Lightning hopkins doing an awesome version of mojo hand

Thing about this show was: The band he is playing with isn't his real band. It was some students at a college he was playing at. Now Lightning changes when he feels like changing it up - and the guys playing with him didn't catch on to that. That's why he looks back at them and upset at times. He doesn't stick to the 4/4 blues changes everytime - he switches it up when he feels it.

Exactly. Mojo hand is (mostly) a 13 bar blues. I Can't say I've heard him do it as a straight 12 bar. He always puts in an extra bar of E before the first A. But sometimes he drags out the first A aswell making it a 14 bar blues.

i like him, haha he is cool and that suit is sharp as hell...lots of people say he couldnt hold up against the electric bluesmen of his day like BB, or T-Bone and Muddy but in reality he could and this hear proves it John lee Hooker said it himself..."Lightnin' is a true master"

0:16 that run in too strong, and that shake of the head... If I was that bassplayer, I would have been downright bloody heartbroken.
@Insight4207 жыл бұрын
I noticed that as well; you can tell Lightning wanted to stay on the I chord for another measure, while the bass player jumped to the IV chord. Lightning then hits that long burst of chords to try and re-establish the rhythm for the whole band.

If you listen really closely it sounds like he even says to the bass player "Ya can't do that" or maybe "Don't do that"

The bass player remained playing the root, when he SHOULD HAVE PLAYED THE 5TH....No wonder the guitarist looked back at him with a wtf? expression. Come on, the bass player SHOULD have FELT the chord change, I mean this is just a 3 chord blues....

the first thing I did this morning when I got out of bed was put on a Lightning record. I call that a good start to the day. did anyone else want to yell at that woman with the giant yawn in the midst of greatness?

Seems the bassist, wasn't the only one to cop Lightnin's "death stare". At 2:01, the girl in the back ground is yawning and doing poses & Lightnin' just gives her a death stare at 2:05.😆

this is interesting! I actually dont see myself play with any band for the same reason. They may shoot me for doing something different. I am looking for a drummer and a harmonica player at the moment. But I am happy to play alone though! I love the blues and nothing but the blues for the better tomorrow

Lightnin wasn't easy to follow since he was raw & didn't stick to the standard 12 bar Blues progression. He would change up when he felt like it. That approach worked alright when he played solo.. but didn't work well in a band setting..which makes it sound sloppy & out of sync at times.
