Howdy Mike! Thank you for checking out the video, I ended up making quite a mess in the living room making this, but it was so awesome to land within 3 ounces of my goal. Thanks as well for the sub, it means a lot, helps a lot, its been a great community to interact with so far and Ill keep on rolling and improving! Cheers

Great video. I just picked up the Kakwa 55. Let me know when you go on another backpacking trip. I just moved down here to SoCal and it’s hard to find hiking buddies. Doing a San Gorgonio summit in a week and a half.

Howdy chad, congrats on the Kakwa! Did you pick up the 2024? Ive been curious as to what areas of the pack have reinforced stitching / attachment points. Absolutely will let you know, Im actually looking to do some snow hiking / backpacking this winter so Im in early research stages. Currently looking at some Palm Springs backpacking via the Tram. Ill reach out as I solidify some plans. Have fun on the summit this month, be safe out there !

YT just popped this video into my feed. Amazing loadout for just getting into backpacking! Well done. To answer your question about what to include in base weight, you’re totally right about everyone having their own flavor. At the end of the day, the purpose is to help get to a comfortable pack weight, so whatever you want to include is cool. For comparison purposes, the standard convention would be to include the empty bottles, like you did, empty fuel canister (the small can is 3.5oz), but not include any clothes you are always wearing while hiking. Just a heads-up: I believe that bear spray is not permitted in Sequoia and Kings-Canyon. The general rule of thumb is to carry bear spray in grizzly country, but not really necessary with black bears. Hike on!

Howdy John! Really awesome comment, thanks for checking out the vid I’m glad you enjoyed. Just a couple weeks ago I got back from the backpacking trip where I used all this gear, so I’ll be doing a roundup video on that soon, learned a lot of stuff. And thank you for the notes on the more conventional way to get a base weight. After a solid year of researching and watching most of the leading backpacking and gear channels, more often than not I was sorta confused on how they were achieving such impressive ultralight base weights. It usually appeared to me that some things shouldn’t have been included, and some things were missing. In the end, My goal was to stay light and comfortable both on trail and at camp, even if that means bringing a chair. About two weeks before the Sequoia trip, I accidentally discovered you are not allowed to posses bear spray in the park, you are correct. My initial reaction was “ well good, that’s 10 ounces off the weight “ but as I researched a little more after I returned home, I’m developing some contradicting opinions on this rule the park has. I’m still working through my thoughts on this and I plan on making a video about it at some point. At least for now, my opinion is while there hasn’t been an American Black Bear attack leading to a fatality in the California parks, our climate may soon force more predatory and desperate behavior from the bears and the statistics will change. I feel like you should be able to protect yourself. There was two days in a row of bears in our neighbors camp, they just want the easy food but desperation may soon tip. Anyways that’s my rant / thoughts on that for now. Thank you so much for checking the video out Cheers

Hike your own hike... Not bad man, enjoy your trip. Can't wait to see how it goes. The heat keeps me from going out on trips, especially because I work construction busting my hump in the heat kills.

Thank you for putting that vibe out there ! Its really easy to get rolled up in ultralight goals, healthy competition. Ultimately I discovered, as long as you are safe and enjoying yourself, set your own personal weight goal and just do your own thing! For me, comfort factors in so a 20 pound base weight will do just fine, plus I can use the exercise.... Be safe in the heat out there, I had my years of new construction fire sprinkler installations in the heat so I get where you are coming from. Appreciate the support and comment, greatly. Lets keep on rolling! Cheers

Oh cool! I'm super interested in those Teva slip ons.
@zacmagers

The Teva slip ons saved my bacon day two of the Ladgepole camping last week! Im typically in sandals when I can be but the temperatures were pretty chilly in the morning. So far what I have to report on these : Keeps your piggies warm for sure but not TOO warm A little hard to get on, so it feels like you may need to size up, but once they slide on they fit with just enough extra room. I only wore these for a few hours in the morning and at night for one day in a pretty dust free / pine needle covered campsite and these got tremendously dirty. Dirt is just part of the game when camping / backpacking but Im curious why they put white sidewalls on the soles of a camping slipper... Overall would recommend !
