art'. Perhaps?

The spherical light sculptures at 17:30 is kinda like quantum entanglement in a way. All states existing at once though we can only access one at a time depending on the angle you view it at

Yes there is a lot of pigeonholing. It must frustrate the artists.

Although interesting I don't buy into the idea that artists are philosophers. Attempts to justify their work on a philosophical basis appear primitive and futile. However what can you expect when Western Philosophy has all but imploded and eliminated itself as relativism consumes its own justification when applied to itself. It is good to see people trying to rescue philosophy- but without words it's a futile effort however interesting, thoughtful and surprising their efforts. Art should stand on its own strengh rather than try to justify itself on the basis, at times, of what seems little more than cod philosophy. These creations are indeed art but they're spoilt by dressing them up in borrowed clothes.

my answer judging by this persons comment: “and those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche. art moves people in different ways.. i for one found this incredibly poetic and inspirational. but to each their own i guess 🤷
