Lights flickering-as documentation of Pause

Pause is a light installation of fluorescent lights that flicker randomly and endlessly. The first version of this work was presented in 2010, and it is the starting point of the work for an exhibition "Undertones" at Marres in Maastricht NL.
Together with Mei-yi Lee(Sonolab), I have re-enacted the light installation using recorded sound instead of actual tube lights. I equested the audience to be patient. Listen to the sound for a while and imagine that there are fluorescent lights on the empty ceiling and that they are all flickering as if they are dying.

Clink sounds when the fluorescent lamp turns on. A fluorescent light fixture that has a bad ballast will cause different types of issues which troubleshooting will indicate the ballast needs to be replaced. Test the light fixture by replacing the fluorescent light tubes to be sure the light bulbs/tubes are not the cause of the issue.

so, how did you do this? did you have a bunch of EOL tubes trying to preheat, or did you put in the wrong starter, or did you just play the short clip over several times? is that sound the actual starters? sounds lovely.

I pranked my friend by replacing the whole preheat lights to EOL tube at his house, then he came to me and asked me "what did u do to my lights* I said that I pranked him and switched all the functional bulbs to EOL, and yes its almost like this

Thanks for the reply! I tried this by replacing the 80-100 watt starter in one of my lamps with a 4-65 watt starter, and it still started normally and didn't flicker endlessly like in the above video. Do you know why this is?

Amazing that you are trying to do that! I guess the difference between what the starter is made for and the tube light is still too close. The light tubes in the video was 160cm and the starter was for the shortest tube. I remember that the starter did work with 160cm tube light but not with 120cm.
