Vector video please! I want to make a whole video about it myself, but I'm sure I could pick up a few cool tricks from you and your approach. Loving this series

so so inspiring ! lots of ideas to chew on - all the different choices remind me so much of the headspace when designing norns & max patches. it's also giving me big time :ableton looking over shoulder to bitwig meme: are the flourish quantizers set to octave + fifths ? I almost thought it was the harmonic series but that would get real crunchy in the high ranges & I will +1 the vector seq vid - v curious about how you compose sequences & melodies
@Lightbath7 ай бұрын
andrew cs! 🙏 such a fan of your work 🩵 I so wish I had used that looking over the shoulder meme in this video 😆 And yes, Flourish is just roots and fifths as I want higher registers to be available without going any further than a single 'click' forward in the circle of 5ths. Anything more is too harmonically challenging for my taste. Crunchbath.

It is very inspiring to see this project up close. I am always rethinking how to travel lighter. I've been travelling with a lot of equipment as a independent artist for a few years now and I understand well the experience you share in this series 😅. After these months with this setup, would you change anything? Or do you feel that everything worked as planned? Thanks for sharing! 🙌🌠

I’m already working on the third iteration of my hybrid system. In fact, the work has split into two distinct systems. I need lots more work and time to sort it all out (version 2 took a year) so I won’t share any details yet, but I expect to make some videos when ready 🤙

Fell in love with Bitwig a few years ago, but havent pulled the trigger on the full suite, but I am definitely going to now. AND the Intech midi controllers are also on my list, as they are definitely more up-to-date than my Livid OHM RGB. Peace.
@ganders85877 ай бұрын
That's awesome - I particularly like what you were explaining at 3:00 - I was trying to do exactly that with Ableton, but the only way I could find to do it was to copy the VST 5 times into a channel mixer, and then automate which mix you hear. Do you know if it's possible any other way? (Ideally, closer to the bitwig way described in the video...)

Ah, the per note random. I just looked this up and see that someone on Reddit suggested using the LFO device set to Random with the R button enabled. This is retrigger so it’ll generate a new random value every time. Someone also recommended a Max for Live device called ‘MIDI Sample and Hold 1.1’ that is basically a per note random generator.
@alejandropnt7 ай бұрын
There's a trick with the expression controller device, selecting random instead of pressure etc Also a very nice m4l device made by s8jfou that does note random
@Lightbath7 ай бұрын
Oh right! I forgot that in Live 12 ‘Expression Control’ has been updated so that it has a ‘Random’ tab and I just checked and it does put out a new value on each MIDI note received. You can also set Rise and Fall times, which is nice.

Thanks for the walkthrough. Bitwig is such an awesome playground. One thing which confuses me with your setup here is the Disting Ex voices. Surely the benefit of hardware is that it’s hands-on and playable? The distings are amazing, but kinda horrible to use, so I don’t understand why you wouldn’t just host those voices in vcv rack or use VSTs in Bitwig?
@Lightbath7 ай бұрын
I could probably manage Rings in VCV just the same, but the Multiplaits application might be challenging as it relies on Just Friends and Disting’s separation of MIDI note and coarse tune v/oct. I wonder if JF envelopes into ES-9 would work to control VCAs in VCV Rack or if latency would get weird. I also wonder if I could repitch it the way I’m doing with the Disting so that regardless of MIDI note received the coarse tuning can be moved around via v/oct. With the Mutable module and VCV’s version there’s only one way of addressing pitch CV and that’s the v/oct input. Coarse tune isn’t addressable separately from the MIDI note. That’s what’s unique about the Disting’s implementation of MIDI and CV used together. But yeah, I could conceivably modulate the coarse tune knob with Bitwig’s Parameter Sequencer to accurately nail the desired pitches for Flourish. I guess the next step is to test Just Friends for enveloping VCAs in VCV.
@Jimantronic7 ай бұрын
@@Lightbath cheers for the reply, yeah, that sounds like a plan, or alternatively have the envelopes and VCAs in hardware and the sound sources coming from the computer via the ES-9. I think that unless you're doing very precise drum parts the latency from splitting it up like that is probably not a problem, but if it is, then having the VCAs and envelopes in the same realm should mitigate a lot of the issue.
@Lightbath7 ай бұрын
@Jimantronic yeah, that’s an idea - have the VCAs be in the rack, too. I vaguely remember trying to do this back in 2019 or 2020 and having issues with things not lining up, but the Macbook Pro I was using back then was from 2015 and was on its last legs for a trick like that.

Not a DAW user personally. Every musician utilizes sound sources in their own unique way and it seems that you've become excited about using a computer {hmmm...} to make some sounds along with your wonderful Modular Synthesis System. Explore and experience 😅❤
@Lightbath7 ай бұрын
I see now that I never really summarized why I’m excited about it. I think the core of it is that it’s a computer system that works without having to look at the screen. It’s controlled by the Eurorack sequencer and all the knobs, faders, and buttons. So the experience of playing still feels like modular, but I was able to build it to do things that I couldn’t otherwise do in a hardware modular, or at least one of that size.
