Lights, Shelves, Action! | Finishing the Seed Room

With the ceiling lights wired and the outlets in place, we were ready to set up shelves and grow lights in anticipation of the upcoming spring season when we will start thousands of seeds for our 2025 summer garden. The seed room turned out more beautiful than we could have imagined and after starting seeds in our cabins for 5 years, we are grateful to finally have a dedicated space where the dirt is welcomed.

I have serious seed room envy. It's beautiful. Who else has a sudden need for coffee when you start watching? I may drink 3 cups in a single episode. Have you considered putting your floor plants on a pallet with casters? It would get them up off the floor a bit, so they don't dry out so fast and you could roll them around if you need to rearrange things in the seed room. Love your channel!!!!

I am an experienced grower myself & I have my own set up like you guys. One tip I can offer is 100% be careful of the full spectrum lights with your seedlings or all of your propagation. They can destroy them. It will turn your 30 day crops into seed within days. Fine for seed but great distance or a draw. Endive is one of the best early cold weather crops to grow. It can take -5 Celsius & grow like a champ when it warms up a tad. Double fleece if colder

@@SimpleLivingAlaska - oh, it's so easy! I keep two 5 gallon buckets with worms and veg scraps and - most importantly - lots of shredded paper and shredded cardboard. These last two make a world of difference. I keep a bandana elastic-banded over the top and no smells. It couldn't be easier. There are youtube videos which are VERY complicated - for the purpose of clicks. Keeping worms is really really really simple. It does not need to be complicated.

Back in the early 70s I was in middle school. Me and another girl took a Shop class instead of Home Economics. We were pioneers! I was using a drill bit router on a piece of wood, bending forward, and my long hair which I did not have tied back, caught in the drill bit! Ouch! Luckily I didn't yank out a chunk of my hair but it hurt terribly. I was so embarrassed. Everytime I see Arielle not having her hair pulled back while using power tools I have flashbacks of being in shop class. 😂

Nice job on the room. I have had good success on micro greens and fodder. What's worked for me: 1. Theoretically, you can use any soil if you want but if you do, sterilize it. However soil itself is not necessary. You only need a sterile medium the roots can grab onto and give some vertical space above your watering point. Sometimes, like with wheat, a hole tray above the bottom tray may be enough and all you need if you have enough seeds in there for them to grab onto each other. Lots of things will work better than soil like coco coir, straw mats, sand, lava rocks, etc. steam sterilized toilet paper works. The seeds already have the nutrients necessary to get to the microgreen stage without anything else and just need something to grab on to. However, there is no real "wash" to a micro green harvest so whatever rooting medium you use, make sure it's something you would be ok with accidentally eating some that is left on a stem you accidentally pulled instead of cut. That's also why it's got to be sterile and I am not a fan of actual soil for this, especially potting mixes that could have any solid animal fertilizers in them. I am more a fan of just using coco coir if you are doing less than 4 trays a week. 2. In order to not to oversaturate, I only water using a mist bottle sprayed on top twice a day at first. That's more than enough when keeping it covered and dark using another 10x20 tray, which also helps by simulating soil darkness and soil pressure. 3. On second week to the third week, even though they've sprouted, unless they needed light to germinate it's better to keep another tray on top and keep misting it with a spray bottle twice a day- the pressure of the tray gives the sprouts something to push on for root development while also thickens the stems making them only leggy enough to get to the top of the tray and that makes it easier to harvest later, instead of leafing out right over the roots. 4. Once they've lifted the tray high enough you start seeing them green on the edges from light leakage then it's time to go to lights and leaf out. The pressure from before usually helps quicken germ time, so this is usually the 11 to 18 day mark for me. Each week I put my new trays on my week old trays to add the weight. I've regularly had a tray growth lift up the 4 full trays that were above it without problems. Think as if you were planting carrots with a board on top, same concept. When planting that many together they are not weak or easy to crush. This method also saves light space as only the final leafing stages need the light. For more than half your grow you only need warmth of a heated room, a heat mat, or placement above your lights to reuse their heat. They'd be fine in your generator room or cabin at that stage up through going to the lights. Also, before putting to lights, if the water is not enough or the veg too thick I move to a cup of water a day in the bottom tray under the hole tray. This also gives the roots a humidity target to grow to. 5. Once they are under lights and no longer covered and now with fan ventilation, I do 2 to 4 cups water per day (1 2cup measuring cup worth morning and night, holding back if not just barely wet from the last water). 6. Between day 21 and 35 after they've sprouted their 1st 2 true leaves they're ready to harvest. I usually harvest with a very sharp knife but very sharp scissors can work. 7. If that seed type seems to weaken early or I want the fastest grow I can get, I might use a fertilizer on day 21, or anytime otherwise if kept past 1 month of grow. I use a mix using a cap of 2-0-2 oceanwater per gallon of water, using that liquid mix in the measuring cup instead of just water. 8. If I decide to seed it out, maybe I'll repot into soil before the second month, but have gone 4 months like that without soil. I try not to do that too long for fear of attracting gnats. Better to keep indoor planting materials on a cycle of getting sterilized.

I'm not an electrician, but I thought Romex in conduit was not to code. Looking great though! Also, if your feeling lucky, to can make a larger offsets going into the box making it centered between the windows and still using the 1/2" hole. One more thing, add a lower shelf under your bench. You're gonna need it. You already have half the 2x4's there.

Friends, the seed room is spectacular! You made a very wise decision with doing a solid insulated roof. The time periods that you really wanted that extra sun, the sun is so low on the horizon that it would not have come through the roof anyway. ❤
