This is by far my favorite camping content on all of YT. I love your no nonsense approach and sense of humor man. I made the same Ronnie Coleman reference on trail with my hiking group a couple weeks ago and no one got it…

I moved across the country 4 years ago and my old gear was not worth the dollar/pound moving cost. I bought new gear and came up with a similar result to you. At the current age of 54 I appreciate the weight difference. Depending on the trip I still bring some "luxury" items (bourbon). Keep up the good work. I enjoy your style.

one of the main "sayings" of UL hiking, is "dont pack your fears" :) regarding water - its a big part of experience to analyse safe water sources, time of year, type of water source, lots of hikers doing this use Farout map data with user input where they can see on resent comments if the sources are reliable - so lots of ways to do that - hard carrying water for an entire 1 week plus trip :D - its a good take on someone not experienced in UL hiking looking at it from outside, having done it for around 20 years - we all tend to get "caught up" in ways we do things and can become enclosed in it.... the 10lb BW - while some consider it the "goal standard" its mostly a newer thing - the more philosophical "lightest that does the job" is a bit more interesting and universal... for me, summer time and shorter trips, its more like 5-6lb - full comfort 3 season trips, maybe 8-10lb and winter, well depends where, but higher of course. UL gear can definitely be costly, but mainly because most of it is high end - compared to "normal" high end gear, cost is around the same or lower

I feel ya on bringing more water. I take my 8yr old son out with me on hikes and just to be safe I’ll take at least 5L . He also has to take his own 2L but just to be safe and take extra stuff for him. Tons of fun and it gets me more jacked lol

With a name like hugeguy, you BETTER be jacked haha

I strike a balance with weight. I have some lighter gear where it matters, but always pack more water than I need as it's come in handy multiple times when sources were dried out or otherwise not available.

Mystery Ranch for the ultralight set-up? I LIKE IT. I just purchased the bridger 45 for my next trip and its easily the most comfortable bag I've ever tried on! If its in your budget just buy Mystery Ranch!

So u like the double strap thing? Ive got coule*40 and i like the pack part of the bridger but i dont know anyone thats used it yet
@michaelpuryear46822 ай бұрын
@@Saml3227 ohhh yeah. Its ridiculously comfortable! And my pack is usually 30-40 lbs.

Wow. My Outdoor Vitals Shadowlight 60 is under 2 pounds - WITH the internal frame, and it carries quite well - I’ve had up to 50 pounds in it (significantly over the recommended load, but it was a 10-day food carry, and the pack did fine…)
@BackpackingTV2 ай бұрын
I guess those pounds really matter if a sub-10 base weight is what you are shooting for.
@justjonoutdoors2 ай бұрын
@@BackpackingTV My baseweight has been flirting with, but never quite under 20 pounds… That said, it sure beats the military 50-60 pound packs I was carrying back in the ‘70’s & ‘80’s..!

It’s kinda funny.. I am really trying to dial down my pack… Seems like I’m carrying the same as others when I watch their gear videos but when I weigh my pack at the trailhead I’m always over 40 lbs. Just did a 3 day in cooler weather here in Michigan… there’s a section with no water so I was cameling up. I started with 2.5 liters of water and was at 42 lbs to start. Ideally I would like to start the hike at 32 lbs. I am the one that carries the safety equipment.. the garmin/ bear spray/ and I have the bear vault. I guess this is where every ounce counts 🫣 The next step is to get the scale out and list things out and see where I’m truly getting the weight from… and what I can do without.

I don't do anything outdoors, strictly recreationally. That is, whatever I do has a practical core; skills and gear that I can 'work' with. My backpacking gear is a little on the heavy side because I try to use the most common items I can. The problem with 'ultralight' gear isnt just the expense, but availability. If I have to replace a piece of ultralight gear, I typically have to get online and shop and then wait days to even weeks for it. I prefer things I can find in a dollar store or someone's kitchen. That said, theres just no substitute for my AquaQuest Safari 🥰

After moving to canada i left all my gear in ireland my usual baseweight was around 30lbs with old gear there, over the last couple of years i rebuilt my entire gear collection going a mix of ultralight and comforts and my baseweight now sits at 15.6lbs but i include my 2.1lbs of camera gear in there so without that its 13.1lbs im definitely happier with the lower weight nowadays over the much heavier stuff i carried for years 😂

Ireland to Canada is quite the hop

ultralight depends on the season too
@davidcooper83902 ай бұрын
It all depends on the distance. Shorter distances=heavier more comfort items

Ok. So the thing I'm interested in with these two setups is this: Which one is more comfortable at camp? Obviously the lightweight gear is going to be easier to hike with, but when you're at camp what is the comfort cost?
@BackpackingTV2 ай бұрын
I think cozier stuff is going to be heavier in most cases. I like to keep cozy out there! Even a book can add considerable weight when you are counting ounces. Bring whatever you can handle if it's worth it is my advice!

Wait... you used a Nalgene bottle on the ultralight side? 🤔 SmartWater bottles. Lighter, plenty durable, and any number of cheap filters (Sawyer Squeeze, HydroBlu Versa Flow, Platypus Quickdraw) just screw onto the 28 mm end.

It's my personal preference, but I'll always carry a hard bottle. At least one, anyway

There is nothing wrong with that! I used to sit around 50 back in the day because I was the designated "donkey" and had to carry all the group's pots and pans ha
