Having landed on the ground, Hot Rod began to examine the area. He saw nothing but near pitch black caverns of rounded metal, going in directions unknown to the young robot. Within one of these pockets of blackness, however, shone a pale blue ball of light. Upon seeing this, Hot Rod felt a sort of warmth come over him, a feeling of familiarity, and it hit him. "The Matrix!", he exclaimed, as he approached the relic with great care. As he approached, he noticed something else: a pair of blood red eyes piercing the dark above the Matrix's glow. "It will do you no good, Autobot", responded the red-eyed figure in a crackly voice. Emerging from the darkness, Hot Rod's fears became reality, as the voice was that of Galvatron himself. With the Matrix still held round his neck by a chain, the now traitorous herald of Unicron spoke again "It cannot be opened"! "Not by a Decepticon", the young bot responded, as he approached, now with more care than before. Knowing of the situation, Galvatron attempted to strike up a truce, saying, "Like it or not, we are allies now, against a common foe". However, upon saying this, he was overwhelmed with another burst of agonizing pain, worse than any before. He felt as if his very body was being slowly pulled apart piece by piece. "Destroy him Galvatron, NOW!", the furious voice of Unicron spoke, "or you yourself shall be obliterated!" Upon these words being stated, Galvatron's pain amplified itself one hundredfold: every single fiber of his body was in agonizing pain, burning up in some sort of telepathic hellfire over which he had no control. Galvatron, now fearing for his life, gave in to his savage nature again. "Of course...my master!", he cried out in agony. After this, the pain receded, and Galvatron, now seathing with rage, took aim at Hot Rod. "I guess the truce is off", the Autobot thought to himself, as he ran off and hid within the maze of steel. Meanwhile, Galvatron continued to boil in anger, firing blindly into the caverns surrounding him. "Puny Autobot!", he cried out into the dark, "You lack even Prime's courage!". Upon hearing this belittling of his late leader, Hot Rod knew what he had to do. He put aside his guilt over Prime's death, and knew that this would only end two ways: saving the lives of his friends, or the loss of his own.
