Actually if you think about it Twilight IS to blame for the whole desaster. Yes spike did get selfish, and misused Twilights title LATER, BUT the decisons that led to the Catastrophe, where ALL to help twilight sleep. Non of the selfish request had anything to do with that. So it is twilights fault for not assigning someone to take over her duties, or at least it's Cadances fault -.-

"Pomp and Circumstance". Interesting song choice. ... I like it! I'm glad you brought up one of the two parts that had annoyed me most about this episode. Since Cadence had asked Spike to make sure Twilight isn't disturbed, you would think that she would have also made sure other ponies would know to come to either her or the Royal Sisters to address their concerns while Twilight sleeps. ... The only other thing that had annoyed me more in this episode is when Fluffy Clouds wanted to talk to Twilight about somepony taking his seat, and then saying she's so wise when "she" told him to forgive his friend. I mean, seriously?! That's not wisdom, ponies; that's common sense! You are, after all, grown mares and stallions, right?! By the way, did you notice that griffin? It made a cameo appearance in "The Lost Treasure of Griffinstone". Looks like Gilda's friendship mission is going fairly well if a fellow griffin is attending...a PONY summit...with a PONY gem-statue as the centerpiece.

One thing about Spike and the Crystal Empire, it was put so much focus because they where among the ponies that Spike directly saved. Just as the mane six are, Spike isn't known as much outside of it.

I do agree with you Bliss, like everything you said. I just don't like of Spikes character development on this episode. I wouldn't say it's a bad episode, not my favorite, but I think the writers make him look bad. I'm just saying, but we still like Spike still. And you did make a good point of the princesses as well, except for Twilight. They should have help Spike in a situation and also tell the other ponies that Twilight is sleeping. But oh, well, cannot get what you want it. Hopefully Spike will get a much more better episode, since season 4. And hopefully doesn't happen it again.

4:42 This, right here, is the number one issue when it comes to why seemingly every writer on this show loses every bit of brain function anytime a Spike episode is written; the total lack of characterization. Everything we learn about Spike in episodes where he *isn't* the focus tells us that Spike is humble, honest, compassionate, dedicated to those he cares for (especially Twilight) and to his work, and is good at what he does. The issue is that no one, for some ridiculous reason, seems capable of actually making an episode that focuses on what he actually is like, and instead creates some ridiculously cliched plot where Spike ends up being the issue. And the way they do that is by destroying his characterization and twisting his character however much they need to in order to force the plot to happen. Honestly, I feel rather bad for the poor guy. I see people joke about him all the time based on his actions from some of his worst episodes, but when you think about it he's basically a mistreated puppet. Here you have a character with so much potential and such a seemingly good personality based on what we see in the background, but the moment he's made the focus of an episode he's practically turned into a new character just to let the story happen.

Five years too late, but I love him too and he's one of the reasons why I say the show's writing kept improving with the change in the writers. Because Spike's episodes became much less inconsistent and they showed that the new writers understood him much better than most of the old ones. Including one Josh Haber, who seems to love Spike pretty much since when he did a two parter the dragon always has some kind of role in it even before he became story editor for the series.

In Twilight's speech early in the episode, she stated that the planning led to "many sleepless nights." Anypony with half a brain should have been able to put two and two together without needing the princesses to think for them. I couldn't bring myself to watch this episode, the writers never seem to do Spike justice in episodes were he's the main focus. The few exception to this would "Inspiration Manifestation," "Dragon Quest," and a few parts of "Equestria Games." (please may he never sing again) It's more when he's not the main focus that he shines, like during Equestria Girls he became a voice of reason for Twilight. Spike gets a small amount of love from the fandom, much like how in most tales dragons are deemed ferocious monsters. The only love most dragons get is the love to be hated.

I honestly think it should have been the purple pony thing to make the decisions. That would have made this episode soooooo entertaining and also, due to sleep deprivation, it would have had a good reason for saying things that made no sense and acting out of character.

I guess the writers have issues with Spike because he is a "baby" dragon. As a result Spike is displayed as a kid who has to relearn previous lessons. It is similar to the Cutie Mark Crusaders only technically he's younger. There are a number of chances to show Spike's growth, yet he is always shown as being a younger inexperienced brother type. Thus leading him to have things like nice guy syndrome and acting out of character. There is also a lack of guidance. Yes he is a dragon and has pony caretakers but he still needs to learn about himself. Without learning about his own cultural identity he could be feeling somewhat lost or less developed. There was the dragon migration but that was just one group of dragons a sample size that was far too small for any true cultural development. Just as Silver Quill said before "The writers don't know what do do with him," Spike probably gets less development because the focus is on the mane six and even they can be out of character. Since Spike has less chances to show himself this makes it even worst. He just needs a chance to grow or a few episode that shows his stronger features to help out weight the previous down falls.

If there's one issue I have with the fandom, it's how they think Spike isn't written well. But the fact is, the writers write him VERY well. It's just that the fandom will often forget that Spike IS just a kid and will end up expecting too much out of him. I think a lot of people forget that he IS technically still a kid. He gets a lot of flak for not handling things in a mature manner. The same thing happens with the crusaders. You have to bear in mind that kids don't handle problems the same way adults do and many are very prone to getting carried away when they feel empowered. He did learn his lesson in the end so all's well that ends well I guess.

