Part of the early-'90s explosion of Latin rap, Lighter Shade of Brown (LSOB) was formed in Riverside, CA, in 1990, when the teenage ODM (One Dope Mexican, born Robert Gutierrez) was introduced to DTTX (Don't Try to Xerox, born Bobby Ramirez). The duo began cutting demos and secured a record deal within the year; they debuted with 1990's Brown and Proud for Quality Records hip-hop subsidiary Pump. Though they didn't break out on the level of Cypress Hill, the group garnered some positive reviews and established themselves as one of the better Latin rap outfits around. The follow-up, Hip Hop Locos, was released in 1992, and helped LSOB land a major-label shot with Mercury, where they contributed to the soundtracks of the Latino-oriented films Mi Vida Loca and I Like It Like That. 1994's full-length Layin' in the Cut proved disappointing, however, and the disillusioned partners took a temporary break from the music business. They returned in 1997 on Oakland's much smaller Thump Records (in partnership with the Greenside label), issuing a self-titled album with guests including Rappin' 4-Tay and Tony! Toni! Toné!'s Dwayne Wiggins. Thump released a greatest-hits collection in 1999, and their fifth album, If You Could See Inside Me, followed, producing a minor hit single in "Sunny Day." In late 1999, Gutierrez became a radio DJ in the Los Angeles area.

This song came out in 1990 and it sound just as great 33 years later than it did 33 years ago. The west coast stations such as K Day, Wild 107, 106 KMEL played the hell out of this song. It was a very big song back then. I just found out Bobby passed away back in 2016. 2016 was the worst year for deaths I can remember. My mom passed away in 2016 as well. RIP Bobby, you were a very dope rapper and MC.

I grew up in the 80's listening to heavy metal and the hair bands... one day I heard this in the 90's and fell in love with it.. gave me a real appreciation for hip hop and the talent there is out there, just such a smooth cool song.

Oh how this definitely takes me back into time . My grandparents would be having a cook out BBQ at the back yard . All the brothers , cousins and uncles would be drinking ....all the other cousins and boys from the block and neighbourhood would come around and join too . My sisters and her friend and aunties would sit over in the women section . We'd all laugh and dance 60's , 70's , 80's & 90's . Lighter shade of brown was definitely one of the jamz . Then we'd pass the blunt around and my grandpa and uncle would always get the guitar . We'd sing all night then go back to playing the jams from the stereo . Next day We'd be hungover having left overs from the cookout and all go swimming later that day . Come back to playing videos on the VCR watching all the 90's 🎬 movies at the time . Ooohh good times
