I bought a mid century lamp today that has one of the Lights of America says Pre Heat on it. Turned it on lights up halfway so I put an LED in. These are definitely interesting things enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting this.

Me, too. My grandparents used to have those when they lived in Platteville, Wisconsin.

I have quite a few of these. Got them off eBay for about 20-30 dollars a pop. Love them though. Worth every penny.

You can also convert them to preheat by just putting a 30 watt rated bottle starter across the capacitor

I’ve done it with my 27w fml desk lamp

I ordered a ballast like this on ebay for like? 7 bucks. I got this odd ceiling fan lamp that these fit perfectly into. Mines a bit smaller being only 6 inches but the fan lamp could prolly fit one of these fine. I couldnt find any in this size that were new. My guess is they stopped making them. One I got was made in South Korea and the bulbs which were cheaper to buy in bulk (9 bucks plus 10 dollars shipping vs buying 3 for 12 dollars plus 10 dollars shipping) were made in Japan and were GE brand. These are a good light IMO shoulda been more widespread and they dont hurt your eyes like modern LED does which is WHY I got them. I tried a bright LED and it hurt me too much with the glare, which was why I got one of these. I value my eyes too much. Sure I coulda used a normal CFL but these last longer and look better.

Thanks that’s what I was looking for was the advantage is less glare from the LED. I bought a cool MCM ceramic lamp had one of these LOA circular tubes in it. Unfortunately it only lights up about half way….😩

I'd like to have different circline adapters with different effects when turning the lights on. Can you tell which one does what and with what wattage?

This was also available as a kit, (adapter, tube, bracket and diffuser), they sold for around $25-30 at Home Depot in 1996. I installed one of those kits back then as a cheap retrofit for a failing 32w fixture, and just swapped it out for a ceramic keyless and one of those kits.

What’s the advantage over an LED? May sound like a dumb question but why bother?

Yep, Lights of America name brand, I had 2 or 3 of these in the past. I mentioned in another video of yours saying this until I found this video, thank you. I'd moved on to a CFL 60-watt daylight but will switch to an LED version, likely a classic bulb w/ no heat sink solid base as was used in other early bulbs. I already bought many of these but as a "surplus" for myself, lol. I look forward to when my incandescents or CFLs burn out. Have fun with your collection and I look forward to more of your videos.