Here's what I think we could to do to fix this. Have Spike make 3 copies of twilights plans. Have celestia, Luna, and Cadence tackle the delicates and their problems. All the while? Straglers come to talk to spike and ask why twilight isn't present. if they have a friendship problem? He can help resolve it. THAT can cause the problems due to a genuinely honest misunderstanding that gets resolved. That way? Twilight gets her rest, spike gets to be helpful, and the three remaining get to show thier best too

The My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic series is a very popular TV show made by Lauren Faust who was into the first generation of My Little Pony since her childhood back in the 1980s. It is mainly targeted for young, little girls. However, time went on, the G4 show became more popular when adults began watching it, too, as well. The males were called "Bronies" while the females were known as "Pegasisters." However, the other reason why grown-ups began watching it in the first place, was mostly because the show included adult-jokes such as alchohol and anything alike. But, as I've been watching the first seasons of the show for a while, there's one thing I discovered which seemed pretty far different than any of that, something called; the "Spike-fandom." A group of people which seemed to be more focused on Spike, himself, rather than the Mane Six, the main cast of the show. And now, I'm about to tell you the whole origin of how people so-called "Spike-fans" started the whole Spike Abuse crisis. At first, since the first generation, I figured that having Spike in My Little Pony just makes zero sense. Having a small, goofy baby-dragon walking around and interfering magical horses' activities and such? Really, what's the whole point of that? Dragons doesn't fit along with girly, magical horses. They are typically known as big and scary predators, like, in fairy-tales, they have a common role of destruction or anything alike. Ponies are mammals, dragons aren't. Any other girly mammal species like birds, dogs, cats, and bunnies for example, are fitting species with ponies together. Perhaps, having a goofy and silly baby-dragon, like Spike, in the cartoon, at least, just to provide comic relief? Anyway, let's start off with the episode, "Equestria Games," which was more focused on Spike, himself, rather than the games despite the name of the episode. That's funny, right? The episode is named "Equestria Games," but was all about Spike getting all credit for "saving the Crystal Empire" in the King Sombra scenario after all hard work Twilight and the rest of the Mane Six did alone, themselves. In the "Crystal Empire" epsiode, Twilight got a test from Celestia about protecting the Crystal Empire with the rest of the Mane Six with her. Twilight figured out where the heart was, found the hidden passage to it, made her way up to the top in lights speed with her up-side-down magic, and Twilight passing the burden over to Spike was her idea, and Spike only ran a small distance over to a ledge and then fell. Shining Armor saves him AND the heart, then Cadance flew over there, caught them, and brought the heart to where it needed to go. Spike is NOTHING compared to that and doesn't deserve to be the "hero" of the Crystal Empire. After that, Spike get's to be the one who befriends Thorax, whic also is a part of the whole thing about attempting to end Spike Abuse. Now, let's head over to the episode, "Gauntlet of Fire," which starts off with Rarity and Spike, together, mining for gems. Then, Spike's scales suddenly began to glow and was told back in Canterlot that he was being called by the "Dragon Lord" which we haven't seen or heard about in previous episodes or seasons. Spike travels over there, along with Twilight and Rarity, and finds out that the Dragon Lord was going to retire. So, he suggests to all dragons throughout the Dragon Lands about competing in a race over to a mountain to get the sceptre and become the new Dragon Lord. And, that's where this episode's derailment began. As the dragons started discussing about their planned activities once one of them became the new Dragon Lord, one of Garble's friends wanted to invade Equestria just to steal beds to sleep on instead of rocks. Then, Garble just directly spits out about being crossed by ponies in the past, and he never tells tell us WHY. Yeah, weird, right? What did the ponies ever do to him? It's a very dumb reason for Garble to wreak havoc someplace and then have Spike saving the day just because one of them once pushed Garble so he fell into a mud puddle and laughed at him, isn't it? And, wouldn't it have been wiser of the Dragon Lord to not just let any other dragon take over the throne without having a way of knowing that they'd have evil intentions? "Here, take my throne and do whatever the fuck you like! I don't give a shit!" I guess having new characters appearing so suddenly in an epsiode is no such big deal. But, something, like Garble who wants revenge on the ponies for a reason no one fully explains? At the end of the episode, neither Twilight or Rarity were able to fend off some teenage dragons despite back when Twilight and the rest of the Mane Six already fought off other foes like the Changelings in "Canterlot Wedding" or "Twilight's Kingdom" where Twilight, alone, confronts Tirek who had returned after harnessing Equestria's inhabitants' energy. I know that was why Twilight got the other princesses' magic in order to defeat him. But, that's the question; couldn't they have done the same against Garble? Of course, it wouldn't have been needed since dragons are already weak and harmless because they cannot use any magic or such abilities, whatsoever. So, it's pretty much obvious that this whole episode and other episodes featuring Spike doing something good was based off from Spike-fans' own fanfictions, right? Just coming up with anything, just ANYTHING, like having Twilight and Spike's girlfriend helping him become the Dragon Lord to stop some non-powerful teenage dragons from attacking a land without a complete unexplained reason. This whole Spike-fandom is all about people pretending to BE Spike in various situations, which are more known as "Spike-wannabes," and be like; "Oh, that's ME saving the Crystal Empire! YAY!" But Spike Abuse was a serious problem, which made them be like; "Oh no! That's ME getting hit by that door!" That's the whole crux of the entire issue, isn't it? Spike-fans whining over Spike's poor treatments in a little girl's cartoon show and how he never got the chance of being in the spotlight, just for once in his whole life.
