I'm very surprised by the Arteza browns fading. Not because of Arteza, they're a budget brand with low quality and extortionate prices. Because browns just don't fade usually. They obviously used dyes instead of earth pigments.

When I was investigating which of the opera pinks to buy, W&N was recommended as the least problematic. I’m glad to see it fared well out of those you tested! Thanks for testing and discussing your findings. Really appreciated, Mina!

Thanks for your valuable test 👍 I want to know that what brand of colors and papers are you using for your etsy painting. As lightfastness matters a lot when you sell your paintings.

I don’t actually have any of my original paintings for sale on my Etsy so I’m not sure what you are referring to. But if I were to sell my originals I make sure I’m using artist grade and lightfast pigments for those paintings and archival paper

@@MinaDoesArtStuff Okay thanks 😊 Does there any varnish or anything else to prevent watercolor painting?? Such as pencil sketch have fixative and oil and acrylic have it's own varnish
@MinaDoesArtStuff
@MinaDoesArtStuff 2 жыл бұрын
@@artbymonaofficial30 I don’t believe so … I’ve not tried or heard of any varnishes for watercolours and I don’t think there are many watercolour artists that use them

17:12 One question: are these Winsor & Newton or White Nights? I ask these because you said that the orchid colors were White Nights but here you say these are Winsor & Newton. New subscriber here. Thanks for your videos 👍🏻👍🏻

Glad to see that Holbein's opera is not as fugitive as I have imagined. I use this pink a lot in botanical paintings.

Thank you for doing this, Mina, especially at a time when you were also moving your household as well as making art videos for us. You and Kim Crick could be a formidable duo - artists who can switch on their science brains to the benefit of us all.

Thank you so much … I’ve learned a lot from her about how to perform better quality lightfastness tests so I’m hoping my next round of testing will give even more informative results!

I was curious about the olive green by white nights. It is rated with 2 stars, but in your test appears intact

I haven’t had issues with it fading but equally it’s not my favourite olive green watercolour

I have to say that Prussian blue problems are more visible when not used so heavy in masstone, but some lighter washes. I just looked my 2 months light fastness tests, and my schmincke Prussian blue has almost disappeared from paper in the part it had lighter wash. Also masstone had extreme fading to be only 2 months and not direct sun light (east facing window/Spain). To my surprise indigo, that had genuine indigo mixed in (also schmincke) had hold up muuuuch better than Prussian - almost no visible change at all.

Yeah I'm planning to redo the tests for those pigments like prussian blue that I expected to see some fading in and doing a gradated wash for all my lightfastness swatches going forward.

Yes, I've had the same results with Schminke Prussian Blue. Both masstone and diluted.

Greetings from Gran Canaria! Thanks for this kind of videos. We can all say that Schmincke is one of the best lightfast watercolors, as well as Sennelier and Mijello MG! :D

Pg 8 actually darkens over time. I left my swatches for 6 mo and it didn't fade in anyway. It did darken a tad but nothing that makes me not want to use it.

There’s very little use for those since you only did full strength color. 17:13 not Winsor and Newton.

Whoops yes I meant to say white nights violet so good catch there. As for your other point I think you can still learn a lot from these tests I don’t think it’s fair to say that is of little use. Really don’t think there’s a need to be rude or mean about it. If you watched the video then you know I stated the limitations of this test and how I was going to do more tests in the future with gradated swatches so I’m already aware and have been learning about how to do it better going foreard

Great work! I've also started my own lightfastness testing. I've just had the first check after 8 weeks and have some surprising results. Hoping to put together a video shortly to discuss what I've done and the results. Just for contrast, I'm in Australia and the UV here is much stronger. My Prussian Blue did not hold up at all! The brands I've tested include; Jackson's, White Nights, Daniel Smith, M Graham, Kuretake, Roman Szmal and a few colours by Schminke & Art Spectrum.
